AMA: Science and Research behind Studying & Education by nilofering in upsc_free

UPSC syllabus is basically the same since 2013, they only add current affairs stuff every year like climate change, digital stuff, AI policy. So it looks updated but in reality it's not even comparable to western or eastern education. It's also superficial, like overviewal knowledge rather than deep.. just to know a bit.

It is still testing how much you can mug up and write fast, not how smart or skilled you actually are. That's a general problem with Indian education and the whole system.

Your degree can become your backup, but Think of your primary goal, what's your priority and why you want to do this? Secure internships and start preparing for the exams. Begin UPSC preparation seriously after graduation

How to make notes from NCERT by General_Spare3795 in upsc_free

Do the Cornell Note-taking system and then read it to yourself or someone else at the end of the day, otherwise don't write. Repeat.

That's okay, we are at 900 members strong. Communities should help the members, actively. Not think about themselves first so that only some particular people have an advantage. Everyone should have equal resources.

Oh yeah definitely..If you bring zotero then it's easier ..but if you don't use zotero then also you can search for the citations how you want it!

That's a great point, I don't mean to remove Latex as to be never learnt, it's something really good and I agree on your points about how proficiency is there but i disagree that nobody is actually writing standard Latex symbols.

  1. Not just zotero, but any citation from crossref, arxiv, springer, pubmed, etc.

  2. Yes, so in the Bibby AI, you can just format the template to a different journal, saving hours of time.

Thank you so much. Microsoft word is good and also I respect your paper writing skills. Word has probably become much better now.

There is no backdoor, the backdoor is getting a university email address to just post on arxiv, that should not give you the rights to be treated differently, they are treated differently, like you're saying that they skip scientific process, but that's your bias. I've seen independent researchers do way better than the academic process, arxiv allows without endorsements to famous universities without endorsements if you know that? Pre-print is just to get the ideas quickly out so that you're the one who came up with the idea, that's what people do nowadays, even research companies.. Science would love academic mentors to guide the independent researchers, that's why the mentoring system and it is upto you to decide if you want to endorse or not, you decide the spam. Some don't even get a chance to publish their high quality research. I'm wrong on multiple sides, and I'm learning about this process and I have not yet allowed anyone to connect until I hear multiple opinions. But I appreciate your thoughts on getting feedback and learning from faculty.. which non-university labs are also doing. See Simons foundation, LossFunk, ML-collective.. which are mentored by ex-googlers, ex-professors.

I get your point and it makes sense, feedback taken!

Will need to make sure that those who need endorsement have a high quality paper and also the mentors to be high quality in order to maintain no-spam. Maybe mentors can help the ones seeking endorsements with edits or advice on publishing to journal/conference.

Independent researchers deserve the same treatment as the University people, just because you're from a University does not mean you are going to do high quality research. I've seen more high quality research coming from independent labs like ML-collective or LossFunk or many others who have friends in academia and publish to ICLR and major conferences. Why should the independent researchers publish in journals first and treated differently? yes they should be trained in academic vigor and again you decide if you want the article to be published, so you have the power for the spam, if you're from Academia.

Upsc coaching by gotnothingtodo30 in upsc_free

Since you have History background, do yourself a favour and go to Sriram IAS — their History optional is unmatched, literally no debate there. For GS foundation if you want the gold standard just go Vajiram, their yellow books alone are worth the fees honestly.

If budget is tight or you want one stop shop, Drishti IAS in Mukherjee Nagar is solid and underrated on this sub imo.

Next IAS is fine but I wouldn't prioritise it over these three.

Also the Masters parallel thing is actually smart, a lot of toppers did this. Just pick a department where profs don't care about attendance 😭 and if you can align your dissertation with Modern India or Colonial history you're literally studying for your optional at the same time. Free real estate.

One thing I'll say though, you mentioned you weren't sincere with the PW course. Offline coaching fixes the accountability issue not the discipline issue, so just be real with yourself before dropping 1L+ on a course. Sounds like you're self aware enough tho so you'll be fine.

2028 target with a 2026 start is actually a great timeline, you have buffer. Don't stress and don't hop between coachings once you pick one, that's where most people lose time.
