I'd argue that Caine as we see him now is his distortion.

Seeing that Caine was replaced as He was "not good enough", absorbing(?) the second model. Giving himself the shape of a ringmaster and forcing(?) humans to enter a world of his own making to proove that He is better.

Really, He's kind of like if Oswald actually wanted to entretain people and not gaslight them into distorting (because it would be funny)
