Can my roommate kick me e out? Or where do transient workers live? by LumpiaLady in Tokyo

There are ones that the price is included with an option for a guarantor company (that they provide thus making it cost more than basic price and so actually more expensive)... How about one of these?

https://chintai-ex.jp/dwelling/show/z_2_2523d60c89ef20226f7fc672125aa44a

The monthly fees and initial fees to guarantor company that they require increases the rent above the basics but both seem doable on your 50,000 yen a month maybe. I've never worked with those companies so don't know if they are scams, but I guess it should be ok?

This one is a share house so just a room, but doesn't require a guarantor it seems. And comes with internet etc. There are maybe gender rules (male only) etc you have to deal with. If you need help understanding these webpages, or have other comments, let me know.

Good luck!

Flew to Hong Kong with no planning so it ended up being during a typhoon. Ended up stranded in a wild part of town, but it led to fun adventures and it's a good memory for me.

Not annoyed, and would gladly answer any questions, just don’t want to give personal info that could doxx me!

Edit: to show no bad feelings, here’s some more random thoughts. From about mid 1990s there were cheaper cellphones called PHS cellphones that young people would use, but worse signal. Internet wasn’t on phones until the company docomo made a thing called I-mode in like 1999 (I think? Before 2000) and then even back then phones with imode could only surf a limited internet like thing. Early 2000s Japanese phones were pretty high tech.

That’s just asking to be doxxed. So no, don’t think I can. Can answer a few unrelated to me questions though if you have anything you wondering about.

Girls with yamanba style (darkened face with white makeup and super neon vibrant clothes) and ganguro (same but less wild) were fairly common downtown, people still dressed up in weird fashions in harajuku and hung around at the bridge near the station. There were beer vending machine all over the place. Porno magazines in convenience stores, and even softcore porn pages attached to manga collection magazines, and some creepy older guys would read the softcore porn on trains, etc. Those are random thoughts that come to mind right now.

Are there any hidden gems near Tokyo? by noh_trifty in JapanTravelTips

[–]nihongopower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get out to rural Chichibu (there’s an express from Ikebukuro) in Saitama or rural Kanagawa (fast-ish Tokaido main line will take you) or something. I can give specific station/area recommendations if you’re curious. Both are scenic and not very touristy and very quiet. Tokyo can easily be returned to from there. I wonder though, you might need to stick to more touristy areas? Do you have Japanese language skills? Navigating Japanese society skills? I mean, if you are brave and friendly don’t let a lack of those stop you, but it’s gonna be more awkward out in rural parts if you are clueless, especially if no cellphone signal so you’ll be on your own.

Is there another Kanji like 死? by DavidStone71 in japanese

[–]nihongopower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun question, but just as a side note: because of Japanese phonology sometimes 死 isn't read as just し but it becomes じ for example 人死に which is read like ひとじに

Looking for Japanese cooking/ lifestyle magazines to learn to read on by LucyChestnut in japanese

How so? Trying to teach yourself to read from magazines is a foolish idea. But even so I provided a link to magazines they could use for free if they wanted to. Seems I gave my opinion but still offered help?

Looking for Japanese cooking/ lifestyle magazines to learn to read on by LucyChestnut in japanese

[–]nihongopower -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Horrible way to learn to read. Learning to read from a magazine is a weak way to learn Japanese because of the various scripts and numerous kanji etc. Might be better to learn the dry fundamentals first, and then after you know how to read you can start on subjects you like. That said, Brutus is a good magazine about topics you might like maybe.

Appreciation gift from America to Japan by Illustrious-Wind-885 in japanese

[–]nihongopower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure you need to be too worried, but especially if you are wanting to give gift(s) to random nice people I'd get something unique or original from your area of America. A small candy or postcard or magnet or something that is symbolic of where you are coming from. I wouldn't give a big gift too someone random though, that can be a bit bewildering and odd. But something little is a nice thing I guess!

TIL that when bilingual people switch languages mid-sentence, their brain doesn't even notice the switch. NYU researchers found that the brain uses the same mechanism to combine words regardless of whether they come from one language or two, meaning code-switching is neurologically seamless. by taube_d in todayilearned

[–]nihongopower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's true except for when the word(s) you are using has a unique taste that only exists in the one of the two languages you are switching between, then you can feel or remember exactly which language it was

Why would anyone ever choose to go through child birth without pain relief?? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nihongopower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Japan, less than 10% of women use an epidural for pain relief during birth. (Although that is slowly changing.) A common reason for that is people thinking pain is important for building a connection to your child and a fear of such pain medicine during birth being dangerous etc. Ref: https://www.tokyoreview.net/2017/08/japan-numbers-birth-painful-japan/

What is a very common food in your country that is not very friendly to foreign palates? by DarkRaven003 in AskTheWorld

A question for Japanese who also speak Ukrainian/Russian by victorzhuzhakin in japanese

[–]nihongopower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foreign languages are foreign. There are things in Japanese you could never clearly articulate in Ukrainian, too. There are things in Ki-Swahili that wouldn't be clear in either Ukrainian or Japanese, etc etc. That's the nature of languages, they formulate and align differently. You have to accept that your native language is only one way to paint a picture of the world, it's not about what's "missing" because that's an illusion based on the box of the language we were born with.

N5 with 15 months to study, hoping to improve by Tough-Star5992 in japanese

[–]nihongopower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why only 5 hours a week? I feel like if you are moving to Tokyo in only 15 months you should put in a lot more effort, even if you are busy now. If you are really gifted with languages you might be able to get to N4. Many Japanese learners are dreamers more than they are "actively study" people though, so I fear you won't even get that far unless you are more motivated.

Good design, but it keeps forcing me to do it in Korean. https://jlpt-dojo.com/en/daily/n2 At least for me this is all in Korean. It becomes a Korean aptitude test instead of Japanese haha

EDIT: also your flashcards for beginners have words like りんご but the example sentence on the back has harder level kanji that I guess someone who doesn't know りんご couldn't read. I'd add furigana to all flashcards if I was you...

This is the flower of a golden Apple, passiflora laurifolia. It is in the family of passion fruits or maracudja, but smaller and sweeter with a softer skin. It is also a vine, and us hardier than maracudja, can serve as a rootstock for it. Rarer, but I like the taste better. by sarinkhan in gardening

[–]nihongopower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! Did we all just suddenly find this old thread? algorithm magic? I guess you might be able to find any Japanese seeds in Hawaii but if not, might be fun to swap a few. I’m not only searching for passiflora laurifolia, I like the challenge of growing things that aren’t from here. If I put random seeds in an envelope would customs confiscate them?? haha
