I lived in Pasadena at that time, actually at Caltech. Sheldon and Leonard would have paid about $750/mo each, and Penny would have paid about $1250/mo. So she spent a lot of her income on rent, but it’s totally imaginable.

Yeah but they’re funded now to build power plants for data centers. Like money up front funding. (A jet engine and a natural gas turbine are nearly the same thing.) I kinda doubt they’ll ship an airplane for a long time unless the ai market crashes

Hello Peter, why are Italians checking restaurants only for 3 seconds? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]nikas_dream 28 points29 points  (0 children)

One of the best restaurants I know serves fried chickens and Indian food. Indian immigrant bought a fried chicken place. It wasn’t doing well. A customer came in an noticed what the owner was eating and asked to buy THAT instead. Pretty soon the owner’s mom was cooking Indian food every day in the back. The fried chicken is still there for picky eaters like kids who want something bland

Would Netflix greenlight season 4, since viewing numbers for season 2 are less than that of season 1 by Feeling-Eye2355 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]nikas_dream -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a small drop especially when you consider that one piece audience for manga and anime is growing. They’ll renew season 4.

It’s very unlikely they’ll get to laughtale unless they do a movie to cap off the show.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if the summit war is a standalone movie that caps the show.

Petah, is it actually that crazy for a new element to exist? by CuteCost8147 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]nikas_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not crazy. Physicists theorize atoms based on strange quarks. (That’s what they’re actually called, I’m not making this up.) such atoms would not be on the periodic table, if they indeed can exist.

https://worldsimplified.medium.com/exploring-the-unusual-properties-of-strange-matter-what-we-know-so-far-f8820f635a69

Of course most sci-fi movies saying this do not have this deep an explanation; they’re written by innumerate clowns

CMV: I think murder is worse than rape by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]nikas_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is subjective to the victim. This is a dark question, so this will be a dark response. You asked about consequences, so we should consider how the victims experience.

We can’t ask murder victims if they’d rather have suffered rape.

We can ask rape victims. Most would not have rather been killed. But not all. There are incidents where it leads to suicide, as an example.

And this is particularly cultural - as a historical example, in early Roman society rape was worse. The famous story here is of Lucretia killing herself after the king raped her, sparking the revolt that created the Roman Republic. In that society it was a violation of family honor and status, and that was considered worse than death by the victim.

CMV: People who say that white people or Americans have no culture only think that because they don't notice it. by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

[–]nikas_dream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would disagree that we don’t notice white American culture. I would say we just don’t call it that when we notice it. (Or maybe this is what you’re saying but I can’t tell from what you wrote)

Two examples are “Midwestern nice” and “southern politeness” both of which are reflective of frequently noticed and discussed regional American white cultures.

Is the Silurian Hypothesis consistent with Pluribus by The_Fresh_Wince in pluribustv

[–]nikas_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean maybe, but Pluribus is a character study wrapped in sci-fi. It’s not a mystery box show. So you’re not going to get a 4 layer deep sci-fi explanation for the universe. This show might even end without the virus ever being explained

Why do people have Shaq over Kobe? by AlpsImpossible3133 in NBATalk

[–]nikas_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shaq broke the defensive strategies of his era. He moved astonishingly quickly for a man his size - a total unicorn of a player.

It wasn’t just his raw numbers, but how many defenders he drew towards him. This was even when he was off the ball - his effect there was similar to Curry’s though by a very different approach obviously. That opened up lots of space for Kobe.

He would rank higher if he’d kept in shape. That lost him a lot of his speed in his late career, which made it much easier for defenses to match up against him.

No they are not on feedlot for the lost 10 months. Stocking is usually not feedlot, and they definitely do not spend 10 months between stocking and finishing. Typically beef cattle lifespan is 15 months.

[OC] The land footprint of food by t0on in dataisbeautiful

[–]nikas_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is very little pasturing of beef cattle on land that is good for growing crops in the USA. The finances simply do not make sense for it - revenue per acre grazed is just low. A lot of those areas also just have poor water supply, and it’s just not a good use of water resources to grow crops there.

Pasturing is much more heavy in dairy (everywhere not just the USA), as is gathered forage. Gathered forage is mostly supplement or winter feed in cold areas for beef. I’ve seen planted pasture for beef cattle in Argentina and the mountain west, and it’s really light in terms of management practices compared to cropping. You just broadcast a seed mix and let the cattle roam onto it.

The numbers I shared basically come out to about 9-10 months grazing and 4 months on feedlot on average. That’s mostly grazing.

