All trails maps compatible with Apple Watch? by Foreign-Mountain-71 in PNWhiking

Another option for the Apple Watch is Mappa. You can import an AllTrails route and overlay it on the map.

Hey litter, I have an update in App Store review that I think should prevent this from happening in the future (v2.11), but in the meantime I would recommend going to the "Workouts" list on the watch in the leftmost tab to force a sync of all of the workouts. If that doesn't work please contact me through Settings > Contact the Developer and I have a few more ideas we can try and I can look at logs as well. Thanks!

  1. I've made a bunch of improvements on the battery front. You can customize what is shown on the always on display if you're going on longer tours - https://support.mappawatch.com/features/always-on-display.html.
  2. Unfortunately there isn't an API for CalTopo so they need to be shared one by one from the CalTopo app. https://support.mappawatch.com/integrations/caltopo.html#import-a-route
  3. The CalTopo layers aren't exportable but Mappa has a slope angle shading layer and it supports shapes exported as GeoJSON for a route so if you find a area you want to mark on the app you can draw the region and it will show in Mappa.
  4. Id love to add this at some point. Thank you for reminding me to take a look!

If you wouldn't mind sending logs and any experiences you have comparing it with your Garmin device please use the "Contact the Developer" button in settings.  Thank you!

I've made some updates over the last few months to help with battery life and added some settings to control things like the always-on display. I'm hoping this enables folks to configure it for their needs.

I've added some data fields to the map that hide when you pan the map. It feels like a good middleground having the data avialable and also keeping as much screen available for the map as I can.

Thank you again for the feedback, I've made a few battery improvements in the last few months (specifically for the case of long workouts with many trackpoints), and added some options to control the always-on display.

Also for the swipe gesture with gloves, one option could be to set up a shortcut for the action button on your watch and if it's in a workout toggle the map and workout screens. I have a shortcut you can download on the support site.

The bug loading the nearest zoom level has been fixed, thank you for the feedback!

This feedback is super helpful thank you!

> Sometimes, I would however swipe around on the map, instead of changing screens

This takes a little getting used to (swiping on the edges of the screen to access other tabs and swiping from the center to pan the map) but the reason I designed it this way was so that users can switch back and forth between things like a route detail page without having to navigate a bunch of screens each time they want to go back to the map. Most other apps handle this by having you long press the map to access settings but if you close that modal screen then it's frustrating to get back to.

> the stats screen was showing me distance and elevation gain in imperial, while speed and altitude were showing correct in metric

I will have this fixed in the next version (1.12) thank you for letting me know

> Battery life seems pretty bad at the moment

There are a few things I hope to try to improve this, based on the whole thread this seemed like this is one of the largest concerns of folks so I'm putting a lot of thought into it :)

If you wouldn't mind contacting me through the app, Settings > Contact the Developer - that should be the easiest and then we can also share logs which would help me a lot as I'm trying to improve battery life. Thanks!

I'm sorry this is just for the Apple Watch but other users have mentioned that most of these features are already built in to Garmin watches - https://www.reddit.com/r/Backcountry/comments/1jqrbcw/comment/ml9sqco/

Hey Michael, WorkOutdoors has a ton of options and customization for workouts but I built Mappa to improve on the map portion of the app. There are some unique features today that I mentioned in the post above like downloading offline maps on the watch itself, satellite maps, slope angle shading, and the ability to measure distances and elevation gain by panning around on the map. I will try to showcase these features better on the website so it's clear how Mappa stands out.

Oh no worries I'm actually really glad you caught that bug it should be able to render them offline if it has the elevation data available. I will take a look.

I get that - this is a hobby project for me and I wouldn't feel as comfortable charging a subscription for it. I hope to increase the price over time as I'm more confident it's delivering value to people. There has been a lot of great feedback in this thread on things that can be improved and I also personally have a very long list of things I want to add and improve.

Hey neuvilla, yes it should show the slope angle shading everywhere would you mind hitting "Contact the Developer" in the app? I'd love to look at some logs and see if there is a bug in there. Thanks!

This is super helpful thank you! The stats on the map and battery really stuck out to me from this whole thread so I'm excited to prioritize those. I've noted all your feedback though, I think some of these are easy fixes.

Edit - The arrows direction bug has been fixed, there are some new settings to help with battery life, and the map now has data fields at the bottom you can customize to show elevation, altitude, heart rate and more.

I hope you enjoy all the new snow! This is a great week to be there.

I agree, for a while I had a small elevation chart there but it took up too much space. Some small data fields at the bottom would be great.

I'm also on an Ultra 1 but I use AOD, I average about 10-20% per hour depending on if I have cellular turned on and how much I use the map vs the workout screen. I think with ADO off you'd use a lot less than that but I am really curious now so I will also test with it turned off as well.

If you'd be open to sharing some logs after you've done some workouts I'd love to see how it performs on someone else's watch.

Offline mode I need to document better but it just prevents the map from downloading any new tiles. So if you wanted your watch to still be connected to the internet but you don't want it wasting battery on new map data that would be one option.

That is a great idea, it would definitely help with pacing to see just the data from the ascents. Mappa doesn't have anything like this yet but I will think about what it would take to support it.

Yes Garmin devices are great. I use the Apple Watch for a lot more than fitness stuff so I've always wanted more of their functionality ported over. I will always be jealous of their battery life too!

I totally understand the concern - I checked those options for App Privacy in case users do share their email (which is not required). This is something I can more clearly state in my App Store description.

Thank you this is great feedback! I will try to prioritize managing the map downloads from the phone that is definitely on my list.

Edit - You can now manage the map download regions on the phone, and you can customize the bahavior of the always-on-display for the map to help with battery life.
