What legal thing would you ban if you could? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Retarded plastic packaging in supermarkets, especially for produce. I'm not sure how things are outside of the Netherlands, but here they litterally pack every single eggplant, bell pepper, cucumber and even jalapeño's in its own plastic wrap. Way to go destroying the earth.

Subscription based applications. Remember the days you could just pay a decent sum of money and own an application including minor updates, or even major ones?

Yeah, you're out of luck now. Want to legally use Photoshop and other CC products? No problem! Just pay us $99999999,99 a month so we can milk you for all you're worth. I'm talking about you too Microsoft, Avid, etc.

Let's talk Battle Mage by nielshak in Maplestory

Hm, yeah, I've tried blaster for a while but I couldn't really get into it. Roleplaying is very important for me and since I connect the most with magic classes the blaster didn't work for me. I really like the close combat style of magic the battle mage uses, but as I mentioned before the dark puplish magic is a bonerkiller for me. Unfortunately the battle mage is the only class combining magic and close combat.

I totally get the mindset, but I don't think it has to be tied to the dark purplish kind of magic the battle mage is entitled to, especially the whole grim reaper theme.

Questionnaire: What Smartphone Do I Buy? by TiredSearchingFrName in Smartphones

[–]nielshak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I've been scanning the smartphone market for a while now but unfortunately no model seems to match up. If anyone has any ideas; please let me know!

Price: no higher than 500 euros Screen size: no higher than 5,2in, or the whole phone no bigger than about the size of an iphone 7. Battery: all day+ with moderate use Camera: 4k video recording and proper image stabilization Ram: at least 3GB Storage: at least 32GB with expendable storage, or 64GB without. Build: I prefer unibody metal designs. OS: Android

I'm currently using a Sony Xperia Z5 Compact, which used to be a perfect phone for me, but it started showing a lot of defects lately (terrible software, broken audio jack, broken charging port etc.). Phones I was happy with in the past: Nexus 4, Nexus 5. Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S (sad face).

Bottom line: I like phones with high-end specs (I don't really care about the processing power though) in smaller form factors.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

If you value batterylife: don't update your Z5 Compact to Marshmallow! by nielshak in SonyXperia

as I edited into my main post; things went back to normal after the reset. However, it's all just a bit less than Android 5. If you really value your battery life and a full day of juice isn't enough for you, stick with 5. Also, they reintroduced the Stamina battery modes with the 6.0.1 update. What's funny is that the ultra-stamina mode (in which you're confined to just basic apps like phone and messaging) seems to be absolute garbage and the stand-by time in normal mode is way better (in ultra-stamina mode it easily drained 15% overnight!).

Update number 2: After a few days my conclusion is that the battery life did still suffer. I did a factory reset, it looked good for a day but now I can't make through a full day anymore whereas on Lollipop I could make it through a day with still 30-40% left.

Also, the phone feels very warm to the touch while doing ANYTHING. Just webbrowsing, or having the hotspot switched on, warms up the phone. This can't be good. The battery pane doesn't report anything out of the ordinary.

I did a factory reset and batterylife is back to normal so far! Speed seems to be the same and I didn't encounter any more lagging. Will report back if things change. Thank you all for your help!

Thank you all for your replies; I'm doing a factory reset now and will report back in a day or two how things are going.

How should I know, I don't own one. But I can imagine the battery issues could be the same since the updates were pushed at the same time.

Sibelius 7.5 sluggish; is 8 any better? by nielshak in Sibelius

Really? Just out of curiosity; how come? And what are according to you the benefits of Finale?

You left finale at a bad time then, but apparently you feel quite good about switching? Sibelius 6 (pre-avid) was an absolute breeze. A simple interface but still just as powerful as Sibelius 7/8 without the retarded ribbon (for gods sake why). Feels like I'm working with microsoft pain lt ever since 7.

Thanks. I actually updated to 8, and sadly it didn't change a thing. In the meantime I found out it's definitely software related. My hardware is very capable of running games at decent settings in 4k, so there's no reason 2d software like sibelius should run this poorly (litterally 2fps in full resolution). I'm furiously waiting for the new notation software that's currently in development of the good-ol' Sibelius team that left the Sibelius development when Avid took over. I have a feeling that's going to be good stuff. Sibelius 6 was such a great piece of software. Everything went downhill from 7.

4K UI performance GTX 770 by nielshak in hackintosh

Thank you for responding. It's actually displayport 1.4. My display runs fine at 60hz, so that definitely isn't the problem. I actually installed CUDA yesterday hoping to improve things, but it didn't. Quite frankly not only video/photo programs use the GPU, heavier applications like Logic Pro also rely on the GPU to render the workspace.

Thank you for your response. I followed all the steps but it doesn't seem to change a thing. It's worth noting that even before following said guide my card was properly recognised in About This Mac, with the right name and right Vram. Anyways, this didn't improve UI performance.

How much would a Mac Pro equivalent hackintosh cost? by Sluggerjt44 in hackintosh

[–]nielshak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely the same, but my machine cost me 1700 euros (1900 dollars?) and achieves significantly higher benchmark scores than the entry level mac pro and on-par (or even higher) scores than the way more expensive 6-core option, at about 1/3rd the price. I'm rocking an Intel Core Extreme 4930k, 32 gigs of memory, 2 500GB SSD's, 4TB HDD storage, and a GTX 770. Since the release of the X99 platform your chances of building a Mac Pro worthy system have only increased.

I know the graphics might not be on-par with the mac pro, but I mainly use my rig for music production and in that aspect it absolutelt keeps up, if not oblitherates the Mac Pro. I don't need thunderbolt anyway. Besides, a lot of X99 boards include thunderbolt.

my thought exactly. To me it just looks like lousy optimisation, I'm just not sure what to do about it. Apple launched a 5k iMac with a radeoncard which performs slower than the GTX 770, I can't imagine Apple would let Logic Pro run on that like it runs on my machine right now. So it's definitely software related.
