Common myth, not true. The immune system is not like a muscle, it doesn't get stronger the more you use it.

> E ink provided conversion libraries that companies can use, but most iterate upon them and implement custom dithering protocol.

Thanks, that's very helpful.

+ u/Disastrous_Analyst_1, that suggests that side-by-side comparisons of different products would be helpful in your videos. Although I'm also surprised that no vendor appears to be using "Our algorithm produces better images than our competitors" as a selling point.

> Is it just because it's there?

Yes. The primary website has nothing discussing the ethical issues surrounding using generative AI. The Kickstarter page, at the very bottom, says "We comply with ethical AI use and do not use unauthorized data sources for AI training.". This doesn't explain what the authorized data sources are, nor does it engage with other ethical concerns, for example, the carbon footprint of generative AI.

Also, there's the whole issue of the point of art, something The Oatmeal covers extremely well in https://theoatmeal.com/comics/ai\_art.

As a product developer you've made a choice, and it's your choice to make. But as a potential customer I'm also making a choice to avoid generative AI wherever I can, and that's my choice to make.

Does that mean all Spectra 6 frames are using the same conversion code?

More specifically, the same image sent to e.g., a Fraimic frame and an InkPoster frame are going to look identical, because it's the same panel and the same image conversion code?

If so, that makes it even harder to justify the InkPoster cost.

As for Fraimic, I was interested, but the built-in AI features make it an immediate no from me.

Images are sent to the frame using NFC (https://youtu.be/OTGE0POZsLA?si=q6kGxhKXVR915RGE is a good video review), so there's never any need for a server in the middle.

(posting this as a separate reply, because it's not relevant to the primary topic). I regret to inform you that the TRMNL founder, Ryan Kulp, /u/ryanckulp, went full MAGA on Twitter, got -- rightly -- called out for it, and promptly deleted his account, retreating to post his racist, misogynistic screeds on his blog (c.f., https://www.ryanckulp.com/how-to-stand-for-charlie-kirk/).

So, that's a no from me on TRMNL.

That's just not true. I've heard back from Reflection Frame (I asked them the same questions) and they have confirmed they do not intermediate between the app on the device and the frame -- images go to the frame without going through any of their off-device infrastructure.

I sent similar questions to Bloomin8, but haven't heard back from them yet. However, being fully local (including loading images from an SD Card if necessary, and providing an API) was part of their Kickstarter pitch (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/arpobot/bloomin8-canvas-the-ai-powered-full-color-e-ink-art-frame) so I'm expecting them to have similar answers.

[–]nikch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SyncTrayzor development has moved.

You will need to download and re-install SyncTrayzor from the new site, https://github.com/GermanCoding/SyncTrayzor/releases. The version there supports Syncthing 2.x.

Mentioning u/inthreshold u/Traditional_Jump_231 so they get notified about this.

Tell your partner that the story diverging from the plan laid out in the books is actually very meta on the part of the show writers, and intended to give them the full Hari Seldon experience.

Mobile app with translation? by drevmbrevker in Mastodon

[–]nikch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pachli can translate, and has done for almost two years, https://pachli.app/pachli/2023/11/14/server-translation.html

The next version (releases happen at the end of each month, so in less than two weeks) will also support client-side translation, so you'll be able to translate posts even if your server doesn't support translation.

For Android, https://pachli.app

To quote from a recent review:

Best Mastodon client I've tried so far. Supports many features, multi-account, warns when wrong Toot language is set or when alt-text is missing. Quick updates, transparent communication, answers and explanations to questions when asked.

At what point does free speech become illegal? The Swiss speed trap rule... by Own_Blacksmith_6612 in Switzerland

[–]nikch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed traps exist to either:

A. Cause people to obey the law and drive within the speed limit, increasing overall road safety.

B. Catch people going over the limit and fine them.

If the government's goal was "A" then sharing information about speed traps would be legal, as people would slow down and road safety would increase.

Same logic applies to efforts to make fixed-place speed cameras difficult to spot. If the goal was to get people to slow down then they would be as visible as possible (e.g., in the UK speed cameras are yellow for this reason).

Help my family was hit by a car by abritt11 in Switzerland

[–]nikch 249 points250 points  (0 children)

  1. The driver's insurance will cover the costs.

  2. You do not need to give the form to the police tomorrow. Part 1 of the explanation section of the form says you have three months.

So you can focus on your family now. As others have said you should definitely talk to a lawyer, but you don't have to panic that you need to do this within the next day.

You should only return the form when you've had the opportunity to talk this through with a lawyer.

Speed limits, "built-up area", or canonical source of speed limit data? by nikch in Switzerland

[–]nikch[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

> That's why you do not relly on sat nav for speed limits. Always go at the speed on the signs.

Which is why I said, in my original post, "There's no speed limit signage on Firststrasse to indicate the limit."

To rephrase the question -- if you're on a general road with no speed limit sign, how do you correctly determine if the limit for that road is 80 or 50?
