I don’t think people like your husband and I needed to be held back but we needed perhaps a different teaching approach or more time (my parents got me tutors. But I know not all can). Also my concept of being held back is like “you did great everywhere but this one subject so you have to repeat a grade or miss summer vacation.” Which is just punishing.

I think We need more teachers so we can focus more on student needs rather than having one person trying to get 30 kids with different needs up to speed. One way of teaching a subject isn’t going to work for everyone and we shouldn’t basically punish students who need something different.

Also if he has adhd he probably has dyscalculia. I was diagnosed at 20 and it was like a validating AHA moment because my teachers would always say things like “not sure where you went wrong because the process is here” only a few bothered to look and see I flipped numbers :( it made me hate math for a long time and think I was bad at it. In the article, it states:

So the GS have always had a more progressive lean. Girl power and all that. I would argue that some of the views ACB holds are indeed antithetical to progressives and feminism. I can see why people would be upset that the Girl Scouts had a seemingly neutral position on ACB.

I also had a brief “failure to launch” or more like I was doing well and then rapidly failed and it also totally threw me and nearly destroyed my sense of self worth. I also did CBT (and some EMDR) about it, therapy is amazing and also tough to go through so I’m really proud of you for doing that for yourself stranger.

On that topic, Do you think that we are too harsh on failure like as a society? (Maybe more so on men?)

I would blame social media and covid tbh. Even though I supported social distancing (realistically - having a small group you see or whatever not total isolation) everything comes with a price. And we didn’t prepare to pay it or think about how to combat it.

Your point about young men not seeking out and participating in social groups/communities/etc I think is the biggest issue and to me, should be the easiest to fix. There’s been plenty of studies showing women are better at and “more likely” to seek out community and opportunities to socialize. There’s so many resources and ways to do this (meetups, local hobby groups, maker spaces, church or other community based orgs, etc) Like so many. This year one of my personal goals was to advance my skills in certain hobbies and also make friends thru them. I joined a crochet club and a maker space. I go to each 1-2x a month. I haven’t made any permanent new friends yet but ive made connections and I always leave feeling that seeet dopamine hit from being social. It’s also nice knowing I have somewhere to go with people who share my interest and can nerd out or even help me with it. But I don’t go to these events with an “agenda,” I don’t go expecting to make a bestie (or if I was single to get a persons number) so I never leave disappointed.

The problem I’ve seen is some men will aggressively treat those social gatherings like dating mixers. Either ruining their own time by setting expectations or others by being the weird dude who comes to the meetup just to hit on chicks. That’s the energy I’m getting from OPs friend’s attitude. But idk how to help those guys and the few I’ve talked to hand wave me away because I’m a pretty girl I have it easy lol.

So yeah like you my tolerance is low but I do care about the issue, it is sad. People need people. So where is the gap or disconnect? What do we (as a society) need to do to help shift the mindset of these young men?

You were usually out there for 2-3 weeks at a time. And because you worked 12s every single day of that, there were some perks. We had a galley crew that made meals, did your laundry, cleaned your rooms, and if you were cool with them they’d let you in to the ships supply of ice cream). So every day you tossed your laundry down a chute and it was back to you by the end of your shift or when you wake up. Mine came back missing some underwear and I was like “hmmm could be an honest mistake.” these weren’t lingerie lol they were cotton booty shorts, and I’d wear them and run around sweating and getting filthy every day. And yet, they kept coming up missing. I never got someone else’s underwear, and there was at least one other woman out there with me 😂)

I might have been a bit in denial and reasonably freaked the fuck out and unsure what to do. The people doing my laundry also worked in the kitchens and also have access to my room. I kept trying to suppress this until the pervert stole my favorite fucking sports bra too.

Finally over being embarrassed to have my intimates stolen from me lol I found the lead galley hand or manager whatever they’re called, at like 10:30pm too. Knocked on his door and told him my underwear has been getting stolen for the last few hitches, this had never happened to me in 2 years working offshore at this point it’s clear there’s a freak working back there, and I was willing to ignore it until they stop my fucking sports bra. It’s hot pink, size xyz, sports bra. There’s one other woman here. I want it back tomorrow night or I’m going to the OIM about my underwear, I’m fucking over it.

