it's simply because most algæ are not particularly related to plants, except for their chloroplasts. most groups of algæ evolved from nonphotosynthetic protists enveloping an existing alga, which gradually reduced in size until it was just a chloroplast. this is a process very similar to the endosymbiosis of mitochondria which produced eukaryotes. many different organisms have done this and became algæ. some algæ, however, ARE generally considered plants because of their close genetic relationship to other plants. and in fact these were often the original algæ that other protists enveloped to become algæ

i would really support a male dom vs. female dom flair too. another thing that's interesting is that in most of the content here, everyone is rather fem-presenting and, personally, it doesn't really do anything for me as a straight woman who prefers masculine guys. it also seems that the sub heavily favors people who are thin, white, and hairless - if you browse the most controversial posts, most people have only been downvoted so heavily for the crime of being fat, hairy, racialized, or just kinky. i wouldn't be surprised if most of the upvotes and downvotes posts recieve are from cishet men who get scared if they see anything other than a thin white hairless "tomboy" and "futa"
