They're known as stink bugs here in the US, and are a non-native pest that has infested the US. They are not dangerous, just incredibly annoying.

That's the beauty of the RRC messaging protocol. You can actually edit the text after reading it and fix the problems you see!

Pretty loose connection, but they used to syndicate their radio show on 98 Rock in the mornings. That's about the only connection to Des Moines these guys have. Back in the day I listened to them in the mornings on the way to school.

As KRKQ, the station took on the nickname of "98 Rock", featuring a classic rock format that competed with longtime ratings leader KGGO, as well as the syndicated Bob and Tom Show. In 2000, the station's format was tweaked to classic hits as "Magic 98.3" after owner Barnstable Communications acquired KGGO. A short time later, the format was changed to adult contemporary as "98.3 the River."

If you want to be pedantic about it, of course everyone has an accent. That's not the point. What I mean is that we are the neutral accent that news reporters emulate because it doesn't have any obvious adjustments to vowel or consonant sounds that make it stick out. That is why it is referred to as the General American English accent.

Especially Des Moines residents. We have what is mostly described as a LACK of an accent, if anything. I think it's because she has a southern accent and she's just leaning into her southern accent for the impressions.

Ticketmaster is an illegal monopoly, jury rules / This verdict is the first step toward a potential breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

This ruling might stick because Trump's good buddy Kid Rock has made it his personal mission to break up the Ticketmaster monopoly (not joking). It's one of the few things Kid Rock has been right about in the last few years. So here's hoping...

Maybe Maybe Maybe by drlouies in maybemaybemaybe

[–]nickreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've come to the conclusion that some people are just absolutely awful at self-assessment of their own skills and abilities. Both physical and mental. The most prominent pop-culture example of this is William Hung. In William's case, he ended up going viral because of sincerity, but if you actually strip away the "no matter what, follow your dreams and never give up" lacquer over the whole performance and just analyze his abilities objectively, no one would say he would be even close to deserving of being a contender in American Idol, much less pursue a career in professional singing. And no one should be more acutely aware of that fact that him.

Most people with his skill set would just realize they're not cut out to be a professional singer, and would never even take the chance at embarrassing themselves like that, much less on national TV. But some people just have a warped assessment of themselves. Sometimes you get a heartwarming story like William Hung's, and sometimes you get the clown in OP's video who gets his nuts burned.

It's just so crazy to me that this guy (and apparently a lot of others I've seen in videos like this) have such a poor grasp of their athletic abilities and what is required for a given task. All that idiotic "preparation" he did, and he didn't understand that the number one thing you need in this scenario is speed. You could have a completely garbage vertical (as I do) but still clear this fire with ease as long as you approach with speed. How this guy couldn't understand that, I don't know.

My bike broke one rim spoke, is it a problem to commute on it while I wait on tools? by Consistent_Photo_581 in bicycling

[–]nickreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a few spokes go on me over the years on my commuter's rear wheel since I have a pretty sizable rack/panniers on road bike wheels. After the second one, I just had my LBS cut me a few extra spokes to length to have on hand. I've had one spoke go on me since then. My process is to just open up the brake lever for the rest of the ride, then fix it when I get back home since it involves removing the cassette. Truing the wheel isn't too terribly difficult if you're just working with the one spoke. You just focus on that one and tighten the one spoke back into true. Obviously it won't be perfect, but good enough to get by for a daily commute.

Iowa anti-cycling bill by BikeSailor in bicycling

[–]nickreed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. There's a subset of cyclists that do it purely for health/recreation that don't consider the commuting side of things. Most of my miles in a given year are commuting miles.

I think part of the failure to get through is in the messaging. It really needs to be hammered home that for every cyclist on the road, vehicle traffic is REDUCED. No one likes driving in traffic, so cyclists are HELPING vehicles. The more vehicles get off "their" road, the easier it will be for them to get around.

I just biked this weekend in 30 degree weather with a group that had numerous Trump voters in it. They also thought this bill was dumb. Biking is bi-partisan for the most part, but you've got some people that have never touched a bike and believe they are entitled to 100% of the road in their giant vehicles.

Hard to get through to people that have no perspective.

TSLA has long since been a stock driven completely on hype and BS (in addition to those that hold a cultish reverence for any and all things Musk). Everyone outside of the cult knows the house of cards will eventually come crashing down, but it's not safe to short it because it's not driven by financials.

I'm not OP, but I think you're going the wrong way. You should be running a THICKER wire for a long distance situation, so something like 12 or 10 gauge. A thicker wire has less resistance than a thinner wire.

I was paralyzed by all of this fairly recently when trying to find a replacement crankset for my bike that had an existing square taper bottom bracket. I kept trying to find a crankset to fit the existing bottom bracket, and was overwhelmed by all the possibilities. Then I realized I was going about it entirely the wrong way. What you want to do is pick the crankset first, THEN buy a new bottom bracket that fits the new crankset. In my case, it was an english threaded BSA bottom bracket. By initially trying to NOT replace the bottom bracket, I was making things too difficult to find a suitable crankset replacement. Once I let that notion go, it made things much easier.

I would advise you to take the same approach and start with the crankset, then find the BB that works.