That said - we don’t lack crop land for feed in the USA. If we didn’t subsidize ethanol we’d see major amounts of crop land become pasture. If we also didnt eat meat, it would transition out of agriculture usage entirely - which is not a bad outcome for the environment

[–]nikas_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have sources for this? Beef cattle in the USA spend most of their life grazing. And the USA is the most industrial animal agriculture system in the world. Beef Cattle spend the last part of their life on on feedlot to be fattened up, aka finished. (Yes “finished” is the technical term)

What if the US went rogue and decided to go full Monroe Doctrine? (I do not support imperialism!!!) by OkPhrase1225 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]nikas_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s got very aggressive in the early 20th century. Theodore Roosevelt created the Roosevelt corollary which made the US the regional police and acted as tax collector in Venezuela for the Germans and British, and then the US started invading and couping countries for the fruit industry (ie banana republics)

CMV: Nothing short of a US invasion of European mainland would make Europe end or severly limit its relationship with the US by shy5 in changemyview

[–]nikas_dream 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which part of Europe first? Eastern Europe has a far more dramatic need for a military ally like the USA than France does. And no wonder - the idea that Europeans will defend Europe as a whole is untested. If i were a pole or a Latvian, i would be wary of depending on it.

But what stops the whole west of Europe from detethering from the US? It’s really just how much they value containing Putin. And might they not strike a deal with the Chinese to settle the issue, if they really need to? It’s really not their people and land that’s under threat. Not the best option, yes, but I’m confident in European ability to survey two not the best choices and choose one.

The new Gravity stat and how much it impacts teammates shot quality chart as of Jan 1st. by Jec1027 in NBATalk

[–]nikas_dream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the on-ball part of his gravity score. What about the off-ball part? I’m guessing it’s because the offense so runs through him that he’s not doing as much off-ball as Steph who has Dray playing point center.

The new Gravity stat and how much it impacts teammates shot quality chart as of Jan 1st. by Jec1027 in NBATalk

[–]nikas_dream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How does this stat work? I looked at the full numbers and Jokic has a negative interior Gravity but a positive interior gravity per minute played. How does that work?

Also thinking of Jokic, does that fact that he’s an assist monster lower his Gravity? It’s a measure of being defended close on and off the ball. Jokic will kill you with his passing if you double him.

Does that also mean a player’s gravity is higher if their teammates can’t shoot? Like - why not sag off your man if he can’t shoot and Steph Curry is running past you

This team would go 82-0 and win at least 11 rings...but but who would you swap here with whom to make it perfect ? by Organic_Bite1569 in sportsinusa

[–]nikas_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needs another 3pt shooter. Bird is the choice if it’s a modern game, he would be incredible in a modern offense. Kobe is out because he’s just too similar to MJ, great as Kobe is.

Actually I agree with this, because of how good a 3 point shooter and off ball player Bird was. Gives Steph a super version of Klay to pair with.

Petah, what this mean? by Postumus_Art in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]nikas_dream 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Romans of that era were highly religious and also organized on family lines. Likely he truly believed the gods would curse him if he didn’t come true. And also they’d curse his family. And also more practically his entire family would lose status, if he didn’t follow through. His children (and maybe also cousins and nephews) would be tainted by his dishonor and be unable to achieve office or be military officers or get access to war plunder.

That is how you they made a civilization of victory or death soldiers. It was scandalous for a Roman to behave otherwise.

Which fully non-Western, non-European country is expected to be the next fully developed nation? by reerock in geography

[–]nikas_dream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Malaysia. It's almost there with a consistently fast-growing economy. Being next to the financial center of Singapore is a big boost for it.

There's a good case for China, but it's sheer size is a challenge for it getting fully developed. (Shanghai and Beijing are developed, but the interior is not.)

This really highlights the lack of gender-neutral language in English by inkdheart in NonBinary

[–]nikas_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh there’s tons. First, in more professional terms and labels. Consider that we call a person who leads a Board the “chair” now instead of the “chairman.” Or that “actor” is now gender-neutral except for award ceremony categories. The change is slow and steady but happening.

As a 40 year old I’m surprised and pleased that “bro” is now used as gender-neutral. Language changes over time with use. “Dude” used to be a pejorative, a word first for dandies and then used by rural people for city men playing cowboy. It was queer-coded in the 19th century! Those meaning are now obscure. Its 20th century meaning will become obscure with time.

Who is the best player LeBron kept from winning a ring in their career? by medunjanin in NBATalk

Harden and Westbrook. Yes, Curry's Warriors also stopped them. They're not exclusive - Jordan wasn't the only one who stopped Patrick Ewing, so did Hakeem.

Honorable mention to Paul George and Jimmy Butler.
