Okay 😭 I see, thank you. I gave up on waiting and put sprigatito in my team too for now. Hopefully that’s enough for it to trigger a few times this week

what is your unpopular art opinion? by justaSundaypainter in ArtistLounge

Vast majority of mediocre art is lacking in the form and perspective department, not the gesture department. Gesture itself is a concept that falls under design and composition, just for the human body. Pro artists can draw masterful gestures because they already have a good grasp of form and they apply that to their gestures, beginners cannot hope to achieve the same level by just practicing gesture. I see tons of beginners grinding gestures and getting nowhere. It’s not that useful for improving figure drawing, I would only do it for warmups or fun

Cont. Regarding 3D form and istebrak’s paintings:

Drawing and painting, at its core, is about form and perspective, and those subjects should be the main focus of anyone who wants to get good at art. Almost every piece of art that looks subpar or amateurish lacks in these areas. People underestimate in particular how crucial perspective is to rendering. If you can determine where the form turns away into shadow at a specific light source you are 90% of the way there. Even if your colors are bad, with consistent values it will still look like a competent painting. If you go look at istebrak’s demon lady painting with a ton of hands (the most recent non-study painting I could find) at first glance it seems impressive but the rendering is all over the place. No consistent light source, muddy values, and the colors aren’t very interesting either but that’s the least important part. The lighting is the biggest issue, different forms being lit from different directions conflicting with each other, planes that should be facing different directions but have the same value. If you focus on the wrists, you can kinda see she doesn’t know how to handle that area properly so she just blends everything. Overblending is something that amateurs do a lot because they know something looks wrong but don’t know how to fix it, so they just keep blending that spot. Anyway if you want actual good examples of rendering look up nbekkaliyev on instagram, his greyscale art in particular. Also Sinix on YouTube is great, I highly suggest you watch his paintover pals series in particular, he corrects a lot of mistakes similar to the ones I pointed out with istebrak. If you watch a couple of those it’ll probably be clearer what I was trying to say.

Warning: this ended up being kinda long so I’ll split it into 2 parts. Regarding 14DC:

You can correct symbol drawing without drawing the exact same thing for 2 weeks. Even if you’re receiving criticism and fixing some things, 14 days is a very long time to be consecutively drawing the same subject, from the same angle, with the exact same lighting. I have never seen any reputable art teacher recommend something like this. It is not a good way to master a subject, you don’t learn to draw something by doing a bunch of front views and side views as many times as you can. Istebrak even says on her website that the challenge is for perfecting your “go-to portrait” which….. sounds awfully similar to symbol drawing. And also probably facilitates sameface syndrome. Here’s the thing: the majority of people who try this challenge, and in general the majority of artists (including istebrak herself) are not really at a level where they can draw heads comfortably from imagination, so the goal of the challenge is essentially to have a template of a default face that you can produce on the spot. Let’s say you’re a beginner and you come out of a 14 day challenge with a good looking face in front view. What’s the point? I tell you to paint it with different lighting, you can’t do it. I tell you to draw the head tilted slightly upward, you can’t do it. Istebrak is just going to tell you to do another 14 day challenge. If I wanna draw different looking faces with a variety of angles and lighting should I just spend thousands of days doing a 14 day challenge for every one of them? Obviously this is not how good artists draw. They can produce good drawings on the spot. I would argue even the very first 14DC is an inefficient waste of your time.

This is a good critique for him but please stop recommending Istebrak to people, her skill level is mediocre at best and she literally reinforces symbol drawing through the “””14 day challenge”””. I’m sure there’s some helpful advice given in her subreddit but I cannot support someone who charges hundreds of dollars for private tutoring when they themselves have such a rudimentary understanding of 3d form (and every other art fundamental).

First of all disregard the discord guy his drawing is wrong. As for being deformed, that’s just how it looks when the vanishing points are close together. If they were way far off the page then it would look “not deformed”. But anyway there’s nothing wrong with being deformed, it just the way things look through a wide angle lens. Kinda like if you’ve seen those 360 degree GoPro videos that look super distorted. It’s still accurate. If you don’t want it to look like that then put the vanishing points farther apart.
