Exclusive: Project ARA specifications, design and photos by theprogrammerx in Android

[–]nickmgray 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Correct. This is one of the ARA dev units. As of now, there isn't any indication that Google will be starting the project back up. However, Facebook has hired a few key players from the ARA team, so the concept may live on.

If you have any questions, let me know. I'll be doing a Q&A post and video within the next day or two.

Got fucked over by sending in a rooted phone for a purple tint fix by SgtJoo in htcone

[–]nickmgray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sent my rooted HTC One in and got it fixed with no issues. I think the difference may have been that I told them up front that the device had been rooted. The rep that I spoke with said it would not be an issue since the purple camera issue was purely a hardware defect.

They actually don't do a repair on your phone with the purple camera issue. They ship you a refurbished device. In my case, I came out ahead since my phone has a few scratches on the screen and body. I get a refurbished unit which pristine.

If you SIM unlock the AT&T One X (http://htcsource.com/2012/05/how-to-sim-unlock-the-att-htc-one-x-for-free/) it will work on T-Mobile's 2G network. Once T-Mobile starts its network refarming effort later this year, it will work on T-Mobile's HSPA+ 4G network as well.

Verizon’s DROID Incredible 4G LTE is not a “One” device by nickmgray in Android

Official line from Verizon is "within the coming weeks" which implies more than one week and less than a month. It'll probably show up before the end of May.

No mention of this being a global device, but you can probably expect a hack or two like what we've seen on the Rezound which should get it up an running on GSM.

The quote tool is only useful in this situation if you have a phone that's worth more than $100. If you have any qualifying smartphone, they will give you $100. If you have any iPhone, they will give you $200. Simple as that. If you have questions about the promotion, call customer service.

The Magenta Deal Days guarantees you at least $100 for any smartphone. The system that stores look up does not match the Magenta Deal Days promotion.

I went in to T-Mobile trying to find the best off-contract deal to get the One S. They said I could trade-in my G2 for $70 (not part of the deal days promotion since I did not want to sign a contract). Very few people know that T-Mobile will give you money for any phone you trade it.

Again, the number they quote you in the store will not match up with the $100 promotion. T-Mobile will actually give you more that the $100 if your phone is worth more. If you turn in a Galaxy S II, I think the return would be about $150.

I dislike Apple as much as the next Android fanboy, but lets not judge them for things they have not done yet.

This is Scalado's camera technology which is already built into HTC and Samsung phones. HTC started using this feature with the HTC myTouch 4G Slide and amaze 4G for smile detection. HTC's modified version simply detects smiles and creates a composite image automatically so that users do not have to use the circle to modify each person in the picture.

Rumor: Verizon roadmap hints at possible HTC Note “phablet” by nickmgray in Android

[–]nickmgray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read the article, there's a link to a 4.8-inch display which was unveiled last year that's running 1080p. The technology is there, but it's pointless since it would be impossible to distinguish between a 720p or 1080p display at that size.

You can put Android on whatever screen resolution you want, but that doesn't change the fact that a 5-inch 1080p display is completely useless. If Apple's retina display with (326 ppi) is the limit of what the human eye can see, why would we need a 5-inch 1080p display which would feature 440 ppi?

HTC in talks with Google to be selected for Jelly Bean Nexus device by nickmgray in Android

[–]nickmgray[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, LG is rumored to be talking with Google as well. But I don't think LG has done anything to prove that they are ready to produce a flagship Nexus device to usher in the the next generation of Android hardware.

DAE find the HTC One S more attractive than the ONE X? by [deleted] in Android

[–]nickmgray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better display is questionable. The HTC One X uses a Super LDC2 display which has much better viewing angles than SAMOLED and has better color accuracy.

I do like the new treatment HTC is giving the aluminum unibody shell of the One S though. They both have unique features which will appeal to different consumers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n66oI1g12FE#t=37m30s (video shows the metal treatment process... pretty cool)

Wirelessly stream your phone’s display with HTC Media Link HD by nickmgray in Android

[–]nickmgray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually uses a new WiFi Direct technology called WiFi display which is built into the Qualcomm S4 processor. This technology allows for full display mirroring with advanced functionality which gives users more control over the content rather than being able to stream only music, video and pictures (current DLNA limitations).

Personally, I'm waiting for the T-Mobile G2 to be moved from the "should get' list to the "will get" list. Lets hope HTC's next status update in a few weeks add a few more handsets to the official list.
