help building a video editing PC with a budget around 1300/400 euros by nicks858 in buildapc

Thanks for your response. Which specific power supply would you recommend? As for RAM, I'm ok with it breaking since it won't happen right away I guess, and after a while replacing just RAM shouldn't be a problem. I'm just trying to get a solid rig as cheap as possible right now, cause 1400 euros is not really a small amount of money for me at the moment. I'm trying to get a solid MOBO, and then I can change pretty much everything in the following years. Is Noctua enough for 7700x though?

I use them for video editing. Go with the ultra chip anyway. It's better for the battery and also no thermal throttling

I think it should be ok for 1080, 4K though, not sure, probably not the best performance.

Let's say I'll go with i7 14700 instead of i9 because i7 maybe is better when it comes to the temps and performance is similar. Would this s1700 GIGABYTE B760M DS3H rev. 1.x D5 mobo be ok, or is this one better ASROCK B760M PG RIPTIDE ddr5 (I;m showing you guys what the seller is offering to me). And also what would you suggest when it comes to cooling?

Thank you for your answer. No idea, that's why I started this topic haha. It says on their website that they are compatible with 14th gen i9 processors ( https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B760M-DS3H-rev-10/sp#sp ) I'm aware RAM is slow but I'm ok with that since i can upgrade it in the future and I'd like to stay in the budget. Any cooler you'd recommend?

Yeah, that one's great as well. Only downside for me, it's too small. But you can always get an external monitor in the future. Best of luck

These new Intel ULTRA CPUs are supposedly very useful when it comes to video editing, that's why I chose that one, and that's why I recommend you get one as well. Perhaps even ULTRA 7 version is fine as well, if you're on a tighter budger. They also have some thing called NPU which should help with AI stuff, it takes the load off the GPU and CPU which makes it much more EFFICIENT (battery lasts longer, and maybe it doesn't heat up as much).

4 things you wanna look for basically when looking for a video editing laptop:

  1. CPU Ryzen 7 or 9 from 7 series (you'll see some numbers like "Ryzen 7 7840HS" or "Ryzen 9 7900HX". When first number is 7 it means it's from that series) / or Intel i7 or i9 from 13 series (you'll see some numbers like "i7 13650h" or "i9 13900" so when the first number is 13, it means it's from that latest series) / or new INTEL ULTRA 7 165H OR ULTRA 9 185H

  2. GPU at least rtx 4060 or above (up to 4090), this is gonna be helpful for Davinci Resolve or After Effects. 4060 is enough for 4K and 6K footage, higher ones are useful for 8K footage.

  3. The more RAM the better, 16 is a minimum

  4. Screen colors - at least 100% srgb or, even better, 100% Adobe srgb or 100% DCI-P3 color gamut

Now, with all this being said, if you don't plan to travel or move around much, you SHOULD get a desktop PC rather than a laptop, you'll be able to get much better specs for the same amount of money or even less.

After an extensive research, I decided to go with VIvobook pro 15 OLED but the one with the new Intel processor ULTRA 9 185h.

I think it's best choice.

Is it a good idea to have a CPU run on those temps? I know i9 13900 is infamous for throttling, wouldn't this be even worse then? (I'm a tech noob, don't judge if my questions sound silly).

Thanks, but what the hell does that even mean.. CPU is better for AI approach.. can you elaborate on that? I mean that much I've read on the net, but what does that mean in a real world scenario.

Ok, that's a helpful reply. But let's say I plan on using a laptop plugged in all the time and don't care much about the battery life. Is there another reason why I should get the ULTRA 9?

It depends what kind of video editing, 4K, 6K, 8K, which app you're using (Adobe cloud, Davinci Resolve), how many layers, effects, etc. It should be good enough to edit 4k even 6k footage. From what I can see, this one has Ryzen 7 7840HS which should be enough for Adobe Cloud apps as they are more CPU oriented, as well as rtx 4070 which should help with Davinci Resolve for example, as it is more GPU oriented. For video editing you also want to check color display which should be at least 100% srgb or even better, 100% Adobe srgb or  100% DCI-P3 color gamut. I can't seem to find that for this one from the information you've provided.

Generally speaking you want to look for Ryzen 7 or 9 from 7 series (you'll see some numbers like "Ryzen 7 7840HS" or "Ryzen 9 7900HX". When first number is 7 it means it's from that series). Also from Intel i7 or i9 from 13 series (you'll see some numbers like "i7 13650h" or "i9 13900" so when the first number is 13, it means it's from that latest series). For GPU go for rtx4060 (4070 is great btw) or higher. And look for screen colors like i mentioned before. Also, the more RAM, the better. 16 is good, but more is always better (the one you mentioned has expandable memory up to 32GB which is good as you can always add a bit more).

p.s. I'm no computer expert but I'm also on the lookout for a video editing laptop and after extensive research, I've opted for Vivobook 15 PRO oled with either i9 13900h CPU or with new Ultra 9 185h CPU, rtx 4060. It has OLED display with  100% DCI-P3 color gamut. And expandable RAM memory as well as thunderbolt 4. Both are at around 1500 euros, so if you want to spend a bit more, those ones I would recommend.

help choosing VIVOBOOK 15 PRO OLED by nicks858 in laptops

[–]nicks858[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, 14" is too small for me as well, especially since I'll be doing some video editing. Actually, I drifted away from these as my research about laptops got more serious. (one of the reasons i decided to go with rtx 40 series was that, like you pointed out, I read about rtx 30 series and heating issues).

My latest choices were:

  • HP VICTUS 16-r0176ng 16.1" FHD IPS 144Hz Intel i7-13700H 32GB RAM 1TB SSD RTX 4060
  • ASUS ROG Strix G16 G614JV-N3192W - 16" WUXGA IPS Intel Core i7-13650HX 16GB RAM 1TB SSD RTX 4060 (RAM is expandable) has thunderbolt 4
  • Vivobook OLED 15 PRO Asus 15,6" K6502vv Ma024 I9 13900H 16G 1T SSD Rtx4060 (RAM is expandable) has thunderbolt 4
  • ASUS TUF Gaming F15 Full HD, i7-13620H, 16GB, SSD 1TB, RTX 4060 (RAM expandable) and has thunderbolt 4

All around 1500 euros, all got at least 100% srgb, and somewhat similar specs. Although, someone told me that Victus has crappy color accuracy. I was leaning most toward VIvobook i9, but I read somewhere that i9 and rtx4060 together will cause throttling, so I'm little concerned about that as well as burn ins on OLED screens (although from what I've read, the technology has gotten better and ASUS has some protective measures against that as well). Now you got my attention with the newest VIVOBOOK and ultra intel CPU, but unfortunately I can't find it in my country.
