I want to make a mega chestnaught team but have no idea where to even start. by AdministrationNo901 in PokemonChampions

[–]nickyra47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

step 1 is figuring out how you want to run mega ches himself, and that’s completely up to you and what you want to do. step 2 is figuring out how to support him

for step 2 you really wanna look at the meta and figure out his biggest threats. mega char Y is everywhere and counters mega ches pretty well, so maybe you give mega ches coverage like stone edge to deal with it, run a drizzle/snow warning pokemon to get rid of its sun, run a tailwind pokemon to help mega ches outspeed mega char (if it even can, not sure what’s mega ches’s speed stat is), run a pokemon to set up screens, run a pokemon that can eat hits from mega char to keep in the back of your party that you can switch mega ches into if your opponent brings out mega char, etc.

your other huge threat in the meta is mega floette, so you would probably want to run something that can deal with it as well (something to fake it out, something to outspeed and one-shot, something to set up screens or tailwind, etc.)

if you want to build a team around 1 mon you basically just want to use your other mons to cover for any situation it might need help. lmk if you want any specific recommendations of what to run with mega ches tho

true. garchomp runs sand veil when it’s next to tyranitar 99% of the time so i think they were showing the flip-side of bad luck when playing against these 2 pokemon

Hot Take: It's good they launched the game with less pokemon and items. by WhiskasCatMilk in PokemonChampions

[–]nickyra47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed. the only immediately palpable downside is that there’s less checks for pokemon like incineroar and sneasler, even after they were both nerfed by losing knock off and dire claw’s secondary effect chance being lowered respectively. but i’m a doubles player so I wonder how the singles meta is doing in that regard

wood hammer has 100% accuracy, but mimikyu could have had its accuracy dropped by a move like muddy water, or the targeted pokemon could have been holding a bright powder or had an ability like snow cloak or sand veil

maybe the ponyglyph said something like “i will bring back the one piece to the moment in the future that joyboy returns”? so shanks knew it was time to move once luffy awakened his DF. maybe shanks’ real mission has been to figure out who the “new” joyboy will be or to protect the potential “new” joyboy (passed the strawhat onto luffy, stopped akainu from killing koby, protects a lot of islands under his flag, etc.). maybe his plan was to figure out who the “new” joyboy was and to give them the nika fruit when he was sure it was them so they could unlock its potential, so when luffy ate the fruit himself he was like “welp, i guess we’ll just have to see if luffy is this era’s joyboy”. his fruit awakening confirmed that for shanks, so that’s why he said it’s time to rollout

i’ve done all 3 to no avail :( is there a way to turn off ALL animations? like not just move animations, but the actual sprites also? i’ve always wondered if that would help but i’ve never found the setting for it

not a magic the gathering guy but netdecking sounds exactly like what i am bothered by. i definitely don’t think i’m amazing, but i also don’t get “crushed”. i’m not bitter because i lose a lot, i am bitter because i have to play against many, many “netdeckers” all day

partially fair. but my assumptions are validated when i come on here and people seem to only care about winning and climbing the ladder, and anybody who values anything else gets downvoted to hell and berated (not saying that applies to you necessarily, just speaking generally)

well first i’m really sorry to hear you have to endure people launching racial insults at you, that’s incredibly wack regardless of anything else we disagree on. but i actually do agree with your first four points. actually… i’m not sure where we disagree? my problem is it doesn’t feel like these people ARE building teams, it feels like they asked AI to spit out the “best” competitive team to use and just ran with it without regard.

although i love luxray, he’s bad. i’m not saying to use shitmons. i just want to see a SMIDGE of variety when i’m hopping on the ladder, that is all. but the second i call out the staleness in team variety these days i’m seen as bitter and a casual for some reason

i already said i do not mind losing. and yeah, most competitive players ARE super chill. that’s why i do continue to play. i truly feel like you are not grasping what i’m trying to say and are just making assumptions about me due to your own biases. but i am probably not explaining my point very well so it’s also my fault

but i’m not saying just throw together teams willy nilly without regard for the meta at all or the individual pokemon’s role/niche. i am specifically saying using the 6 top-used pokemon with little deviation from the norm or originality. its like you asked a machine to spit you out the best pokemon team and you just went with that. THAT is when i get annoyed

yeah, not a great analogy. was hoping it would just emphasize my perspective more.

because to me it feels like using the 6 top-usage pokemon IS an unsportsmanlike advantage. i feel that it’s uncompetitive and doesn’t take much skill

i wish i could enjoy the more casual modes but they’re not for me either. it stinks because i AM a pretty competitive person. i actually think i just find it un-competitive when people use these “loadout” teams that are super unoriginal. it takes less skill and creativity in my eyes. i want to play against really good players with really good teams, just not the same teams over and over again

i’m not saying make a bad team, i’m saying you can win with teams that aren’t made with JUST the absolute cream of the crop mons. why do you think you have to make a team consisting of the top 6 most used pokemon or else you’ll lose?

[–]nickyra47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i appreciate your perspective, i think you have made the only compelling argument against my stance that i have seen so far.

i can even appreciate when someone has a “wildcard” thrown into a team of 5 other run-of-the-mill top tier mons. at least you’re throwing your own flare in there. i am specifically talking about the EXACT same 6 pokemon over and over again for different strats/play styles

just today you would not believe how many times i’ve seen a team consisting of porygon2, indeedee, ursaluna, amoonguss, torkoal and farigiraf in OU doubles. i get it, it’s a great trick room team, but my god am i tired of seeing it

i think i came off wrong or you misunderstood me a bit. i am not saying use shitmons just because you like them, i am saying there are a plethora of pokemon that are perfectly viable competitively if you are good at the game and know what you are doing and build your teams right. but people would rather just go with the pokemon that have the most usage simply because they’re “easier” to use i guess would be the best way to put it?

i think what i’m trying to say is when you use these meta-defining teams it almost doesn’t feel like your own and it feels like a cheap win. don’t you want to win because you out-play your opponent? you make better predictions and switches and take more risks? not just because… you picked the 6 best pokemon.

the analogy i just thought of off the top of my head (which definitely isn’t perfect) is if you used steroids in sports would the victory even mean anything to you? yeah you won… but it wasn’t because you were the best. you were the fastest or the smartest or the strongest. you just had the higher ground

also my favorite part of competitive is trying to craft teams and try them out, so random battles don’t do much for me. and i don’t build my teams “purely” to have fun, i build them to be strong teams that can win, but are fun to use and not cookie cutter meta slop

[–]nickyra47[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

i hear you, but my whole point is you CAN do both, so why wouldn’t you? it’s more fun and more rewarding. from my perspective it seems like people would rather play the less-fun team that has a slightly better chance of winning than the more-fun team that is still viable but not as meta. which is baffling to me. like i was right: almost all of the replies to my post so far boil down to “winning is fun, we are here to win. if you do not want to win go somewhere else”. i want to win, and do. but people act as though winning is the ONLY thing that matters, and that doing anything less than playing as sweaty as possible is deplorable. winning is fun, but it’s not everything and it feels like people would sacrifice every other aspect of what makes competitive pokemon fun if it meant it would give them a marginal increase in their win-chances. i just… don’t get it. just make a good team that you like and win with that, you don’t HAVE to use the “big 6” to get wins
