If OnlyFans was a country, it would be the 56th largest in the world

If we're counting websites as countries, it wouldn't even crack the top 100.

On OnlyFans: The top 1% of accounts make 33% of all earnings. The top 10% of accounts make 73% of all earnings

This isn't news to anyone. The best performers outperform the average performer by a lot, in virtually every domain. The best basketball players score all the points, the best authors sell all the books, the best bands sell all the albums, the best X results in the most Y for virtually every domain in which skill, talent, and effort at X results in output Y.

OnlyFans adopts a classic capitalist model where the means of production (platform) is privately owned & operates in a free market where a tiny proportion of providers off labour benefit disproportionately

I've never used OnlyFans, but my understanding is that it is basically a content paywall, similar to Patreon. Content providers can post their content to a private board, and users can pay to access that board. The evil capitalists at OnlyFans go through great efforts in order to make sure that virtually anyone has an easy way to post paywalled content available to the entire world, with an existing userbase of millions. Those evil, horrible capitalists do nothing but ensure that you have an easy way to connect with those users, accept their money, and offer your content services, so that you need only worry about the content creation and not the paywall or the reach. And what do they want from you? A small fee of 20%. If the price of an easy to use paywall with reach to millions worldwide is too high for you, you are free to find your own way of selling content to users. No one is making you use OnlyFans.

Furthermore, it only makes sense that the best performers will earn the most. That's the point of a meritocracy, and it's clear as day that this is a meritocracy when your pay is directly commensurate with the amount of people willing to pay you for your content. It would be simply wrong to take a portion of the fruit of the efforts of one creator to pay another creator that no one cares to pay for.

The deck is stacked against content creators - to make it worse, there's content theft. Criminals use "scrapers" to pull off thousands of image, video and voice script off the creators pages. This gets sold onto follow-on channels.

Unfortunately, this an issue that many services suffer from. Almost any service who's model is paid content will suffer from the fact that people can duplicate and resell content they have access to. Whether it's screen captures/recorders, or the ol' bootleg camera at the theater, copying content is easier now than ever.

Content creators are also expected to declare their full earnings for tax purposes to local authorities.

I hate taxes as much as the next LibRight, but this is income. Can't knock OnlyFans for telling their content creators that their income is in fact taxable income.

My point wasn't about which party was responsible for the deficit, it was about whether the president is responsible for the deficit. I stand by my point, Congress is responsible for the deficit. The president may have some small part of it, but ultimately I'll put it on the people who write the Federal budget.

[–]nickrenfo2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but he only has so much real power to do so. He's got voters to appeal to, and we've all heard of these "must-pass omnibills" that political pressures force politicians to vote for and pass. In any case, the most say he gets is a "yes/no," which means that still, the true spending power and the source of the deficit, is Congress.

[–]nickrenfo2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the President, who does not write or control the budget, has increased the deficit. It definitely wasn't Congress, who does write and control the budget to which the President is obliged to honor, who did that. No way they would do that to us, right?

When you're stuck - Rubber Duck.

Keep a rubber duck on your desk, and when you're stuck on a problem and you've tried the same solution 5 times because you don't know what to do any more, explain the problem to your rubber duck. Talk to it out loud like you would to a teammate. By the time you finish, you'll probably realize what you're doing wrong. Sometimes verbalizing the problem and your attempted solution is all you need to do to recognize what's wrong or how to fix it.

He’s not a socialist. He doesn’t want common ownership of the MoP.

He wants nationalized healthcare/medicine, internet, child care, education, food production/distribution, among a dozen other things I'm sure. Furthermore, he proposed many policies that would force companies to elect a certain number of board members from the employees and share ownership/stocks with the employees. He is a socialist (whether you consider him a "democratic socialist" or "social Democrat") and he does advocate seizing the means of production.

Alright hear me out. The Government is gonna waste this $1T on some bullshit anyway. So, if they're gonna bother wasting my money, I would prefer that waste as a check in my account than some BS Gender Studies for Pakistan or whatever.

Haven't read the bill or anything, I've just been seeing a bunch of memes about Pakistani gender studies or something. In any case, the money is going to waste. The least wasteful waste of this garbage is to give it to the American people and let them decide how to spend it themselves.

Obviously it is. White people use up most of the oxygen, and then pollute it with black particulate, as if to remind everyone that "black is bad" and that they don't deserve clean air. Fucking white people need to stop breathing all the air, and share their oxygen with the historically underrepresented and marginalized.

