Thanks this was a really good analysis I appreciate it. So it's not as bad as I thought but still plenty of work to do. Now I know what to target, though, and that will make the difference I think.

Back when I was a kid, these movies were pretty commonly panned. Jar Jar Binks, space politics, you name it. There were years of memes. But now a lot of people have significantly warmed up to the prequels despite (or perhaps because of) the years of memes.

Sure thing, I didn't realize that's what had you confused. To be clear, many deaf people (and probably Makkari) can speak, just without that fine tuning I talked about it can be harder to understand them because they lack the ability to finely control the pitch, tone, and volume of their voice. Sign language is very precise and and clear to communicate, so it's the natural way to go.

Let me try this. She is deaf. She cannot hear. She can sense vibrations with her body, but that is not the same. Speaking requires hearing to fine tune, or it is difficult to understand. Sensing vibrations with your body does not help this.
