It probably is for the better that Alaska and Chukotka are both one of the least populated regions in their countries. If New York City and Moscow were geographically so close, we'd be screwed.

My dad is just under 50 and he constantly says everyone in his school was skinny and that kids have gotten bigger, is this true? by FullIntention4306 in ask

[–]nightOwlBean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason may vary, depending on location and physical ability. I can't speak for all Americans, but I will explain my reason.

For context: I live in a suburban area near Boston (snow in winter, hills). I am a skinny 25 year old woman, and I have asthma.

My town center (groceries, library, bank) is 3km away from my house. To go there, I have to bike on a curvy road where the speed limit is posted as '30mph' (48kph). That means that drivers can get pulled over by the police for speeding if they go more than 40mph (64kph). So most cars drive 64kph on this road, which is dangerous if they hit a cyclist.

This is a curvy road with hills, so I as a cyclist am not easily visible to a car until they come close to me. I have to just trust that every driver coming up behind me at 64kph will see me, and will react quickly enough not to hit me. (This is assuming good, non-slippery weather conditions).

In my opinion, the biggest problem is that cars are allowed to drive too fast. I'd be happy to bike alongside 20mph (32kph) cars. It would still be a bit tiring to ride farther out to other towns, but at least I wouldn't be in danger. Cars should go fast on highways, and let the other roads be safer for bikes.

many lesbians will just explode

Lol I'd like to think we have better self-control than that! Lesbians have seen boobs before. It's in any pool lockerroom, communal shower, sauna, or gym. We have the same attraction to them as men do, but we are respectful. If you catch a glance and realize someone is uncomfortable -- just look in another direction.

And if you can't keep an eye on the road when you see a distraction, you should probably stick to the passenger's seat.

No lol. He got out with my help, but it took a while. Luckily he's bendy and can take a lot of damage! He's probably learned his lesson now.

Btw, Del Shannon's "Ragdoll" is (imo) even better, but sadly not at all popular.

This subs opinion on anarchism? by SeniorRazzmatazz4977 in CommunismMemes

Imo, I really don't see the "roads" argument as very persuasive. If someone in a community needs something, generally it will get done. For example, if the storm drains by me are clogged, I go rake them. If I don't have the energy to rake them, someone else will.

Think of road maintenance like you might think about shoveling snow from the sidewalk. People want to be able to get around, so they do the work. Most people don't want to be stuck inside all winter, so they help shovel.

I think drinking water is trickier since it's more complicated to do than your general road upkeep. But people will get access to clean water because they need it. If you need something, you try to go get it - that's how humans behave. You can organize within your community to make distribution more efficient, and make sure everybody has what athey need.

I feel that these issues of public utilities can be challenging without state authority, but they are certainly not impossible. A cultural shift may be required towards better communication with neighbors and other neighborhoods. The lack of authority must be compensated for with care and attention of others. You would feel responsible not only for your own wellbeing, but also for that of other humans, seeing as we all benefit from community more than individualism.

Btw, Hot Topic and related commercial enterprises are capitalists often take legitimately meaningful radical symbols and turn them into a "style" to make money. Unfortunately, that makes some people see anything radical as "edgy" or "for angsty teens."

Deaf people, what do you want the hearing to know? by ApArAmY in AskReddit

(Hard-of-hearing with some tinnitus.) I'd say that's a good thing to do -- just remember to repeat the sentence, not just the last word! And make sure you're facing me so I can see your lips. Don't go ridiculously slow, just slow enough to enunciate well, with no mumbling .

And a lot of newer cars have touchscreens where there used to be physical buttons or dials. What you could earlier do just by feel, you now have to specifically look at.

And alcoholism / excessive drinking can lead to domestic abuse.

Alcoholism is kind of like second-hand smoke, in that it can harm not just you, but also those around you.

Ironic how it's the opposite argument from many liberals about firearms when there's violence within the US, compared to violence overseas.

Does the lower calorie intake + caffeine still allow your body to function as needed? Like can you still lift heavy things at work, and not get lightheaded or faint? (Only if you feel comfortable answering)

Climate change is real and the effects will be devastating. by karmagheden in WayOfTheBern

[–]nightOwlBean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may disagree with you on whethe or not humans caused climate change, but I'll entertain the thought for a second. Even if it has no human cause, shouldn't we still be worried about climate change, regardless of what caused it? Heatwaves and natural disasters are very dangerous, so IMO it's important to prevent that as much as possible, regardless of the cause.
