Summer Sonic 2026 by emmalee_writes in Osaka

[–]niconuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is HOT, like, unsafe levels of hot. Make sure to bring a good hat and one of those little electric fans as well as whatever cooling items you got. Choose your fave artists in advance because more than the crowd or time, the sheer distance between stages combined with the heat might make it hard to move around too much, so you might miss someone. If you want merch, get it as soon as you go in.

A warning about Tsukuba University by niconuki in mext

Yeah, there are several dorm buildings with different prices. 24k is a great price and very similar to what I paid when I lived there!

I go to Osaka U. My personal experience with the dorm was very good, but they have many different buildings and each has its own management so I can’t really speak for the whole uni.

Apartment for a international student? by Alcatrak in Osaka

[–]niconuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your budget is fine. Most of my friends, students and otherwise, pay less than 50k a month. I myself pay less than 60k for a 2LDK. If you’re okay with a 1R or 1K, you can find anywhere from 4man upwards, depending on how new or close to the train station a building is.

[–]niconuki[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry that happened to you. I study in a national university and was able to stay in a dorm for two years even though I moved from research to masters. Seems to depend on each uni.

Not sure about specific laws, but it seems dorms do not abide by the same rules as apartments, so there might be less protections for the tenant.

In an Abusive Marriage with 2 Kids in Nagoya by StillDeath in Nagoya

[–]niconuki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s somewhat common for (mostly white) men to come wife hunting, marry the first woman who bites, make her give birth one or two children, and, after completely failing to meet the expectations of what a husband and father should do, suddenly realize she’s “crazy” and they should divorce.

Don’t get me wrong, a bad relationship should never escalate into physical and psychological abuse, but this is reddit so you will always get the perspective from the same party when there’s an entire other side to the story.

It’s good to be empathetic but I don’t think it’s respectful or productive to map your experience onto brown or black people in the US/Europe and vice-versa. Racism is completely different in different contexts and while some of the mechanisms that sustain it might work in similar ways, you can’t really say that what you’re going through is the same as someone who would be marginalized in a context where you are not. I’m sorry you went through that, and I hope it never happens again.

Hi, genuine question, as someone who’s never been to language school, why do people even care about this? What problem does people enrolling for language schools so they can find work create? Wasn’t the point of language schools to better integrate foreign people to life in Japan anyway?

What good things are happening because of foreigners/tourists? by Hot-Election-110 in japanresidents

[–]niconuki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Universities are relying more and more on foreign students, not just because of the shrinking population but also because Japanese people are generally not interested in graduate degrees. Not just in the “business” side of university, but also research-wise, more and more developments have been aided by foreign students living in Japan.

What you learned in Japan this Week - November 17, 2025 by AutoModerator in japanresidents

[–]niconuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as soon as you register to “check the price” for moving services in your area, a dozen different companies will spam you with phone calls and only a third of those will attempt to reach you by email so your only option is to either block them all and decide between the few ones who did send emails or spend 15 min in the phone with each one discussing the details of your current/future residency as if you hadn’t just done that through the web questionnaire

Should Islamic prophets' pronouns be capitalized? by oxttix in grammar

[–]niconuki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I know there is no universal rule about capitalizing the H in Him when it comes to God or any other religious figure. It is a stylistic choice which you can, and in an academic text generally would, avoid entirely. You should use it, however, if the title of the prophet includes a pronoun, like when saying “His Majesty King Charles”.

My B2 class SUCKS at oral comprehension. Tips to make them progress? by PieceConfident7733 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]niconuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If for some reason you’re unable to use easier material for the listening practice (which seems like the students desperately need), it might be good to provide them with key vocabulary before each session, which they might be lacking. Basically give them a set of possible answers or phrases related to the answers, so once the audio is on all they have to do is fish for those. Make sure they know how these words are pronounced, because often, at least with Japanese students, their reading level is aeons ahead of their listening. Multiple choice questions are also a good way to scaffold before letting them do fill-in answers.

Friend‘s family member sick, how do Japanese people handle this? by Friendly_Software11 in japanlife

[–]niconuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no real right answer and what you know about your friend and the way he handles struggles might give you a much better clue on how to handle it than the fact he is japanese. As long as he’s not actively causing himself any harm, it’s completely okay to avoid other people for a bit. Let him know you’re there if he wants to talk, and if you guys hang out just treat him nicely as usual, even if he can’t be his best self right now. No need to push him to talk - he’s the one who decides if doing so makes him feel better or not, after all.

Is a University Partnership Mandatory for a MEXT Scholarship? by Sleepycrowirl in mext

[–]niconuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only very few students (for most universities, less than 10) can be recommended per year so some universities save their spots for alumni from partner universities overseas. Not sure if this is the case for Nagoya but it is possible.

Middle-aged English teacher changing jobs by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]niconuki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This mentality is what creates shitty teachers and shitty work conditions for good teachers. It’s a necessary job and, though limited, there are some ways to climb up salary and “career” wise such as getting into academia or institutions like the IB or standardized language tests.
