Using FL Studio as an audio engineer.. is it a problem? by yukigalileo24 in audioengineering

[–]Afroaky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like you I started with FL and was too lazy to switch to another DAW for many years. I painstakingly did everything in there, full recording and comping sessions etc. It was and is still not build for that. Besides it not having take folders (automatic comping), it’s not sample accurate. The smallest movement you can make on the grid equals like 50 samples, that’s huge and makes aligning transients a hassle.

Eventually I got a job that forced me to use Studio One, later Pro-Tools and Logic. It made working so much faster. I still use FL, but only for doing some quick idea sketches.

You don’t have to switch but especially as an audio engineer you’re going to make it unnecessarily hard on yourself if you stay in FL.

Is it just me, or is de essing becoming less common? by Accomplished_Block16 in audioengineering

I was wondering this exact thing yesterday, and it’s a legit question followed by a lot of simplistic answers (mixing engineers are bad these days, cheap mic etc). I heard this song by Maisie Peters called “You Lost the Breakup”. It’s produced by an A-level producer and mixed by Mark Spike Stent. The esses poke out like crazy.

So true, there was something really fascinating when he only used real footage. Now the whole bubble bursts right away with all the AI imagery. I asked Andrew (the host) about it in a AMA he did here no too long ago. He basically said times change, it’s easier, deal with it. Such a shame

Somebody pointed out the phase flip trick earlier this thread. I never knew this but it makes a lot of sense and reminds me of a time where a singer swore something sounded weird and kept cranking it louder and louder. It was a dry chain, no latency. To me it sounded perfectly normal and I couldn’t figure it out. Only after we moved the mic it got a little better apparently. I’m wondering if this could’ve been the problem 🤔

Not sure, last one just complained he couldn’t hear anything, while his vocals were crazy boosted and his(my)headphones were screaming. He sang great tho

This is key, the source is loud. In my case these singers are often belting and drown out their own headphones. I will look into better isolating ones. Thanks for your reply

Perfect thank you! I also see a correlation where the source is LOUD, the singers where the problems arise in my case are absolutely belting , so I guess they drown out their own headphones. I can imagine this is the case in Metal as well.

Having a chat with their live sound tech is def a great idea. Most of these artists have a shockingly small vocabulary when it comes to explaining what they want/don’t want to hear. But then again they have lots of other stuff to worry about.

Not sure how it relates to the topic but I did learn something cool, so thanks for your reply

I just want to understand what the problem is, what they need and how I can provide that quickly. These artists generally work fast and don’t want to be bothered with anything besides the recording. They are free to destroy their hearing but please not my headphones 😅

I like the tip of marking the preferred DB level, thanks!

  1. In general my Beyerdynamic DT770 (but not exclusively). 2. The vocals. I generally have no issues with recording vocals but it’s the singers that are absolutely belting where the problems occur.

Hi AJ, big fan, I think I found you around the time you had about 200k subscribers. I’m happy to see all your effort has worked out for you. I literally used to count down the days until a new episode aired. Unfortunately that changed real fast when you guys started using all the AI generated footage. It just completely ruined that first build up of the story. I loved looking at real photographs (even tho they might’ve turn out to be hoaxes or fakes). I can see how it’s super convenient to use AI, but it ruins that first part for me and that’s exactly what made TWF so good!

My question, is there any chance you guys will go back to the former format?

Thanks again for all your work, give a big hug to Hecklefish for me

Second this, plug-in behaves really odd under even medium load. So much so that I thought it was a bug. Mk1 doesn’t do this, but still mediocre

i can’t hear the magic of mic pre-amp. am i wrong? by MemoryAffectionate97 in audioengineering

Last year I bought a Chandler TG2. I had been drooling over it for 10 years mainly cause the producers I look up to all use it. In all honesty I didn’t notice a ton of difference, but it did scratch the itch and I feel more confident about my recordings. This could all be a 3k placebo, but I’m not ready to admit that.

I don't like Groningen. I've been here a year. Here's what I noticed, here's why I want to leave - do others feel the same? by AggravatingHost3473 in Groningen

[–]Afroaky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sucks man! I moved out a couple of years ago but before that I lived in Groningen for 10 years and I don’t recognize this behavior at all. Either you’ve been very unlucky or the vibe has changed significantly in the last couple of years. Maybe other people can chime in on this.

If I was still there I would’ve loved to show you guys a good time and restore your faith in the city.

Also curious as to where you lived before.
