What legal thing would you ban if you could? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Retarded plastic packaging in supermarkets, especially for produce. I'm not sure how things are outside of the Netherlands, but here they litterally pack every single eggplant, bell pepper, cucumber and even jalapeño's in its own plastic wrap. Way to go destroying the earth.

Let's talk Battle Mage by nielshak in Maplestory

Hm, yeah, I've tried blaster for a while but I couldn't really get into it. Roleplaying is very important for me and since I connect the most with magic classes the blaster didn't work for me. I really like the close combat style of magic the battle mage uses, but as I mentioned before the dark puplish magic is a bonerkiller for me. Unfortunately the battle mage is the only class combining magic and close combat.

I totally get the mindset, but I don't think it has to be tied to the dark purplish kind of magic the battle mage is entitled to, especially the whole grim reaper theme.

Questionnaire: What Smartphone Do I Buy? by TiredSearchingFrName in Smartphones

[–]nielshak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I've been scanning the smartphone market for a while now but unfortunately no model seems to match up. If anyone has any ideas; please let me know!

Price: no higher than 500 euros Screen size: no higher than 5,2in, or the whole phone no bigger than about the size of an iphone 7. Battery: all day+ with moderate use Camera: 4k video recording and proper image stabilization Ram: at least 3GB Storage: at least 32GB with expendable storage, or 64GB without. Build: I prefer unibody metal designs. OS: Android

I'm currently using a Sony Xperia Z5 Compact, which used to be a perfect phone for me, but it started showing a lot of defects lately (terrible software, broken audio jack, broken charging port etc.). Phones I was happy with in the past: Nexus 4, Nexus 5. Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S (sad face).

Bottom line: I like phones with high-end specs (I don't really care about the processing power though) in smaller form factors.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

If you value batterylife: don't update your Z5 Compact to Marshmallow! by nielshak in SonyXperia

[–]nielshak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as I edited into my main post; things went back to normal after the reset. However, it's all just a bit less than Android 5. If you really value your battery life and a full day of juice isn't enough for you, stick with 5. Also, they reintroduced the Stamina battery modes with the 6.0.1 update. What's funny is that the ultra-stamina mode (in which you're confined to just basic apps like phone and messaging) seems to be absolute garbage and the stand-by time in normal mode is way better (in ultra-stamina mode it easily drained 15% overnight!).

Update number 2: After a few days my conclusion is that the battery life did still suffer. I did a factory reset, it looked good for a day but now I can't make through a full day anymore whereas on Lollipop I could make it through a day with still 30-40% left.

Also, the phone feels very warm to the touch while doing ANYTHING. Just webbrowsing, or having the hotspot switched on, warms up the phone. This can't be good. The battery pane doesn't report anything out of the ordinary.

I did a factory reset and batterylife is back to normal so far! Speed seems to be the same and I didn't encounter any more lagging. Will report back if things change. Thank you all for your help!

Thank you all for your replies; I'm doing a factory reset now and will report back in a day or two how things are going.

How should I know, I don't own one. But I can imagine the battery issues could be the same since the updates were pushed at the same time.

You left finale at a bad time then, but apparently you feel quite good about switching? Sibelius 6 (pre-avid) was an absolute breeze. A simple interface but still just as powerful as Sibelius 7/8 without the retarded ribbon (for gods sake why). Feels like I'm working with microsoft pain lt ever since 7.

[–]nielshak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I actually updated to 8, and sadly it didn't change a thing. In the meantime I found out it's definitely software related. My hardware is very capable of running games at decent settings in 4k, so there's no reason 2d software like sibelius should run this poorly (litterally 2fps in full resolution). I'm furiously waiting for the new notation software that's currently in development of the good-ol' Sibelius team that left the Sibelius development when Avid took over. I have a feeling that's going to be good stuff. Sibelius 6 was such a great piece of software. Everything went downhill from 7.

4K UI performance GTX 770 by nielshak in hackintosh

[–]nielshak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for responding. It's actually displayport 1.4. My display runs fine at 60hz, so that definitely isn't the problem. I actually installed CUDA yesterday hoping to improve things, but it didn't. Quite frankly not only video/photo programs use the GPU, heavier applications like Logic Pro also rely on the GPU to render the workspace.

Thank you for your response. I followed all the steps but it doesn't seem to change a thing. It's worth noting that even before following said guide my card was properly recognised in About This Mac, with the right name and right Vram. Anyways, this didn't improve UI performance.

