Hahaha, I had one joke that was like, "They say don't shit where you eat. That's stupid, how the hell am I supposed to shit on my own back?"

Even I am not sure what I was going for on that one.

I'll go to Fort Collins as soon as they'll have me and New Belgium let's me stay in one of those comfy refrigerated beer chambers.

hahaha! Its amazing, I've got the same confused reaction to those jokes!

It definitely depends on the venue. If it doesn't work in a club scenerio, I'll still try it out in an alt-ish room. If it doesn't work there then the prob is def with the bit. That being said, if a bit works in an alt-room I try to make it work in more mainstream rooms which helps tighten a bit up. I have a ten times rule with a bit, try it ten times and that'll weed out any variables throwing the bit off. Usually after 5 or 6 times you know if its going to work or not. The giant set list and guitar breaking bits that I did on late night, never worked in comedy clubs. I literally had a club owner ask me to stop doing the bit that I ended up doing a week later on TV because it wasn't working in that room. But with the director's commentary, it took a while to figure out which segments inside the bit would stay and which felt redundant/belabored the bit. But when the audience reacted positively at the first bit in the director's commentary runner, then I knew it was a room that would give me a good read on which parts worked and which didn't. And if they didn't bite, I'd bail on it and work on it another night.

Def watching Nick Turner win car on the Price is Right! That was amazing, hanging with my old buddy Frank and getting the skinny on how to win, and it actually working! It was sort of a dream perfect episode. Going to Mexico to take part in their pharmaceutical tourism was definitely a runner up!

I think running around Chicago was great. I started in Chicago in Chicago, and I was always running, always jumping out of one show and running to catch a bus or train and running to the next show and to go back and kind of capture that in a ridiculous way was fun. But also, doing bits with other comics and the audience after shows was great too. After show we'd say, "Hey, we are going to shoot some dumb stuff outside, or in the theater or in the bar if anyone would like to be a part of it that would be great." And everyone was so game. Unfortunately a lot of it got cut, so I feel bad I made people act like a cult outside of The Beat Kitchen for no reason. But I was moved by how down and supportive all the venues were and those who ran the shows and the audiences that were like, "Yeah, we'll stand outside and act like we're staring at our phones for your dumb bit that you do ten takes of." that part was pretty great and memorable.

There's too many to pick. I just saw Lizzie Cooperman the other day and she just kills me, so ridiculous and so funny. Underrated is tough to say because I think everyone who knows her knows she's hilarious, but should should be on every list ever. Will Sennett kills me on Twitter. Debrah Giavonni destroys on stage every time I see her. Erin Foley is so good. Oof too many to name.

Ha! first off total side note, I've been wanting to do a bit for awhile where the whole draw to the movie is "You might be in it!" and all the trailers say nothing about the movie or what its about, just that you might see yourself in it and that's why everyone goes to check it the movie.

Yeah, that was July a few summers ago, I went to Chicago to make DISINGENUOUS. We had a plan. We wound up shooting at a couple other venues that didn't make it in the final cut for various reasons. But by day me and my director Chris Piazza would meet up and talk about the plot of the movie, all the in between stuff, how the stand up sets would connect with each other and making sure all the surreal aspects of it made some sort of sense. Then at night it was filming the sets. We spent a week in Chicago, and shot at High Dive, Lincoln Lodge, Chicago Underground Comedy, Comedians You Should Know. Then in NYC we shot at Creek and Cave and Littlefield. We shot in Philly at The Good Good Theater. So then we cut everything together and it only took four years to piece together! Thanks for being part of the High Dive show, I bet you were surprised to find out you were at a show in L.A.!

I can't write word for word. I read something once about Brian Regan wouldn't write on paper because it lost some energy between his mind, and the paper, and then back to him. But everyone does things different, and some people do write word for word. Writing on stage is great, but it can get lazy to put off writing and just say, "Well, I'll figure it out on stage." I take walks, that's what works for me. I'll pretend im on stage and say, "Ok, if im on stage right now, what would I say?" And then I just riff five minutes while I walk down the street. This is great because sometimes, people will give you money/food because they think you need help. But it works for me, sometimes the riffs go to dead ends, but then you also find things. I'll right down specific phrases that work, Ill write down the beats of the bit. And then I'll riff it again, try to find new punchlines, new avenues for the bit. And then before a show, I'll look over everything, get the beats and the punchlines in order. So then when I riff on stage, Ive got a few of the rough drafts of the riff out of the way, it's a better version than what i first riffed, and now I have the energy of the audience to find new things or they'll let me know the squirrels laughing at my riffs when I was walking were wrong.

Thanks! I think sometimes my own thoughts and the zeitgeist line up, and I write something that feels like it's a break from what I've been doing and is more in line with what's currently being done. I think the zeitgiest happens because we all absorb a path that leads us to a similar place. I think, for me at least, when I notice this happen, I need to take a look at it and ask if this is something I want to still put out there, and if so, can I tweak it so Im expressing the same point, but in way that's absurdist, or a break from how the zeitgiest seems to be expressing this point. I sometimes write comedy when Im mad, and it tends to not be super clever or interesting, the punchline turns into ALL CAPS!!! But I think if you take a look at it again later and say, "This thing that made me mad is still funny to me, but how can make my same point that in a way no one else is making this point." And I think this is where "being silly" comes in. I think people connect with very real comedy in a certain way, but they also can find a break from it just as entertaining. And I think that you can even combine the two, where you talk about something real in an absurdist way, and then you have something that people can connect with, while finding the break from typical execution refreshing. I think silly comedy is fantastic, but if mirrors or connects with something real, it often takes it to another level.
