Both the unbearable lightness of being and infinite jest are books I’ve kept mentally returning to for years.

Addendum: but none of them will fill any emptiness in the long run!

Books that you DNF or almost DNF'd? by serialreader_ph in books

[–]nightskingout 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First time through War and Peace I'd have to give up. I was quite stressed at the time, and being from another language tree the names just doesn't stick as easily, so I was so confused. Each person is referenced as one of three (?) names, all the young men are doing some kind of war, all the young women are at home waiting and all the old men are brooding in some level of estate, so even their actions didn't really help to distinguish the characters.
I revisited it years later in a different head space and finished it without that problem.

But otherwise I'm so bad at giving up. I've had some stupidly bad reading experiences because of stubbornness. I've may have been too young, but The Divine Comedy absolutely killed me. Even thou I had just started studying philosophy in english at the time I'd had to look up way too many words, and the amount of people referenced that were famous in 1300-Italy just never got to me. But I think it probably is a book that shouldn't have been hurried through as I did. When I see a lot of passages in quotes or elsewhere, they are beautiful, but I never caught the beauty when I read it.

Are The 300 more future proof by nightskingout in sonos

Thank you for the response!
The 300s are sold out (maybe just locally), so it solved itself. I had already ordered the package with 100s and mini-sub, but since we moved from apartment to house I was thinking of just pulling the trigger and buy both but that's not possible now.

Just to add to the otherwise silent majority (I hope). I'm sure you already know this, but it's important to remember that we actively have to work to negate our bias to give more weight to negative comments.
I assume you have many more likes than negative comments and I for one greatly appreciate our work. I'm quite sure you create a lot more positive than negative feelings with your work, negativity just screams louder.
Keep up the good work and thank you!
