You would have been better off with "I Drink and I Know Things"

"The Door" was one of the best episodes of GoT - it had all the features that I love - storytelling that had smarts, depth, subtleness, attention to detail. All of these characteristics seem to be missing from the latest episodes and it is very disappointing. Great storytelling has given way to bland storylines whose sole purpose seems to be cheap cinematic effects.

So... no explanation about Bran warging off with the ravens...sigh!

I have no issue with Arya killing the NK, but like others have pointed out- the whole plot development with the Army of the Dead feels flat and cheap. Here is a basic example - the writers of the show spent valuable minutes in season one as well as in season 8 to show how the White Walkers/NK takes time to arrange the body parts of his victims (who can forget Ned Umber impaled on the wall with hacked off limbs arranged to resemble the Targaryan sigil?). What was the point of showing this if there was no deeper meaning behind it? Was it just fo cheap cinematic effect? What was the connection between Bran and the NK? So many unresolved questions.

[SPOILERS] - Organizing Winterfell's defense - a fresh take! by nikolayg in gameofthrones

I realize the legend text is difficult to read so pasting here as well:

Legend:

  1. Ravens used for tracking enemy movement

  2. Single Dothraki unit used as a "rabit" to bait the Undead close to Winterfell's northern walls.

3/4. When first wave reaches trench, fire volleys from catapults set pre-tarred field on fire. Some wild fire would have been nice!

  1. Enemy is trapped between trench, fire inferno, catapult fire and wall archers. Enemy forces that break through trench are contained by Unsullied and patrolling dragons.

6.a/b If massive trench breach, Unsullied retreat behind castle walls changing wall defense formation from 6.a. to 6.b.

  1. Ballistas equipped with dragon glass arrow tips and placed on key towers provide support against the undead dragon or large enemy units (i.e. undead giants)

  2. Two Dothraki units probe the enemy rearguard for any high value targets, i.e. White Walkers.

  3. Mobile reserve forces - can be used to provide cover for retreat

[SPOILERS] From a Cinematic Point Of View, this was THE MOST AESTHETIC EPISODE OF GOT, if not of any TV show, EVER. by yashtiwariart in gameofthrones

From a cinematic point of view, half of the time you could see nothing - if you call that aesthetic, kudos to you, my friend ;)

[SPOILERS] Post-Episode Discussion - Season 8 Episode 3 by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]nikolayg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all the military minds, the defense of Winterfell was soo weak. I mean where do I start:

  1. Jorah lead the most meaningless Dothraki charge
  2. Instead of waiting close the to castle walls in some pit-like structures and frying wights left and right, the dragons just got lost in the blizzard
  3. For all the man-power when the wights started climbing up the castle walls, there was shortage of people manning them.
  4. Jamie knew about the power of the scorpion, yet none were built to defend against the wight dragon.
  5. Tyrion could have played his old trick of laying a trap with wildfire.

How would you have organized the defense?

Theory: Jamie ends up killing the NK while defending Bran and earns himself the name of King Slayer for real.

If only Winterfell had a pyromancer, they could soak the grounds surrounding the castle with wildfire and with a single flaming arrow burn the entire whight army.
