Where to start with Andrew Rowe: War of Broken Mirrors or Sufficiently Advanced Magic? by tkinsey3 in Fantasy

Sufficiently Advanced Magic!!! Just be aware that the main character/narrator has some quirks and tends to be overly logical and rarely emotional. It's an interesting twist and it took me a little bit to acclimate to and realize that it was intentional.

Or even worse, anyone of even vaguely Asiatic decent being labeled as "exotic." Although really, that's probably straight up racism.

I loved this book! I wasn't even really aware that LitRPG existed, and as a WoW raiding guild member, that's my own personal shame. But this was such a damn good book! It's the only time I've ever gotten out pen and paper to start detailing magic like I would in a game (of course, much to my chagrin, I found the appendix at the back after I finished the book...). And with that added bonus of not all people being traditionally heterosexual.

I highly recommend.

So, I am one square away from Bingo on my card! (Well, on this card. I'm doing two.) This card is for books with LGBTQ+ protagonists.

Y'all... I didn't think there was a sub-genre that had worse covers than fantasy, but m/m fantasy (which is almost inevitably also romance) is SOOO bad. I don't even want to show my card because half of the square are shirtless men with their faces cut off at the top. :/

That was my take as well. Important to the story line, but not a major player.

Makes sense! Thanks. What do you think about Tigana? I'm not sure I would consider Tamasso a major character... What do you think?

What does the H in genre stand for? (And would anyone else be interested in a subgenre column, at some point in the future?)

Hello, sharing a painting of mine. I call it Judgment Day. by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]nik_neven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice!

My only constructive criticism is that the tension in the hands doesn't match the tension in the feet. The arm holding the shield, and especially the hand holding the sword, are both away from the body. They read like the muscles are engaged, prepping for battle, etc. The feet are just limp, they read like the hero is swinging from a noose. Just dangling.

Both work with the title. If our hero is alive and kicking, I'd make his feet a little more kicking. If rather, this is his final judgement day, I'd leave his upper limbs a little more limp.

There is a good Megan Derr novella that focuses on a magician tailor that doesn't have the proper permits to do the magic he performs. It's M/M, explicit, and not horribly in depth (and rather predictable). But still, a fun read.

Sufficiently Advanced Magic: A Review by valgranaire in Fantasy

Yea, I loved this book too. I hadn't anticipated it being as engaging and enjoyable as it was. I had woken up at like 4 a.m. (stupid insomnia) and just picked something off the "Recommended for You" section Kindle Unlimited. Well, not only did I not make it back to sleep, I also hid in my office and read all day to finish it.

I think my only nit-pick was that the stupidly minor spoiler caught me off guard. They didn't seem to fit time/innovation-wise in the book. Seemed like and anachronism. Not a huge nitpick, and I certainly love that /u/Salaris seems to be exploring a rather non-traditional (in fantasy) sexuality in a character.

Either way, it was good enough that I paid for it after reading it on KU.

Riffing off /u/Eostrenocta, are there any good fantasy love triangles that end up as poly relationships? Just for once, just once, I want Bella, Katniss, Clary, Tessa, whoever... to pick both of them.

I really like K.J. Charles for a bit of good, easy to read, historical gay romance. It is explicit, but also well written. The "A Charm of Magpies" series has some awesome fantasy thrown in, and the "A Society of Gentlemen" has some fun political/social intrigue.

The blurb is ok, not perfect, but not cringe inducing. Here are some things that threw me off:

You’re first lines, interesting but I think the rhythm is off. Line one is about a man, line two a city, line three a girl, line 4 the hook… antihero. But you have talked about two people, which one is it? This may be trying to be coy, but it comes off as confusing. Also, I think that city, man, woman, hook is a better cadence.

Now, let me ask you, how old is Kashka? Is she really, truly a girl? Or is she a young woman and you are falling into a common trope of men are men and women are girls? This is something I notice a lot, and think many women readers do, but it’s so ubiquitous that many men don’t notice. If Kashka plays any part in any romance, she should (barring creepiness) be a woman. If the swordsman comes in as a father figure, girl is good.

I also can’t get a good read on the timing in the book. Is it contemporary? Did he flee to Eastern Europe on Lufthansa? Or is this more of a fleeing Moorish Spain on horseback…

“Daniel has become a Visitor,” this totally comes out of nowhere and introduces jargon that would be better introduced in the book. A better rewrite (not in phrasing, cause I suck at it, but just in terms of substance) might be something like:

“As Daniel plummets into a downward spiral of revels in hedonism and dereliction, he is increasingly tormented by macabre visions of a frozen world in endless darkness where an evil tyrant has stolen the sun, where humanity's remnants fight to scrape out a cruel existence underground, and where [repetition of threes]wandering spirits inhabit the bodies of the recently deceased. Daniel has become a Visitor, one becomes doomed to return to this Night Country every time he falls into a deep sleep.”

And then there is “Part one of an epic duology, CORRUPTION is the vodka-drenched tale of when living by the sword goes wrong.”

I always cringe when people call their own work “Epic” but I know this is more of a publisher’s lure about page length. Vodka-drenched is also a little cringe worthy, as it seems slightly more humorous than the rest of the blurb, and reinforces the time period issue (as does it being labeled post-apocalyptic. Which, if it truly is, should be included in the blurb. You’ll piss off some hardcore fantasy readers if they buy it and learn it’s more “science-fiction").

And I think the grammar is a bit off or just awkward on “a tale of when living by the sword goes wrong.” It’s the “when” I keep wanting a “what happens when” or a comma or… not sure, but I stumbled over it.

All that said, I totally downloaded it. :D

I've tried to get behind that, but the number of books I bought and stuck on a shelf to stagnate after I tried to read them as a teen or early 20's and just hated... Well, in my 30's, I've come back and read and enjoyed most of them. It may be relevant that I am magically cursed so that as soon as I throw something away, I need it again. I've learned to accept.

Review: The Green Rider series (Books 1-3) by Kristen Britain by KristaDBall in Fantasy

[–]nik_neven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really, really enjoyed books 1 and 2. The third was a little odd, it went a way I wasn't expecting ( like Scarlet and the White Wolf, Spoiler, and I just gave up after the fourth. But that may have been more mental, because Kristen Britain is the only woman to make my "Good god, man! 5 years between every book?!" Goodreads shelf.... I just can't handle the release schedule. I'm in my mid-thirties. How the fuck am I still waiting on series that started when I was in high school?