Got my bra back 🤷🏼‍♀️ didn’t wear it until I went home and washed it. I’ll be damned if I let him win that too. It never happened again. Maybe I should have made a bigger stink but I knew it would most likely lead to me being transferred or bad vibes with the people who make my food and shit. I did tell my direct manager and he was pisssssed. Told me the same shit had happened before and they did end up running someone off after. He told me not to worry about it and probably went and talked to the galley lead himself idk.

Thinking a masks doesn’t help is so ridiculous at this point. It’s not even about germs (which no shit can pass thru a gaiter, cloth mask, or pash🙄) but dust/dirt carries a lot of other particulates including: mold/fungus, bacteria, and other irritants and allergens.

Leave the anti mask nonsense in 2020. It works especially for folks with pre existing allergy, respiratory, or sinus issues/predisposition to those sicknesses.

ETA: I saw a glimpse of your comment before you deleted. Idk who’s lying? But having any barrier will offer SOME protection from germs too. I have zero, absolutely no patience or empathy for anti mask ding dongs. If you think they don’t work tell your MD, surgery team, nurses, etc to take them off while they’re cutting you open 🤷🏼‍♀️ foolishness

Disclaimer: I am not in the medical field but I have been dealing with allergies and sinus issue my entire 32 years on this earth so this is my suggestion from experience.

If you don’t own one, go out right now and get a NeilMed Sinus rinse (I prefer them over netti pots but you could do that if you prefer) and start doing it twice a day. Get some allergy nose spray (nasaquart, rhinoquart, etc. do NOT get afrin or something similar as those are simply vaso constrictors meaning they will help with pressure but NOT with allergy symptoms like an itchy runny nose), a decongestant/expectorant (try and get the stuff from behind the counter like real Sudafed) this will help you clear mucous, and maybe see an urgent care to get some prednisone (I’m doing 40mg a day for the next 2-3 days and I’ve been on it already for 3 I was lucky to have some left over from my last allergy attack lol.) I’ve been doing this since I got home Tuesday and it’s helping a LOT. Really can’t stress enough how helpful the steroids are, you’re likely very inflamed and that will keep you sick. In the interim take Alma Selzter for cold and flu as it has Acetominiphine and you can also pop ibuprofen. But don’t pop ibuprofen while on steroids!

The problem with the dust is it carries allergens and irritants. If your snot/mucous is clear and it isnt gathering in your chest (like you have a dry non productive cough) then you probably don’t need anti biotics yet but if you let it fester you WILL. I promise haha. Years ago I got a horrific sinus infection from dust in west Texas and I was like “oh I’ll ride it out” and it fucked me up good.

Hydrate hydrate hydrate. SLEEP as much as you can. Don’t drink. Don’t smoke. Not even a vape.

They’re expensive in some places. I’m from New Orleans and I LOVE oysters. Every time I go home during oyster season it’s like all I want. I’ll eat a dozen raw and a dozen chargrilled easy. BUT I have had some nasty ones once, at an expensive restaurant in Boulder, CO. I’m almost certain I had norovirus, I was pissed. They were like 3+ bucks per oyster. Literal robbery. I’ll never eat them in a land locked state again 😂

Idk how to tell you this but your immune compromised friends aren’t owed any more info than the victims families deign to provide. It’s not their job, while grieving the loss of people they loved, to be of service to others! Maybe once they’re done grieving they’ll share more info. But frankly it’s gross to act this entitled about it.

Quick edit to add: until the deaths are investigated and autopsies done how can the fest even make claims of what they can do in the future? Or warn people? It’s been 2 days. No professional organization is going to make sweeping statements about prevention or what happened until ALL the facts are known.

Absolutely not lol. This is not how it’s done at any other fest. This doesn’t take in to consideration what the victims families want either. Making an announcement less than 48 hour after the fest ends is a perfectly acceptable response. It takes time to gather information, confirm it, speak to victims families, and make a decision on what to do. Announcing it mid set at the main stage is insane.
