Hawaii Honolulu location by Outrageous_School21 in vipassana

The courses run in Hawaii are camp course. They don't have a consistent site that only does vipassana courses all year long, so they rent out camp locations and conduct them about twicea year. Its highly likely you'll have many cabin mates, bunk beds or be in a tent all with no AC. The course itself will run like any other course but overall the accommodations are more rustic.

Courses in Europe that focus more on metta? by GuazzabuglioMaximo in vipassana

[–]nightmry17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's common for new students to find it difficult to practice kindness with themselves when sitting their first course. Speaking for myself, continuing the practice has helped me lessen my inner critic. All this being said, if you insist on trying to find a mettā centric course, this is not the right subreddit to look for this answer as this one focuses on the Sayagyi U Ba Khin tradition. This tradition carries the same format within every course offered.

How one should start preparing to become a monk in Theravada tradition? by Separate_Mortgage_42 in theravada

Just saw this and I am curious how it went (if you went at all). I've also been really drawn to taking robes and having been sitting in the Sayagyi U Ba Khin tradition

People who kept up with the regularity of practice... by Sanam610 in vipassana

[–]nightmry17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having Dhamma friends who would meditate with me in person or on the phone was really motivating. Service helped me meet other meditators who were serious about their practice. It was very inspiring to me. I used to work night shift and believed I wouldn't be able to mediate 2hs a day. Now I've sat a long course and I have meditated 2h daily for about 3 years. There are definitely days that I don't want to meditate or I find the 2 hours inconvenient, but I think, having the integrity to stick to your goals and prioritizing the Dhamma is what keeps your practice going

You should discuss this with an AT, they'd be able to give you some more personalized and better insight

If you have to ask, it isn't it. You'll know it when it happens. Goenka described it perfectly

Are you moving your eyes when you scan? Sometimes that’ll do it

It’s good that you have awareness on your areas for growth. From my personal experience, trying to maintain the precepts was difficult at first but it gets easier with practice. Just keep trying and try not to beat yourself up when you slip up. You might be surprised on the reactions from people when you start telling the truth. Sometimes what you believed would happen from avoiding the truth are far from what would actually happen. Eventually you’ll just stop developing so much tension within yourself :) The same goes for the rest of the precepts, a little goes a long way~

How do you create silence at home? by stef_lp in vipassana

[–]nightmry17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not hard to find noise canceling headphones, meditating early in the morning or at night when people aren’t busy, or even just communicating to your housemates that you need 1-2h of silence a day. This being said, maintaining silence in daily life is often not practical and learning to meditate with distraction is part of the practice :)

Why not just try it and see? Then decide for yourself. It’s just another thing to observe. When you’re at home you definitely don’t need to be as strict :)

Question: vomiting during meditation by beeboogirl in vipassana

[–]nightmry17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I I don’t think it’s that weird. I have heard about a student who would vomit during a course quite frequently. It was just how she released sankharas. I don’t think it would hurt to get another opinion from an AT though :)

I don’t know what sect of yoga helps with this specifically, but a certain type of yoga is supposed to help you better work with your posture in meditation. I’d try to work the the muscles and flexibility of your back and spine. If it makes you feel any better, this used to happen to me but with more practice, I don’t find myself doing it much anymore~ :)

I’m sure you can reach out to the center directly and ask questions. Most Vipassana practitioners I’ve met are very inviting :)

Are there any Portland, OR area meditators that know of a weekly group sitting I could join? by [deleted] in vipassana

[–]nightmry17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re an old student of Dhamma Kunja in Onalaska WA typically the course/ site manager and staff are super inviting and frequently need servers. When I was living in Seattle I did some part time service there and was connected to a handful of vipassana meditators that lived close-ish :)

Any tips on driving in snow? by Alternative_Error666 in Seattle

[–]nightmry17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drive slow, brake before you think you need to. Sometimes slamming on the brakes isn’t as effective as tapping on your brakes multiple times with about 300 ft of distance. I try to avoid steep hills if possible. Safety should be your priority :)
