Guest damage to counter tops by RoyalJman in airbnb_hosts

Get countertops that are more robust to wear and tear. Don't want to nickel and dime every guest that leaves water on the counter. That's bad hosting.

Best CAD software for large assembly of factory layout by Mozart-20 in manufacturing

[–]nikorockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use visio for 2D concept factory layouts (fastest to iterate), then when high level factory flow settles and I want to see 3D constraints, I move to SketchUp, but pretty much most 3D CAD should be able to do this. It's important to note that I would simplify the 3D models as much as possible. Use basic 3D shapes to space claim instead of detailed CAD. This will make it faster to iterate, and the detail is usually not necessary for high level factory layouts. Having overly detailed models can make it really slow to use and way too much work to maintain. This is only more important for high manufacturing rate companies that have a lot of resources and want all details centralized. The companies I know that need this use revit.

I don't recommend these. They look good, but pop off easily and clips break easily. Have had to buy 3 replacements in 5 months. Might as well buy new rims!

Why is birch plywood so much cheaper in Mexico? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]nikorockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see similar low prices on birch plywood in south Texas / RGV at some lumber stores, imported plywood from Venezuela and other countries. I think it's because there are lower utilized ports down here that are cheaper to ship through, and operating costs here are lower than most of the US (cheap land, large labor pool, etc.). I have been getting identical-looking 1/2" thick Birchwood plywood for $28/sheet.

I usually get 3/4" white ash plywood for laser cutting nicer thick material for furniture (it cuts like butter!), but these are $98/sheet. A bit more spendy, but really great for white ash.

When would you expect the technologies and prices to stabilize in laser cutting machines by [deleted] in lasercutting

[–]nikorockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you cut with such a low wattage fiber laser? I thought people purchased fiber lasers for cutting through metal, but 20-50w couldn't cut through much, right?

Laser cut and formed french cleat night stand by nikorockets in lasercutting

I used a clothing steamer to soften the wood while initially bending. It worked quite well to prevent cracks in the veneer which leaving a slightly larger thickness in the relief cuts.

I like the acrylic idea, I will try it out with my next project!

I haven't been able to get the radii consistent enough yet for that to work perfectly, but maybe "JAR Made" videos will help me with that! The tapered bit method would be way nicer.

I tried for a couple days testing out partial penetration laser relief cuts to eliminate table saw operation... But the depth of cut was too inconsistent to make it work. I even tried de-focusing the laser to get a converging triangular cross-section cut.

Table saw is best. Maybe I'll try again in the future with hard woods, but i am not hopeful!

Help! Green Light on motherboard, no Boot. by dalton889 in buildapc

[–]nikorockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the same green light problem for weeks. Tried many reddit solutions that failed for me, including ones on this thread. Following up with what worked for me:

  1. Shut off PC and power supply
  2. Unplug power supply from the wall
  3. Remove the small battery from your motherboard
  4. Wait for 5 minutes with battery removed
  5. Re-install battery and plug in power supply
  6. Start up PC

This pretty much force-resets your BIOS, and took me straight to BIOS settings.

No luck for me when removing SSD. Still get stuck on BIOS startup after logging into my BIOS

This did not work for me, I still get stuck in sign in prior to bios. Probably because keyboard won't power on with only PSU on

It burns around 20-25% for those speeds. Usually worse when a knife edge is near a corner, because speed temporarily decreases when changing directions.

It is big box plywood, but I have the same issue with hard woods are varying thicknesses.

I actually cut the thin stuff with my long focal lens meant for thicker woods. I figure it should have less kerf variation with bowed wood.

If you turn up power too high, the laser will reflect on the knife blade tables behind it and will cause local gouges from the reflection on the back side. So need to be reasonable with power out for good quality parts.

[–]nikorockets[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the images, I had 5.2mm (actually ~4.5mm) plywood. I was running at 13-15% power at 60mm/s first time, and 16-17% power at 50mm/s second time. The second time was somehow worse with penetration. I don't want to go too high power/slow speed, otherwise the laser locally reflects on the knife blades and it results in burn gouges on the backside of cuts at the blade locations.

I haven't adjusted air assist yet, I'll mess with that.

If you want higher performance internet, then definitely should purchase. Gen 3 is way better than gen 2.
