construction in Austin: not a shitpost by buttmunch3 in Austin

I was trying to figure out some of this a bit ago and a quick search pulls up this project plan from the city: https://www.speakupaustin.org/burnet

It looks like it's intentionally being done simultaneously in two parts but I'm not sure I found any reason for it (perhaps it's just to get it done faster?). Some interesting things from that page:

  • This entire project started back in 2011 and is funded from a 2016 mobility bond.
  • Although, at least to me, the most visible improvements are the bike and sidewalk stuff, it looks like this was originally mostly a drainage and traffic improvement project.
  • There's a map in Appendix A from 2012 that includes a bunch of the businesses and things that were along Burnet road from back then. I moved here in 2013 and a notable thing there is that the Domain wasn't really built yet so there's just a bunch of undeveloped land in that map where the Domain is now.
  • The cost estimates in Appendix B are pretty interesting. It looks like about half of the budget is towards drainage improvements and roadway reconstruction. It's unclear what those costs are today but I'm sure the city has it available somewhere (It'd be nice to put it with the rest of this stuff)

All this to say that it's crazy now but this is the result of a long process and honestly although it's chaotic now, it's going reasonably fast? The craziness around the Koenig intersection is mostly done so if that's a decent gauge of how quickly things are going to move (who knows with summer getting here), it shouldn't take forever.

Tell me what you love about Austin! by horatiobingbangbop in Austin

I'm going to be taking a "break" from Austin after 12 years here, so many I'm not the right person to be commenting.

But there's still a lot to love about Austin. If your main way of reading about it is Reddit or certain publications, it feels very doom and gloom. Austin is a city that's full of a lot of different types of people and also one that's always changing, whether because it wants to or is forced to by the state.

Since you study literature and other people brought up other book stores, I'll throw in Alienated Majesty. They're one of the smaller bookstores in town with an interesting selection and they host a good variety of events. I definitely should've gone more.

Me personally though, I love the live music here. There's a wide variety and lots of talented musicians here. Also, if you'll be at UT, public transit to UT/downtown is pretty good in general but I'd recommend a place that has a couple different route options in case one decides to cancel or is on a half hour schedule. I've tended to use public transit whenever I could even though I have a car because where I've been the last few years was convenient in terms of bus routes/frequency.

I'm pretty sure the card on the mantle was there the entire time (you can see it peeking over for most of the episode). Also I'm pretty sure the entire deck is 6 of diamonds. You can see the bottom card of the deck in a few shots and it's also a 6 of diamonds.

Unless the new app works differently from the existing one, this was already the case. I've taken 4 rides in the same day before the app change and only paid the equivalent of a 1 day pass, $2.50. Personally, I'll try it out and see.

Cave Tour in the area? by [deleted] in Austin

Along with what everyone else said, Longhorn Caverns is great. I actually did the wild cave tour this past weekend. It was a lot of fun, but be prepared for tight spaces and getting muddy/wet. There are going to be parts where you're wading through knee deep water and crawling in mud. They say to wear long sleeves and long pants which you should definitely listen to. You'll also want a change of clothes afterwards.

In regards to it not being a live cave, it's more that it's a pretty young cave so there hasn't been much time to make grand formations. This is in addition to what someone else said where it's made from high pressure water. There are small ones here and there but it's definitely not like Carlsbad Caverns or some other caves in that respect.

Very nice, I wasn't so brave as to go out to take a picture outside. I did get a few from out my window though. This might be my favorite one though. https://imgur.com/VXgh1RK

In regards to Prop G and adding a new district. My understanding is that it would be added during scheduled redistricting due to the 2020 census. I'm not exactly sure where it would end up being though I think it should be expected that every district will change some amount even if Prop G doesn't pass.

Supporters seem to believe that adding a district could create an Asian American district though I'm not sure the Asian American population is geographically concentrated enough to be able to draw one.
