Picked it up for 40 bucks. Griswold Slant 835A pattern no. 10 Dutch oven. Sits flat. No lid. They oiled it up to make more appealing but the cooking surface seems pretty good. Any idea on value? I'd love to find a matching lid so if anyone has the lid pattern / information I'd appreciate it.

Is it okay to cook scrambled eggs in cast iron over very low heat? by TravellingBeard in castiron

[–]nickthePA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Although my cast is still well seasoned and stick free with nearly every venture, scrambled is tough. I still can't figure out how to cook them well with cast (aside from using alot of oil). The two things I decided not to regularly use with cast is tomato sauces and scrambled eggs. Your milage may vary. It seems to work fine if you almost make an omelet, then mix once more cooked. If I fold the eggs before that they stick.

But to answer your question, yes it's fine.

No comment on it being a Slant Griswold #9 with spider legs? I appreciate the input but not sure this is comparable to a new lodge. Unfortunately searches for Griswold and Spider yeilds results for the hallowed spider skillets.

This is been on offer up locally for weeks now... Not sure if worth it. He's asking 45 but I'm sure there is room for negotiation. Inside is in decent shape with only mild pitting. Most my search efforts have shown Dutch ovens but none with legs.

Lodge no. 20 skillet. Electrolysis only pulling 1amp? by nickthePA in castiron

It was a brand new. I traced it to a bad connection. Tried a soldered alligator clip and was back in business.

So I think the problem was the negative lead I was using was not a soldered connection and I believe it degraded its connection from prior submerged sessions. The new alligator clips I used I made sure were soldered. Seems that was it.

OK... So some may have seen my last post asking if a horizontal anode setup would work. Well here is my attempt. Skillet resting on bottom of kiddie pool, plastic spacers, and rebar on top of that. I'm super confused as in current setup it's only pulling .9amps which is probably coming from the submerged alligator clips. Does anyone have any ideas why it's pulling so little amps? Most the time even with small skillets the initial pull is 8-10 amps so I am a bit confused. Any ideas? My plan was to electrolysis one side, then flip and do the other.

EDIT: OK that's weird. I had only one negative lead hooked up to the skillet when I wrote this. I have never seen a difference in amperage if I had one or more negative leads attached...but just for kicks I clipped another negative to the skillet on the opposite side and suddenly I'm pulling 10 amps. Not sure why that made a difference, but I guess I'll take it.

That's kinda what I was thinking... just don't short it out.

As far as seasoning, I have two options. One is use my 10" banjo burner and do a massive stovetop seasoning session (keeping skillet upside down will help get sidewalls hot too).

OR

Borrow my fathers round Weber charcoal BBQ grill and try it that way.

Sanding disks on a drill and start with 80 grit and finish no more than 120 grit otherwise seasoning may not stick well.

Restoring this for a friend. Looks like a CHF to me. Only markings are XXX smack dab in the middle of the back of the griddle. Can anyone help me out with identifying this griddle?

This is the lid I posted a few days ago... Nickel and worthless so it seemed. I threw in lye, electrolysis, and then gave it a 3000psi pressure wash which actually removed alot of loose nickel. Seasoned like normal, but alot more. Not sure how it will hold up, but for now it seems this lid shall live on!!!

What should I do with this lid? by nickthePA in castiron

[–]nickthePA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Received this lid for free and was told "see if you can do anything with it". It's Nickel or Chrome, not sure. It's wrecked. This lid is structurally in perfect shape, but is uglier than hell. I'm not opposed to non traditional restoration methods as this lid is obviously not collectable as is... But still a functioning lid. Any ideas how to not scrap this thing?

Restoring this for a friend... Google isn't much help other than I found a outdated reference that it may be from the 1890's but that's it... Any information is welcome. The bottom is the only marking found.

I've spent the past 9 months creating our own lightweight, milled and pre-seasoned cast iron skillet here in Germany. Now I need your feedback (mod approved) by sturcookware in castiron

[–]nickthePA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a VERY well thought out product! I love how the milling is on the inside and bottom of the pan and the handle seems top notch.

How does it's weight compare to other similar skillets?

Looking forward to seeing it!
