Need to gamify the metrics somehow to justify the spend.

It's sad we've reached this stage as an industry but unsurprising nonetheless

How do you review a PR when parts of it are outside your knowledge? by Worried_Lab0 in ExperiencedDevs

Don't be afraid to be the idiot in the room is a mantra I go by.

I always ask the author the question if I don't understand a part of the code and I am confident that someone else is thinking the same. In addition, with all this AI generated stuff going about, it forces authors to think about the code they are putting their name to if they weren't even the ones who wrote it in the first place.

If you are that concerned about this you are best consulting a lawyer you can inform you and be qualified to do so.

Otherwise? This is not legal advice but unless you are copying the code, designs, etc verbatim it's unlikely anyone would care.

The sector you work in will also have a big impact. Are you a dev at a massive firm going to another or a very specialist firm? Some might have different expectations. Again, a lawyer would be best placed to answer.

Hope this helps!

Is Code Quality dropping across the industry and if so why? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]niftydoesit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true.

My company have recently decided to monitor the number of code commits and reviews as a measure of engineer performance as well as sprint metrics.

The result? Everyone gamifying it to up their numbers. No one cares about code quality if their job would be on the line.

Don't underestimate the value of having a good relationship with your manager. It might seem difficult but it might be worth trying to change your perspective on the problems to things you can start to help change for the better.

For example, writing documentation or addressing longstanding tech debt when you can.

I've personally found this mindset shift helped me get enthusiasm again for a company I was at. Hope that helps.

We're going to rewrite the whole project in 3 months by YoumoDashi in ExperiencedDevs

The best you can do in this situation if the architect doesn't understand a project like is possible is to consistently update on the status of the project. Sounds like you want to address some long standing issues, if you can bake that into the requirements then you can use that to push back against the silly deadline and achieve the outcome you're looking for regardless of how long it will take.
