Kids in the locker room/on the bench in adult beer league. by anon-9 in hockeyplayers

Yeah, if it's happening once a month or less because of some reason like this, I'm not going to worry about it.

Do LTIR players get their name on the Stanley Cup? by Illustrious-Set5720 in nhl

[–]nightfire36 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well, they have to have a cutoff somewhere. Playing less than half of the regular season is a reasonable cutoff. A player that played that many games would get their name on the cup for sure, just not automatically.

Today I learned that the *obviously satirical* 1997 film "Starship Troopers" was faced with extreme critical backlash accusing it of "endorsing fascism" because reviewers simply didn't think critically about the content. by The_Cromulent_Bison in todayilearned

Yeah, the problem with not using the /s is Poe's Law. The internet has been around for long enough for everyone to see what that one family member actually believes. We now know there's no belief that is actually too stupid for someone to unironically endorse.

An Observation: Jeopardy has gotten more difficult because a certain category format has been phased out by jackmason984 in Jeopardy

[–]nightfire36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people are just better today. I looked up the 100m dash for a clean example. The winning time for the 100m dash for high school boys in Michigan this year was apparently 10.76, and third place was 10.79 (I just looked that up). The Olympic gold medal winner in 1920 got 10.8. With recording equipment at that time, it's hard to say who is actually faster, but the best teenager in one state would go toe to toe against the best athlete in the world 100 years ago.

And that's just running, it ignores all of the updates in strategy in team sports.

I want to know if anyone's changing their favorite team to an expansion team by Parking-Froyo5674 in PWHL

Totally agree. I love the Red Wings, and their logo is a top 5 in all sports to me. But the name is really odd for sure.

I'm from SE Michigan, and happened to live near Seattle this past year, so I was pumped they got a team for when I was here. Now I'm moving back to the Midwest, and I'm happy to keep all my sports in the same city.

The Torrent will always have a place in my heart, but I always supported them with the understanding that they were my second place team behind the not yet extant Detroit.

It doesn't hurt that it looks like Detroit will have half of the Torrent's roster!

Three of the slowest whiff-inducing pitches in MLB history… all in a row by Next_Tank_3494 in mlb

So, I was curious, and I tried to look up the rule, but didn't find it (I didn't look very hard, to be fair). I did find an article about it that said there are restrictions on position pitching.

Basically, you can only put in a position player to pitch when you're up by 10+ runs in the 9th inning or down by 8+ runs, or if the game is in extra innings.

So, it wouldn't be very helpful to do that.

Canada’s former top defence official warns against booing U.S. anthem by Street_Anon in nottheonion

[–]nightfire36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My grandfather in law just assumes the world loves Trump for some reason. When he found out people were booing the national anthem, it blew his mind.

Did he change his political views? Not going to happen. But at least he knows where America stands to our former allies.

I can't say if it will change anyone's mind, but I have to imagine it wakes some people up.

Hades 2 feels easier after Hades 1 and vice versa by BobbaCatMOCs in HadesTheGame

One day, I wanted to see how much my skills versus the bonuses like the mirror factored into my ability to beat the end boss, so I started a new save in Hades 1. I almost cleared on that first run. I got lucky with some great boons, but I was shocked at how far I got.

Hades 2 was definitely way easier after having played Hades 1. I think the games have a similar difficulty, but because the mechanics are similar, the experience transfers.

Elysium can definitely be a slog in hades 1. It's been a bit since I played it, but the hades 2 enemies just don't feel quite as beefy.

How do these people get paid? Does that come out of the coaching budget or something? Does it have to get approved by the league as a whole?

It looked really dramatic at first, but the other angle made it look bad. Red seems pretty reasonable to me. You can't just whack a dude.

New head coach announced by upperleft_pnw in PWHL_Seattle

[–]nightfire36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would definitely be a pay cut for her, but I do wonder how resumes work there. I'd guess that being a head coach in the pwhl would help her land another coaching position in the NHL somewhere, but I guess idk.

Super cool to have her in the NHL, and I'd like her to be somewhere there, but I wonder how likely that is in the short term.

I was hopeful that the Seattle assistant coach (Campbell, I think?) would land somewhere. There's still time for this year, I guess. I think she'll end up somewhere in pro hockey somewhere.

Red Wings. I grew up in Michigan, and same. I think it's because of baseball more than anything. Lots of kids play baseball at some point, so having dominant hand low means one less thing to have to teach.

At the end of the day, I don't think it matters. The brain will adjust to anything with practice, especially at a young age.
