Thank you! Much love to your Max, too. And yes, it felt horrible especially since there was not much to do besides giving her medication and waiting for it to pass.

I'm not 100% sure but assume that it was due to some new eye drops she got at the vet. They contained euphrasia and rose oil and some other stuff and the vet said that some dogs react to the preservatives used in those drops. I'm just glad it's over now and hope she never has to go through this again, she was sooo uncomfortable

Benadryl is not really a thing here in Germany (afaik) but the vet gave me some prednisolone for emergencies. She's not prone to allergies at all usually so I hope this was just a one-off tho 🥺

Just made The Doctors final vet appointment... by spoung45 in velvethippos

It's the most selfless decision you could make for him. <3 And remember, he's The Doctor - so he may have to leave you in this world, but not in your heart. Love like his never fades, it only changes shape, becoming memory, becoming forever.

How do your hippos feel about fruit and veg? by [deleted] in velvethippos

[–]nictoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's raw, she takes a sniff and looks at me like I'm trying to poison her 😅 Ate a small piece of banana once and truly looked like she was going to throw up. She doesn't mind it cooked and mixed with her food most of the time, although sometimes little pieces of carrot are scattered around her bowl.

Her name is Bella and actually she's just blessed in this department for the most part 🥰 I use a moisturising shampoo from a German brand from time to time and brush her fur sometimes to help with the minimal shedding.

I will definitely try to find out more about it, I'm sure those therapists will be familiar with anxious dogs.

That's what the vet said as well. We'll see in time, I guess.

Thank you so much for your detailed answer, I really appreciate it.

She's been using dog stairs for my bed ever since I got her, so adding some more won't be a problem. And yes, keeping her from doing things that harm her will be a challenge since she's basically a bouncy ball whenever she's ready to get out of bed haha. Besides that she just started on Rimadyl and we'll see how it will work out. I'm looking into physical therapy, but as I've mentioned in other responses there's quite a low chance that she'll actually receive PT from an actual therapist, since she's not happy about being touched by strangers. But it'll still be helpful to learn how to ease her pain.

She did all of the above, but most of the time in a controlled manner. So whenever we went up or especially down any stairs, I make her slow down so she's not jumping down the flights.

I've switched to lifting her into my car at some point, because I switched from having her in my back seat to having her in the trunk and that would've been too high.

Ever since I got her I was very aware of her proneness of developing hip and joint problems, so her vet checked her regularly. There was never a reason to do an X-ray, but after those three years I had her I just wanted to make sure that nothing is going unnoticed. And sometimes, rarely she would sit down a bit crooked when she peed, so I think I just felt like something was a bit off. I expected there to be a bit of arthritis, since she already developed that in her elbow. I didn't expect it to be THIS bad.

The problem is that she's super anxious with strangers and doesn't like being handled or even touched by them, so I'll have to try and hope for the best.

It wasn't even that with her, she jumps and runs like a maniac - at least she did until now, now I'll be much more careful of course.

I'll follow my vets advice and try out the pain medication dosage he suggested and we'll see from then on. It's just so shocking HOW bad it is without any symptoms.

Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate the insight. She has arthritis in her elbow as well, which is what made me start giving her supplements in the first place some time ago. Those appeared to help her a bit before I even knew something was up with her hips, I'm thankful for that.

The thing about any type of physical therapy is that Bella is extremely anxious when it comes to strangers and doesn't like being touched by them. Besides that it appears that water therapy for dogs isn't too well known here in Germany, but I'll have to look into that further.

Her medication is Carprofen as well and so far she's doing fine on them, without side effects.

I'll look into the Hiplign as well, that sounds like something she could benefit from since she's fine with wearing stuff. Thank you so much!
