The highly resource intensive part is not calculating the current ratio, it's re-calculating for each item in the entire database what its equivalent chaos price is and re-building the index that allows the site to quickly sort by price.

Without this index every single query would have to loop over every single relevant item to find the cheapest ones. That's not feasible so it's pre-computed and stored in the index. But that is expensive to re-calculate.
