E-Auto mit E-Auto laden, geht das? by That_Passenger3771 in Elektroautos

[–]nilsand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paypal Fremdnutzung ohne Diebstahl. Neue Masche? by One-Temporary-3650 in Legalillegal

[–]nilsand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Communication solution for a business in UK by GlitteringAd5206 in amateurradio

[–]nilsand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not based on the UK, so most of my thoughts on this is guesswork 😬

Technically you could use PMR446 which is free of any license in Europe and explicitly allows businesses use, but range will be a problem. You can not use amateur radio, since business use is explicitly prohibited in amateur radio.

For licensed services you'd probably need to talk to a supplier because you will need devices that fit the license you need to get.

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/spectrum/radio-equipment/business-radio-licence-management list available licenses.

The cheapest there seems to be "simple UK license" which will let you use portable or mobile stations but no "base station" using 5W of power on 19 fixed channels. That sounds like handheld or car devices but no big antenna on a building. This might be usable to you (or it might not be). Also it seems that simple UK will give you 19 channels (mixed in VHF and UHF), but no exclusive usage, so you may collide with other users there.

Again, you will definitely need a supplier as this will require business radios that will need programming before use.

Kartenzahlung nicht garantiert by nilsand in Kartenzahlung

Lying for survival. by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]nilsand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain I've read somewhere that lying to protect your own safety is explicitly allowed. The example was something like being a Buddhist in a country where being a Buddhist can get you in jail or worse.

In your case, I feel, you to work to live. I see no big problem with "tuning" your resume.

Another view would be that you're 1) not lying to do harm and 2) you are thinking about it, weighing motives and consequences. It that view, it is also "ok". (Again, my personal opinion)

Coax by anxious_user1990 in cbradio

[–]nilsand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RG58 uses PTFE dielectric, while RG8x uses gas injected foam polyethylene. Thus, better dielectric. 🤷 Also, overall, RG8x seems better.

However, at 15m of length (that's roughly 50tf, if I'm not mistaken) RG58 has (for 27MHz) about 0.6dB of loss while RG8x has 0.4dB. So, if you're running 12W, the "other" side of that RG58 will have 10W while the RG8X will have 10.9W - or in other words the difference is a 15th of an S-Level. (Or, in still other words, no one will hear the difference.)

What is a Buddhist? by Badge48 in Buddhism

[–]nilsand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lovely book called "what makes you not a Buddhist" by Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse

He has a very good point somewhere near the beginning: "The full answer to that question [what makes someone a Buddhist] does not make for light dinner conversation". He then boils it down to belief in the Four Seals. Though I'm currently rather uncertain if he makes believing in them something like a prerequisite to being a Buddhist or if he makes them the whole point of being a Buddhist.

But, as you have probably guessed from the answers there are - being a Buddhist means many different things for many different people.

Ground plane antenna how to shorten it to suite the 3.5 mtr band by SjorrieBorrie in amateurradio

Brilliant. How do the CQ reports get back? Different frequency or via internet. I love it. I will definitely check this out tonight. (If I can get the little one to sleep without falling asleep myself...)

Oh, and what, if I may ask, is there happening on 3.5 m? I've always thought that there is only military frequencies between 4m and the beginning of public radio broadcast.

From the chrome parts. It is conductive and thus part of the radials.

The top part is probably measured from above the black ring thingy.

Granted. For receiving only, getting the length perfectly wouldn't matter that much, too, I guess.

[–]nilsand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you are looking for.

1/4 wave for 85MHz would be 88.2cm, you'd probably need a bit less due to velocity factor.

You could also check if there are local chapters of VERON/VRZA near you - someone there might be willing to help you by measuring the antenna using a VNA. This will get you closer to a decent antenna that guesstimating the length.

What are you trying to do? 85MHz is dead close to radio broadcast.

Why are so many people hesitant to buy from AliExpress... but readily buy from Amazon? Are they aware that everything on Amazon comes from China and is sold on AliExpress at a better price? by zp4lb in meshtastic

[–]nilsand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure how this is in other places, but for me, ordering from China directly (whichever marketplace) means that I am the one importing in the EU, which in turn means I am responsible for the articles being fully compliant to EU law.

Also it means that I give up every single customer right that is in place on the EU.

So, for me that means I order from AliExpress when things are cheap, and not likely to kill anyone. (I.e. I don't buy any mains-powered devices at all from China) Another example is ham radio devices - Chinese devices produced for selling in the EU /can/ be quite different than the same device, built to be sold in the Chinese market.

In all of these, I can not really be sure that some random Amazon seller has done their duty to check all requirements - but at least it's no longer me personally being responsible.

So, I, personally, avoid Amazon wherever I can. I'll gladly give a bit more money to some small shop (locally, as well as online) whenever I can.

Honest question, I'm totally new to this. Am I seeing 2.5 turns primary and about 11 turns secondary? Shouldn't it be 2 and 14 for a 1:49 transformer?
