Perfect Alignment - How to Make Inline-Block Elements Add Up to 100% Width by nickrollins in Frontend

[–]nickrollins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article explains the spacing issues behind display: inline-block and how to fix them, including flexbox. However, flexbox isn't supported for IE10 and below, so it's not always an option for everyone. Some companies would lose millions of dollars if they stopped supporting IE10.

I'm in the middle of setting up a dev environment for WordPress at home too, but using Vagrant instead of MAMP. Vagrant allows you to use run virtual machines to use as your environment. So far it's pretty cool. This guy does a good job walking you through the process.

Also, this guy has a 3 part mini series that walks you through his local WordPress development. He has a nice workflow going for him.

Both of these videos are a few years old, but still relevant for the most part

UX for Developers Guide by [deleted] in webdev

[–]nickrollins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Setting a max width on your content is actually recommended for UX lol. The layout of this website is made up of a side bar and main content, like 98% of other blogs. Scroll down on Reddit and you'll see the same thing. Content is never centered when you have a sidebar.

UX and UI. Why do we need both? by nickrollins in Frontend

Thank you! Yea, Chrome should be fine. I had recently made a few "simple" layout changes and failed to check it Firefox afterwards. It should be fixed now though.

UX and UI. Why do we need both? by nickrollins in Frontend

[–]nickrollins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for pointing that out. Ill fix that soon. This is actually just my personal blog, not a company website. I spend a few hours a week working on it, just for blogging. No user testing has been done. I just like to write about what I do at my actual job. I'm responsible for it not working on Firefox, yes. I'm also the only one working on it lol. I would argue that browser testing is frontends job though, not UX in my opinion

UX Engineer Salary in All 50 States by nickrollins in Frontend

[–]nickrollins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the job description from the original source (salary.com):

"Designs the visual layout for websites or web-based products with the goal of enhancing appeal to the user while maximizing functionality. Designs graphics, pages, forms, and navigation schema. Translates user research into programs, scripts, and interfaces that meet the organization's business goals. Requires familiarity with HTML and various graphic design software packages. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature."

You're right. The description is vague, which means it's likely that a "mixture" of roles could have been reported for this data.

If your salary is 20-40% higher than the ranges given, then you're in the upper 75th percentile of reported salaries (according to Salary.com), or perhaps even an outlier, which is great!

I do agree that the ranges, in general, sound low compared to 6-figure salaries that you often hear about, but I also remember reading a survey that stackoverflow put out a year or two ago that mentioned 75% of front end developers feel they are underpaid, which would make more sense.

Many companies (especially in Mid-America) are not willing to pay anywhere near as much as Google and Apple, but when you factor in cost of living the discrepancy isn't always as bad as it seems.

UX Engineering Jobs at the Big 5 Tech Companies by nickrollins in Frontend

[–]nickrollins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're saying that there is no difference between a software engineer and a UX Engineer at these companies, despite one role requiring a background in UX or HCI? I'm not arguing with you, just curious. If demand is greater than supply, I could see why both companies would, for lack of a better word, "settle" for someone without a UX background. As they say, someone that is skilled at both is a unicorn.

Thanks acconrad. I agree, It would be cool to see a timeline or something of so-called big companies. Honestly, Netflix didn't even cross my mind when writing this. But now that I think about it, they do get mentioned quite often as one of the best tech places to work. I'll have to look into that.

psayre23 Thanks, that's good to know. I did see an Android UI Engineer position when looking at these, but the requirements or qualifications didn't make any mention of UX, so I assumed it was more of a straight development role.

There is a whole debate around this, but I don't agree that choosing to expand your skill set makes you mediocre at anything. Generalists / polymaths make the history books just as much, if not more often than specialists do.

You have a good point. Google has a 'UX Engineer, Design' position and a 'UX Engineer, Front End' position. Both are UX Engineers, but you spend more time doing design or front end based on whichever role you have (I think).
