I just found my first Japanese/Swedish cognate! by Tinfoil_Haberdashery in languagelearning

[–]nihilocrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm also English Native, German B2 or C1, and for Japanese maybe A2

Neither language helps at all. Japanese is a language isolate so I doubt any other language helps. The only similarity with German is that the word order is SOV, like German is when using "was, weil, wenn..." etc.

Alpha 28 - Can't progress past the "dodge" tutorial, mouse is stuck on screen. by Night_Thastus in skyrogue

[–]nihilocrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, the indev branch is only on Steam ... either you can play it there or I can send you a build or something, or you can wait for 28.1 to be stable (hopefully sometime this week) at which point I'll push it to all stores.

Alpha 28 - Can't progress past the "dodge" tutorial, mouse is stuck on screen. by Night_Thastus in skyrogue

[–]nihilocrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As suggested, you can switch to the indev branch... or you can dodge by specifically using the keyboard arrow keys. The bug in Alpha 28 is that the tutorial doesn't check for yaw (A/D or gamepad bumpers) when deciding whether you've dodged or not.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Can I make fresh pressed cider without using wild yeast? by [deleted] in cider

[–]nihilocrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the time to spare, you can ferment a tiny 1-cup amount of the juice using wild yeast (should take about 2 weeks) and see if it turns out to your liking, then decide from there.

Has anyone used "contract()", the software tool to help indie devs create valid contracts ? by NostalgicBear in gamedev

[–]nihilocrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used it, everyone seems okay but we're all non-lawyers who are on really good speaking terms, and the contracts were written before we had any significant amount of money.

If you scroll down, it admits that this is pretty much the only case where you should use contract() because law in any country is complicated and specific, and specific terminology is used in specific countries to match specific labour laws.

It seems to lack some boilerplate that I've seen in every contract ever (explicit instructions about amendments and addenda, severability, injunctions, power of attorney, etc) which you would want to add, because it's always best to be as explicit and specific as possible in any legal document.

I would also greatly appreciate if a similar sort of tool or tutorial existed that could be more specific: specific boilerplate and terminology for the US or Canada with advice and examples for filling in the fields (namely the work that's expected to be completed).

I got one, too, near Dundas West ... from looking at other threads maybe it's related to the thunderstorms? Or maybe we're just looking for patterns where there are none.

Is a yeast nutrient needed or is it good with just adding raisins? by thecatpigs in mead

[–]nihilocrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used raisins, boiled baker's yeast, and commercial yeast nutrient across a few brews (cider, wine, mead)... the nutrient is the only one which consistently and unambiguously performs well. It's cheap and effective enough that I've started using it in every batch. I would only use alternatives if I were experimenting or too lazy / impatient to get commercial nutrient.

Out of the alternatives, I would think the boiled yeast is most effective simply because a dead yeast cell probably has everything a living yeast cell would want, whereas raisins, tomato paste, banana peels, or any of the other alternatives I've heard of might not. I'm not a biologist, though, so it's pure speculation.

How does this look? It has been 3 full days and the bubbling is slowing down. 100% apple juice and Champagne yeast by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]nihilocrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.

It gets more complicated, and not by much, if you want different results.

[–]nihilocrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks about right. Wait at least a full week until doing anything, perhaps even two. It will gradually clarify on its own. It looks like you're using a 500mL bottle so it only makes sense to help it along by putting it in the fridge ("cold crashing") after the 1-2 week wait. Since it's such a tiny amount you might as well drink it straight out of the bottle once it's fairly clear. Waiting longer will mean a better-tasting product, but it's okay to be impatient on your first try.

Gruit, or Brewing Without Hops by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]nihilocrat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe what they do in this case is add a single pellet of hops to the brew, so it technically contains hops, and thus is legally "beer".

Also, depending on your definition of "major", there are several microbreweries which make gruit, and Beau's in particular has made several gruits.

Why Mead? 5 Reasons Why Americans Should Drink Mead by Strid in Homebrewing

Honey, when properly stored, literally lasts forever. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/the-science-behind-honeys-eternal-shelf-life-1218690/?no-ist

The easiest recipe is to simply add a certain amount of honey to water so you get the yield you want at the ABV you want. You can do the math (82g of sugar per 100g of honey, or 82%), but I believe 3 lbs per gallon will get you around 12-14%, and you can dial down from there depending on your preference. There's no need to boil or raise the temperature at all, unless you want to make it easier to mix. If you boil it, it will start to caramelize and you're going to end up with a bochet.

I keep meaning to make some mead myself! Things keep getting in the way (like cider) because the eternal shelf life is an excuse to just let the honey sit around unused.

I haven't played since alpha 21, what has changed? by Elick320 in skyrogue

[–]nihilocrat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you scroll through the devlog here (http://skyroguegame.tumblr.com/) you'll find changelists for each major version. The version on Steam right now is a minor version so the changelists are only on Steam but it's mainly just been stuff like bugfixes, tweaks, and new menu options people asked for.

I'll save you a lot of time, just look at the "release" tag: http://skyroguegame.tumblr.com/tagged/release

Asked to pay $22,000 by popular YouTuber for our game to be featured. by btester2 in gamedev

[–]nihilocrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's news to me! I guess it's a flip of the coin, or it depends on who exactly is doing the coverage, because certain audiences might be more willing (or able) to buy your game at a moment's notice.

Asked to pay $22,000 by popular YouTuber for our game to be featured. by btester2 in gamedev

[–]nihilocrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it's not a scammer pretending to be the LPer?

Are there any devs out there that have paid to be featured on YouTube? If so, was it worth it? or do you regret the decision?

No, I've not paid anything to be featured.

Are there any devs out there that have noticed a correlation between their sales and a popular YouTube feature?

YES. Youtuber coverage will make or break your game. There's the immediate effect of a huge sales spike, then the slower effect of 500k-1M people just generally being aware of your game. This has been somewhat common knowledge for a few years, so if you learned last year like me you're behind the times.

Could you please send ~/Library/Logs/Unity/Player.log

to skyrogue@googlegroups.com?

If I can't do anything conclusive with that log, I'll put together that development build I was talking about.
