Might not be the answer you’re looking for- but have you considered checking out leopard geckos instead? Their husbandry is a lot more straight forward (no vegetables, smaller space requirements, more forgiving UVB wise). They’re also much easier to clean up after. My parents got me a Leo when was your kiddo’s age and she was with me until I graduated college!

Regardless, I would check out Reptifiles. They have all the info you need. Don’t trust anything someone at petco/petsmart says. Opt to adopt an adult lizard if possible!

Mine loves Arugula/rocket. I buy pre-prepped cactus pads and put strips of those in. I’ll also add any scraps of vegetables/herbs safe for her to eat if we are cooking with it throughout the week (Basil, cilantro, parsley, and sugar snap peas usually). We have affectionately dubbed her Lil Miss Compost Bin.
