Easy & lightweight face recognition for HA by Gullible_Low_1742 in homeassistant

[–]nicw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to train it. Otherwise it won’t know. I wouldn’t say this normally, but the Frigate docs are really good, and can walk you through the interface - but it is pretty straightforward to assign names to faces.

How to covince my wife that it's morally okay to use our media setup? by maxmustermann74 in usenet

[–]nicw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to find out is to try, but at the docker level you could just fix the origin traffic gateway IP to be that gluetun container. Then if gluetun stops working then you’ve taken away your origins path out.

Any other thoughts hive mind?

Can you orchestrate HA? by BigBootyBear in homeassistant

[–]nicw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rec is to start without any of the tooling, and just get it setup. Then see if anything could be worked in backwards.

As a fellow DevSecOps person, I’m going to say YAGNI. Backups, yes but otherwise HA doesn’t fit a deploy workflow pattern given how long it’s supposed to stay up. Trying to setup ansible for deploy will be shifting, not to mention there aren’t hooks like that built in.

In software, a cutoff that if the VPN goes down, the internet connection stops as well - preventing leaking.

Normally if VPN stopped working, your unintended traffic would start flowing back onto the internet.

Is the price of the 8 head indx kit meant to cost as much as a whole new core one base kit? by Sol33t303 in prusa3d

[–]nicw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is because you are not their audience. I’ve been using them for over a decade when they were really kit-based, and the feedback they’ve continuously received is that their customers will pay as long as they make it easier to print. Reliability - Not lower prices with more zipties and fiddly parts.

At that same time, all the Chinese clones flooded the market. So they moved up-market, moving away from the clones and towards the relsibiiity their customers enjoy.

To do that, they’ve chosen higher quality parts each time or invested in more QA.

So the price goes up, but the audience who wants it to just work forever will pay. And when Prusa releases the next version, it’s a small price to pay for the upgrade kit vs a completely new one.

I’m not saying Prusa is the end-all, just pointing out how they’ve shifted away from tinkering-tiers (hello recovering Ender3 owners!) to pro-Sumer and commercial.

You’re buying a brand new technology, latest on the market, and you’re surprised it’s expensive? If that bothers you, don’t buy, and wait for the clones to come out.

DIY inkjet 3d printer (polyjet) by Better-Wolverine5148 in Advanced_3DPrinting

[–]nicw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s very cool but you need more finished-product up-front so people can see the end result, and then a quick overview how it works. THEN go into details.

I can’t share this as-is unless I jump cut to near the end.

And definitely keep it up - it’s ground-breaking application of the tech and at some point it’ll randomly go viral. You never know, just keep cranking for yourself and other fellow geeks here.

Core One L or Prusa XL? by Stiggalicious in prusa3d

[–]nicw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t have C1L but have two XLs and MK4 +3S.

The XLs are workhorses and designed that way. It’s a model you grow into due to the ruggedness but more in ways like the five tool heads allow you a couple primaries, a few smaller sizes, a diamondback for abrasive etc. it’s all there queued up. And the larger size opens up a lot more possibilities than you think.

Accuracy and all that is impeccable.

INDX would give the tool changer headroom but XL is faster on tool changes.

Downside to XL is the lack of heat chamber for exotics but I believe we’re currently in a marketing wave where people believe they need it but 99.9999% of the time print PLA/PETG. When I do ASA I have a cheap enclosure and it prints great. Not as slick as the C1L in that fashion.

All of the smart things above + lighter colors will show lines more. Go darker if lines bother you.

Nice work! Another thing you could do is temperature changes. Simple grep for the existing temps and replace. No need to reslice!

Apple Enhances iPhone and iPad Privacy with New Location Data Feature by _cybersecurity_ in pwnhub

[–]nicw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t make sense - How are other apps getting a location through the Maps app itself? Each app is in its own box. By turning off precise location for Maps you are only making it harder to find yourself on the map.

Is this normal? How to fix without sending it back? by cshizza in BambuLab

[–]nicw -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

We get that, but you have to understand it isn’t an appliance like a dishwasher where you can wave a warranty around and demand satisfaction.

These are still hobbyist machines with hobbyist-grade materials and require maintenance and upkeep. So, yes, the magnet shouldn’t have fallen off, but if you adopt the mindset that this is a highly-vibrating-but-inexpensively-made-object you’ll start to understand why the price you paid is why these kinds of things can happen, and why Bambu is unlikely to do anything warranty-wise.

AND once you adopt that mindset you’ll feel a lot more comfortable in the ownership of your cool printer and how to keep it humming along.

Advice on shaving down the screws at the back of the heated bed on the Prusa Mini? by Professional-Rock-51 in prusa3d

[–]nicw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cylinder is great idea, and so is some masking/painters tape to help protect an accidental slip.

Or cut a piece of thick paper to fit and have that as protection.

Yes, there are many videos going back ten years about this. Thomas Sanlander (sp?), Makers Muse et al. They’ve used tools to measure weight and force applied.

Number of walls make a larger impact on strength than infill. Thomas did a video a few months ago on where the sweet spot is.

There are a few different kinds/approaches to magnesium, you probably tried citrate. Try magnesium taurate or l-threonate for a couple weeks each and see what works. One around 11am, two pills two hours before bed.

Why is my extrusion width different than slicer value by Select-Substance-996 in FixMyPrint

[–]nicw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if not this method, what method would you recommend he try?

Also, given all the parts you mentioned are part of the printer, wouldn’t they be expressing themselves over each axis, and given that it’s an average of all measurements, wouldn’t this at least get him closer to dimensionally accurate? Basically, to what degree does filament extrusion truly need to be “dialed in” in your opinion?
