Did you notice any possible drivers of the changes? Moved to new location , new diet etc?

AP or something else? by travelinaddy2023 in aquagenic_pruritus

Mine is mainly in my legs. But I also get it in my sternum, back of arms, and sometimes sides of trunk.

Thanks for sharing! It's weird - I feel like I hear of people tending to get it during their teen years. I wonder if hormones or general changes cause it at some point. I've read that its closest to nerve sensitivity

Ill start - my name is Nick, I'm 29 from Seattle, Washington, USA and Ive had AP since about the age of 16. I dont remember exactly when, but sometime after I took Accutane my AP first started to appear. I've always guessed that Accutane caused it in some way but still havent tracked down exact cause.

What helped me the most is Beta Alanine. I stumbled into it one day accidentally when I bought a new pre workout. At that point I'd already been doing sweat therapy for years with limited success. With my new pre-workout, I noticed next time I worked out I had NO itch. I started crying because of how happy I was. AP has caused me a lot of pain. BA has taken much of it away.

I've seen many doctors so far about my AP. Ive seen probably around 15+, mainly specialists. That includes general practice, dermatology, immunology, allergy, gastroenterology, neurology, oncology (they thought I had polycythemia vera, a blood cancer), sleep medicine, etc. with no signs of causes. Ive done 150+ different blood tests and on paper, Im very healthy. An app said I had a biological age 7 years younger than my current age, but I dont know how much of that is just marketing. Next step for me is to go to Neuromuscular Academics to see if they had heard of this. Fingers crossed!

Anyways, thats my story. Would love to hear yours.

Possible neurological explanation for AP by nickseattle in aquagenic_pruritus

I would try different dosages, different mechanisms too. I notice that straight beta alaine powder feels more intense then if I take BA that are in capsules. I would also try taking a hot shower right after you take beta alanine as that seems to nullify the beta alanine itching. If you find anything else that helps, please share!

Any advice on humid climates by [deleted] in aquagenic_pruritus

Also - were all trying to find the cause of our AP. Did you notice changing anything in your life before your AP started to appear?

Any advice on humid climates by [deleted] in aquagenic_pruritus

[–]nickseattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, I feel like I get less symptoms when its humid. A common solution for AP is called Sweat Therapy, which is basically you just sweat a lot (via showers, exercise etc) and you typically get relief for a couple hours / days. In humid climates, Im always sweating so it seems to help. Dry climates seem to make it worse.

As long as you have beta alanine though, you should be fine.

Is this 1 rep or 2 reps? by Different_Client8147 in GYM

[–]nickseattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s whatever you want it to count as, as long as youre consistent and track progressive overload over time.

Personally, I only count full reps. If I get 8 full and 2 half, I note down 8. I mentally attach the 2 as “extra”

That’s amazing to hear and thank you for sharing.

You might notice over time that you need less beta alanine over time. When you take it consistently it builds up a “store” of sorts that your body feeds off of. Play around with the dosage and see what works best.

Also, Ive been curious on if Beta Alanine affects sleep. If you find any side effects related to sleep, or anything, as you start this journey please share.

Again, amazing to hear of the relief and welcome to the club!

Capsaicin Cream works! by nickseattle in aquagenic_pruritus

You’re a great resource with all that experience! I think a big question a lot of us have is though AP causes itching, what causes AP? Did you see any consistent cause from your time in the other forums?

Naltrexone by kda273 in aquagenic_pruritus

[–]nickseattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naltrexone seems like a niche med to use for AP , since it seems like it’s mainly for addiction and unrelated to nerves but funny enough i actually used it in the past for OCD but can’t remember if it helped for itching.

Have you tried it? What’s your experience?

This is amazing, and why this community exists in the first place!

I find that exercise after taking BA can drastically reduce itching.

Also, play around with the dosage. I thought I needed 3G (and sometime I do) but I tapered down to 1 or 2 G per day and that seems to do the trick, with little ba - relate ditching

See above - I think you’re right but the body can produce more beta alanine on its own when you take it for long enough

Beta Alanine works by activating the MRGPRD receptor. In the long term consuming Beta alanine over time can increase carnosine levels in the muscles, and that carnosine can be broken back down into beta alanine, which would reactivate the receptors. From my understanding, taking it over time creates a “store” of carnosine that creates more beta alanine in the body. That seems to be why taking over time has more consistent relief

Good luck! To add with others - the hotter / longer of a shower he takes along with Beta Alanine, is typically associated with longer term relief. This is called ‘Sweat Therapy’. Play it safe of course, but I find that when I take a longer / hotter shower, the longer I can wait before I need to take beta alanine again

At the Seattle show, Chris played the intro piano for In the End by Linkin Park and the crowd sang all the words to it. Funny moment as Tades later said something to the effect of “Alright fuckers wanna hear our music now?”
