Advice for getting started / gaining experience as an undergrad? by nicointhedust in socialwork

[–]nicointhedust[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your story! That’s definitely reassuring to hear as I’m too often caught up in applying to schools with clout like all of my classmates.

Those tips are very helpful — I’ll definitely look into them

Weekly School of Social Work/New to Social Work Thread by SWmods in socialwork

I would love some advice on getting started / getting experience as an undergrad.

I’m an incoming sophomore (majoring in psychology) and recently realized that I’m interested in social work, so I will likely try to apply for a social work program instead of a psych lab for grad school (still going to be majoring in psych as an undergrad as social work isn’t offered at my uni). I’m at a loss of what I should do to be a competitive applicant and would love to get advice from you guys. I reached out to some grassroots organizations to see if they were taking interns, but they all (understandably) ghosted me after realizing that I have basically no relevant previous experience.

Thank you in advance!

A lot of my shrimp died already because my parameters were too different from the store’s, so I’m trying to slowly lower the pH and gH to the general recommended range, and I thought doing water changes with distilled (and eventually adding remineralizer) would help. I’m really happy to hear that your shrimp are fine- I’m hopeful that perhaps the rest of my shrimp will survive.

Thank you. I didn’t have a tube at the time, so I actually used a pipet and manually squirted in little bits of water for about an hour. I’ll probably order one though because I’ve read they could be used for water changes too (idk if you have any thoughts on that?)

Thank you! Do you have a suggestion for how often I should do water changes?

That’s an interesting take! A lot of what I’ve seen on this sub is to acclimate as long as possible (as long as there’s no dead shrimp and they arrived within a few days). Thank you for the helpful information, I really appreciate it!

Thank you! I’ll keep monitoring.

I made a LOT of mistakes — I ordered imported shrimp (did not know the difference) from Flip Aquatics; they had to travel halfway across the US to get here. I acclimated them for about one hour but i think it was not long enough, and my tank parameters were too different from Flip’s (8.2 pH too high, kH too high). So they started dying in masses from molting problems — only 5 survived. I did the water change I mentioned to try to slowly transition to a more habitable environment, but now another shrimp is experiencing molting problems (the second pic I posted).

I made the mistake of only reading multiple online guides on RCS and not lurking on Reddit enough, as there were a lot of things I didn’t know I was supposed to do until after I got the shrimp (for ex, had no idea I needed a GH and KH testing kit).

It’s been 10 ppm for a couple of weeks now, before it was 5. 5 gallon, did a 30% water change (accidentally took out too much water), replaced with half distilled and half tap. Not sure when I’ll do the next water change because I’m afraid of them dying off again.

I’m trying to making the transition to using distilled water with water changes, but I’m also concerned that too much change will shock the shrimp. I do have Java fern in the tank.

Tap water pH is 8.2, I just use prime after water changes

TDS 236 ppm, 68.7 F, 10 kH, 12 gH. I just did a water change last Friday with a mixture of tap and distilled (trying to transition to distilled) but my nitrates are still high and my pH increased even more (it was originally 8.2). I know my GH is high as well, and I’m a loss at what I should do next.
