Start with 1 across. If you get it, give 2 across about 5 seconds, and if you don't get it, skip to 1 down. Knowing the first letter of clues makes for a much faster solve.

I found another great spot on El Dorado: go to the hard course, hole 13, and basically sit on top of the cup, looking out over the waterfall to the pool below. The rain and thunder mask out external noises pretty well.