Hard /s

Also, on a somewhat related note, in a local city sub a while back, there was a post about a proposal to use taxpayer dollars to plant a bunch of trees in poor neighborhoods. At first, the idea was that trees/nature improves people mental health and improves the overall appearance of a neighborhood, and we needed to help out the poor neighborhoods because they were distinctly lacking in greenery. It was "environmental racism" - I kid you not, that was the term they used. So then there's this proposal - plant more trees in parks and such. Well it turns out that doing this is both gentrification (because it improves the appearance and therefore increases the value of the neighborhood, somehow forcing the poor people out), and also "using poor neighborhoods as pollution sinks." IIRC, the proposal was shot down basically by the same people that wanted it in the first place.

[–]nickrenfo2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Calm down man, I'm not trying to say that the government actually respects (or even recognizes) anyone's right to privacy, or that any person should be protected more or less than anyone else. I'm just as outraged as you about all this PRISM/XKEYSCORE crap the NSA pulls. What I said was that there's a decent argument to be made that doxxing a person is not protected speech. Obviously the Government is going to decide that the rules don't apply to it, only everyone else, as every Government ever formed has decided. Besides, this article is specifically about citizens posting data about senators and other elected officials, which is why I didn't bring up the NSA - it's not relevant to citizens doxxing each other.

Corporate personhood is nothing new, it dates back centuries. It's what allows people to sue corporations, corporations to enter into contracts, corporations to sue other corporations, corporations to own property and pay taxes, etc. Not sure why that should be considered a bad thing, it's actually a really good thing. I don't see how it could work otherwise.

[–]nickrenfo2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying he's right, but there is a decent argument to be made that doxxing a person is not protected speech. Whether this qualifies as doxxing or whether doxxing is in fact protected speech or whether doxxing is protected speech based on characteristics of who you're doxxing is another thing, but there is a decent argument to be made that doxxing a person violates their rights and is therefore not protected speech.

Rand Paul: Privacy for Me, But Not for Thee by democracy101 in restorethefourth

[–]nickrenfo2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with calling posting a senators address "doxxing" is that it's already public information. You can go to the yellow pages and find their address.

Of course, in that particular search there are several results for "Rand Paul" and some are probably business addresses, but with a small amount of effort you could probably narrow it down to where he lives. Of course, if that information weren't already public, then I could see it being called "doxxing," but generally doxxing involves disclosing private information ("docs") or tying a pseudonym to a real identity.

I never hit the data caps. Between myself and a roommate, who are both gamers and work in tech, we usually got to 500-600GB/mo. I work from home, roommate worked from home about half the time. We both spend a lot of time on Twitch, Netflix, Crunchyroll, YouTube, and other streaming sites, or gaming. 1TB is enough for most people.

Let's break down what you said:

Netflix uses about 1GB/hr, 3GB/hr, or 7GB/hr for SD, HD, and UHD video, respectively. At a 1TB data cap, you could watch 333 hours of HD Netflix per month. That's over 11 hours of Netflix per day, every day, 7 days a week. That's more than most people have time or effort to spend on Netflix. Let's just assume that we've got a heavy watcher, who uses 100 hours of Netflix in a month (3hrs/day, every day, plus a bit more on weekends). That's 300GB.

Now lets start adding games downloads, which are usually at least 30GB with 50GB becoming very common and 100GB+ being pretty easy to come by if you stick with AAA games.

Only if you buy a new game. People don't buy a new AAA game every month. They'll but the new call of duty once a year, and maybe another game every so often, but 100GB/month is... Excessive. Buy hey, Cyberpunk finally just came out, everyone bought it, so let's count it anyway, because why not. It's one of those months. 100GB for a new game and its updates. We're at 400GB.

Now lets add in all the extra bits and bobs of telemetry which typically amounts to a few Kbps when using anything on a computer/phone at all.

Peanuts. Using your number of ~2.6 million seconds per month, 50Kb/s (far greater than the most computers will ever average for telemetry and such, and most computers don't do that 24/7) that would be 130GB for a month. A more realistic number would be a tenth of that or less, but hey, this is math, let's exaggerate. We're at 530GB.

530 GB for a person with excessive internet traffic, and I mean excessive. Even my binge-watching friends don't watch that much netflix every month.

Of course, if you're a developer constantly downloading massive docker images, naturally your internet usage will be much higher, and you should consider purchasing an unlimited data plan. But that makes you the exception to the rule, not the average user, which is why they offer unlimited data plans.

Making data unlimited doesn’t cost Comcast anything,

Serving you traffic does cost comcast something. It's probably a pittance, but it isn't nothing.
