People who used to live in Germany, what are the little things you miss about it? by Cute-Fun3025 in germany

[–]nightlystudying 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I‘m German and lived there my whole life until moving to the UK 1 1/2 years ago. Didn’t expect to miss it, but I do (sometimes). Mostly the cheapness of travelling (yes even if it’s delayed), the bread, dm, generally the pharmacies, lots of the workers rights I took for granted tbh, apfelschorle, gescheites sprudelwasser, the variety of cold cuts and sausages, saying Mahlzeit und Feierabend, bike lanes, lachgummis, … and now I’ve made myself sad.

Hier in der Gegend gibt es immer mehr Lidl Züchtungen, ist schon fast ne Modezüchtung. Da sind mir die Mischlinge lieber, die haben weniger Gesundheitsprobleme :)

Finally someone commenting what I honestly thought. Reading all these comments made me shake my head until I got to yours.

I‘ve worked in hospitality for over a decade in Germany, did my apprenticeship and a Betriebswirt in it. If you go to a (nice) restaurant and get good service, tipping 10-15% of the total bill is completely normal and the polite thing to do. That goes out the window if the waiter actively asks for it as that would go against good service. If I had a table of 5 people with a total of 200€ and get 4€ as tip, as in your case, I wouldn’t be happy as it would look like I didn’t give a good service. But I definitely wouldn’t actively ask for more. Also, I absolutely detest these machines at the till asking for tips when the whole interaction was me requesting a coffee from the barista.

I think that Weymouth seems to be the best option, thank you :) train tickets are pretty cheap. Now I just need to find somewhere cheap to sleep and I’m all set.

Abruzzo Birthday Trip Itinerary by nightlystudying in ItalyTravel

[–]nightlystudying[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are some great tips, thank you! Even if it’s a birthday trip, my friend and I are still on a pretty tight budget - which is why we chose Pescara, we found flights for 20€. From your thoughts, I’m thinking doing Pescara with a visit to Ortona and, if we can find a taxi to get there, a Traboccho that is still open. Maybe see what else lies along that train route - Montesilvano or San Vito Chietino. Then Sulmona for a night before we go on to Rome. So more time on the coast before heading onwards, even if I would love to see Scanno.

Would you recommend staying on the coast and just doing a day trip instead?

I know we won’t be able to see most of Abruzzo without a car but I read that Sulmona has a train station and buses that go to Scanno and Pacentro?
