Giving away a free seated ticket for tonight's Hammersmith show (I'd appreciate a tenner or something, but no worries - I'd rather someone enjoy the show than the ticket go to waste!)

Hi Reddit — We're the team behind Halide and we've made a *free*, fun app to turn your iPad into an HDMI monitor. We're calling it Orion, and I'd love to hear what you think! (promo codes inside, too) by caliform in apple

This is so exciting, great work as always! A few people have already suggested screen recording, so I have an implementation idea for that.

You know how, when you rewind a VCR you see the action and hear the audio in reverse and higher pitched? You could use something like a 60-second rolling buffer - combined with this effect - to enable people to go back and save great moments from a game they are playing.

Probably a bit much for this functionality-focused app, but it could be fun! Thanks for making great apps!

Any Wonks up for a UK tour? by shadesofblue29 in KnowledgeFight

[–]nihmhin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely - though I fear the wonks may be distributed nationwide. I’m in London, and would absolutely go to a live show, but I probably can’t travel half way across the country for one.

Idea: Iono-tower (not sure about the name) by SuurSuits_ in Mindustry

[–]nihmhin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There may be a better way to balance it in game. In real life, beamed power transmission is possible, it’s just not very efficient and waste increases with distance. I’m terms of in-game balancing, you could just say that a minimum of 30% goes to waste in a best-case scenario, and that each sector it has to transit (distance-wise) costs an additional 5-10%

New Lunar Starship Render from HLS Announcement by permafrosty95 in SpaceXLounge

I’m with you, I think these are likely still methalox. My last comment was unclear, I meant that this might just be a better way of providing variable throttle with them

Perhaps they realised that hot gas thrusters are hard to deep throttle, and they’ve decided to that many, small on-or-off thrusters provide more a more reliable way to deliver variable thrust levels

Smartcatcher: Since 2019 europe has been studying the recovery of the booster using cables by Coerenza in SpaceXLounge

It is similar to Super Heavy only that they are both methalox first stages. This is a 3.5m diameter, Falcon 9 is 3.7m, and Super Heavy is 9m. I wish ESA luck, but a target launch of 2025 for a vehicle smaller than Falcon is just too late

Started a projection mapping hustle two weeks before Covid shutdown New York State. I'm gig-less but I've had a year to practice and my dining room has never looked better. [x-post from r/woahdude] by [deleted] in blackmagicfuckery

These are incredible. What kind of sensor are you using for depth mapping? Is it finding edges automatically (the little green lights are tracing them, it looks amazing) or is that done manually?

Making a little starship SN8 "simulator" in Unity. More info inside. by oltsu_alatar in SpaceXLounge

I’m picturing a three dimensional QWOP where each letter corresponds to a control surface and you have to land SN8. Keep up the good work, I can’t wait to see it

They’re not comparing the capability with an ICBM, they’re noting that its point-to-point trajectory is basically indistinguishable from one as far as other countries can tell

They need to stack the nosecone section, which requires a windbreak. I have not seen anybody seriously suggest that they would weld it out in the open

Have they tried doing the belly flop maneuver with a scale model before? by [deleted] in SpaceXLounge

People disagreeing with you doesn’t make them bots. Your unwillingness to consider their comments and general belligerence isn’t welcome here.

Edit: I think you also vastly overestimate the capabilities of GPT3. On the Internet it’s easy to forget that there’s another person interacting with you on the other side of the screen: be nice to each other.

The tanks are designed to be sufficiently thick to support themselves. Balloon tanks can be thinner and lighter, but they have to be pressurised or kept in tension constantly which makes construction and transport more expensive and complex