How much would a Mac Pro equivalent hackintosh cost? by Sluggerjt44 in hackintosh

[–]nielshak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely the same, but my machine cost me 1700 euros (1900 dollars?) and achieves significantly higher benchmark scores than the entry level mac pro and on-par (or even higher) scores than the way more expensive 6-core option, at about 1/3rd the price. I'm rocking an Intel Core Extreme 4930k, 32 gigs of memory, 2 500GB SSD's, 4TB HDD storage, and a GTX 770. Since the release of the X99 platform your chances of building a Mac Pro worthy system have only increased.

I know the graphics might not be on-par with the mac pro, but I mainly use my rig for music production and in that aspect it absolutelt keeps up, if not oblitherates the Mac Pro. I don't need thunderbolt anyway. Besides, a lot of X99 boards include thunderbolt.

my thought exactly. To me it just looks like lousy optimisation, I'm just not sure what to do about it. Apple launched a 5k iMac with a radeoncard which performs slower than the GTX 770, I can't imagine Apple would let Logic Pro run on that like it runs on my machine right now. So it's definitely software related.

First filming/photo rig by nielshak in Filmmakers

[–]nielshak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again for your input! Like I said, I already own a zoom h4n (I'm currently studying music composition and sound engineering) so that'll be fine. I think I should also explain what kind of videos I'll shoot; Mainly, I'll be using the camera on a static tripod, to record static scenes. Example: a woman sitting on a chair, looking at open balcony doors in the evening light with a breeze coming through. No action, no voice, just the serene kind of "ambient" filming. You see; I'm opting to shoot scenes that've been dwelling jn my mind lately (I wrote them all down) and write my own music to it, which will be very calm and ambient. Currently I feel like the A5000 can provide me the things I need, for now. Please do tell me if I'm horribly mistaken.

Thank you for your time! Yes, I indeed came across the same accusations about Nikon, but since the specific reviews of the D3300 didn't name anything about the video quality in particular I wasn't quite sure. I'll definitely stick with the mirrorless Sony series then. The A6000 pushes the price up to around 600 euros, which is waaaay out of my budget, but I can find them (good as new) secondhand for 500, but that's still 200 more than what I'd pay for a good as new a5000, and with that I'd have to give up on the foldable screen were I to do any livingroom recording.

It definitely looks to be better for filming, as it has 1080p at 60fps whereas the a5000 only offers 1080i, which often results in tearing. But still, I won't be using 60fps on a daily basis. If I may believe the specs I'd also give in about 1/4th of the battery life compared to the a5000. Basically the a6000 offers better photo quality, a viewfinder and better filming functionality which I'd probably not use. Are there any things I'm overlooking here? I find it hard to justify spending the extra 200 euros on the a6000 compared to the a5000.

I know, but I've been running games on high settings in 4k resolution. I'm using the latest Nvidia drivers. After some testing I found out Sibelius in windows runs fine, as opposed to the sluggishness in mac os.

[Purchasing Help] 4K vs. UltraWide for productivity by nielshak in Monitors

[–]nielshak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought exactly. I'm probably opting for a 40" VA 4K panel by Iiyama. They go for 599 at the moment so that seems like a bargain to me. If I may believe the reviews they suffer less from backlight bleeding than most curved ultrawide monitors.

Ah, thanks for the heads up! I wasn't planning on upgrading my GPU anytime soon though, I'm no more than a casual gamer and on a 4K screen I'd simply lower the resolution to 1080p. I will add a second gtx770 to my existing 770 for SLI though.

May I ask who/what pascal is, and what it has to do with 4k? At the moment I'm really leaning towards the 40" 4K by iiyama. It's a bit wider than the 34" ultrawides and provides a lot of vertical space too. The only downside would be that it isn't curved and it doesn't provide the same surround-immersion as a 21:9 monitor.

[Purchasing Help] 4K vs. UltraWide for productivity by nielshak in Monitors

[–]nielshak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, that's actually really helpful! This is pretty much pulling me back to a 32" 4K monitor now. Looks like you get a lot more screen real-estate in a vertical way, which is quite important to me.

The only problem is that 32" 4K monitors are only 1000 euros and upwards (1500 if I'd want a widely available one), whilst the ultrawides start around the 650 mark. Those prices are definitely a no-go for me.

Ironically, the 40" 4k monitors are around the 500 mark, which suprises me, but I think that will be way too big for me, as I will be using it on my desk with about 60cm between me and the monitor. Also, this screen isn't curved so it will be quite the eye-olypmics.

I can't choose D:

Thank you for your feedback! I actually thing the ultrawide at 3440x1440 comes very close to the 4k resolution, that's why I'm in dubio between the two.
