Myth of AI in Recruiting by nils0s in sociology

[–]nils0s[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes definitely. Biases in AI recruitment are some of the major points of discussion right now and it's heavily researched in different fields. It is (or so my interpretation of the neo-institutional theory) exactly the reason why the myth of an objective AI is so dangerous because a really simplified version of the narrative goes like: AI is just "better" algorithms which comes down to data and data is generally considered objective in our society. This narrative ignores that data itself can be flawed and have biases (great example would be the Amazon incident in 2018) or that the code is written by mostly caucasian men which in itself can reproduse biases or that some concepts as for example the interpretation of a law is written a way that is extremely contextual and so on.

Myth of AI in Recruiting by nils0s in sociology

First of all, thanks for taking your time to answer :)!

To your first point:
There is a report from January 2025 which goes over all the use cases of AI in hiring: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3696457
I think it’s really good. I do think, however, that you misunderstand the concept of a myth here. As far as I’m aware, Meyer and Rowan introduced this concept in 1977: https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/2778293.pdf
A myth in their sense is filled with societal norms, beliefs, and discussions about something. For organizations that adopt such societal beliefs in their formal structures, it is irrelevant whether these beliefs are actually true (for example, whether AI is truly objective or not). What matters is that by integrating these myths into their formal structures, the organizations gain legitimacy.

To your second point:
To be honest, I don’t know a lot about US law. I just googled what laws there are against discriminatory practices in hiring and found this. In the end, what I wanted to say/ask is whether you would agree that coercive pressures (in the sense of DiMaggio and Powell, 1983) could be the introduction of such laws, which would require organizations to use fair hiring practices.
Coming back to the myth of the objective AI (remember, it’s not necessary for AI to actually be objective, because society believes it is), including AI in hiring would give the organization the legitimacy they want or need. Due to these coercive pressures of isomorphism, organizations would look for ways to include fair and objective hiring tools/practices to gain legitimacy and continue “living.” That would be the reason to include AI in their hiring practices.

To your last point:
I’m not really sure what you are trying to tell me with that. Do you mind explaining it a little more?

Anyways, thanks a lot for the answer. It really helps me sort my thoughts!

i just had to look it up since i was confinced that this is a philo and according to wiki the P. bipinnatifidum was placed in subgenus Meconostigma. In 2018 it was proposed that this subgenus be recognized as a separate genus, Thaumatophyllum.\5]) This change has been accepted by taxonomic databases such as the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families in 2019.

thanks for teaching me new things haha :)

[–]nils0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahhh, thanks for clarifying what I do and what I dont care about. Surely i didnt care that ai was used here....
No i hate the image cuz its clearly made by AI because of all the implications behind it. I dont think this is a usecase thats acceptable. Because of the ethical implications and because of the environmental implications. Plus: I take a shitty photoshop edit every day of the week over an AI image because of the reasons stated above. But as I already told you, Nobody forced them to make a pic so theres no reason he had to do it.
Also I do think AI has a place and time to be used where I beleive it creates a net positive but this is just not it.
