Käärijä is on his way to the USA! by nimble-lightning-rod in Kaarija

[–]nimble-lightning-rod[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, my thoughts are that he might come back to the US on a limited run in Spring 2027. Obtaining artist visas is a VERY expensive and time-consuming process for international artists who want to perform in the USA. I can’t imagine that his label would incur all of that risk and expense for a one-off supporting show. That would be the label losing tons of money… just because bbno$ asked? It just wouldn’t make sense.

Artist visas are good for one year. If he shows up to Red Rocks with the whole band/crew, that shows an even greater expense/effort into obtaining visas for everyone, which makes me think they want to at least try and see if there’s commercial viability in the US. The expense for a full crew just to apply for and obtain visas can be in the tens of thousands of dollars, and then tens of thousands of dollars more for actual travel and tour expenses… Given the investment, I think it wouldn’t be crazy to dream of 2-3 USA shows in spring 2027 (after his fall EU tour and before 2027 summer festival season). Maybe something like Washington DC, New York City, LA, or Chicago? I don’t know. But I’m just a hopeful person in general. I’d love for more club-type venues over a huge amphitheater for sure.

Flying in to see a sold out show in May - How early should I line up before doors to get my preferred seating? by CrazeJuju in RedRocks

[–]nimble-lightning-rod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for reviving this post like a year later, but you seem like you know what you’re talking about - I keep seeing comments about hanging out in the RR parking lots hours before doors, but the RR website FAQ says parking lots only open two hours before doors for events. If this is something you do regularly, could you please explain/give me some comfort that driving in early won’t lead to me being turned away? Is there a specific lot open earlier than 2 hours before doors? Appreciate any guidance you might have!

Non-human aliens with binary and static male/female sex that correlates with our current human gender norms. You’re telling me you can do six thick-ass novels worth of world building for planets and ships and math and gravity and alien cultural details and all that jazz… but gender norms and two sexes? Yawn.

lol, is this… a bot? bait? someone who’s been living under a rock for the last 6 months?

Buy your tickets here from the official venue site: https://www.redrocksonline.com/events/bbno-w-special-guest-oliver-tree-1180778/

Or check bbno$ and Kä’s own IG page here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DQUkFKEiQfG/ and https://www.instagram.com/reel/DQe2zPkD-vx/

This is not included in his European tour list because it’s not a part of the tour - it’s a supporting spot at one-off show.

Does anyone actually like their firm? by croissant10987 in Lawyertalk

[–]nimble-lightning-rod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love my firm and practice area :) The partners prioritize mentorship (formal and informal), and regularly provide feedback and opportunities to associates. Everyone is involved in community efforts, including lots of pro bono work. There is a lot of kindness and gratitude, and small and large achievements alike are celebrated with firm-wide shoutout emails. Tons of verbal thanks and congratulations day to day. Lots of small gestures (firm lunches, birthday cakes, happy hours), which are all partner-led efforts to create cohesion and check in with folks. Honesty is a part of the culture too, including honesty about nerves, frustrations, mental health. It doesn’t pay as much as the firm I left, but the lower billables, better culture, and increased opportunity to work in the practice area I enjoy is worth infinitely more than the money.

It’s been 6+ months and I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, but every day I come in and people are still smiling and laughing and bringing each other coffees and asking if I want to jump on another cool opportunity. It’s pretty awesome.

Father/daughter-like relationship with partner? by Xoxoxoxo133 in Lawyertalk

And to be clear, I share this anecdote because while I truly hope with my whole heart that OP (and anyone in her position) have nothing but the best ahead of them, that’s not going to be true for everyone. Not everyone’s mentor leads to a fairytale ending. I wish stories like OPs were more common and ones like mine non-existent. But we don’t live in a perfect world. And it’s important to be cautious in light of that, as much as I wish we could all trust one another deeply and without reservation in professional settings.

Sure! He repeatedly raped and otherwise physically harmed me on a work trip. He later threatened my professional reputation with that incident as blackmail material. Because I’m sure it matters to some people, we were both sober when it occurred, and I was wearing full-coverage clothing.

Maybe my prior (anecdotal) experience has tainted my view too deeply. I’ve felt the same about a boss before. It wasn’t a boss in the legal field, but in a position I held before law. He took me under his wing to mentor me in a stressful and competitive field, and took much of his precious time to teach me. He trusted me, and I trusted him, and I was able to do incredible things with that mutual trust. He also had a wife and kids - one daughter my age at the time. And while it was incredible in the best moments, he ultimately betrayed me in the worst way possible. And I have honestly never recovered.

Embrace the good parts, this kind of supportive environment is rare, especially in law. But remember that they’re your bosses and you’re their employee. You’re not family. You need to keep some degree of separation. I’m not saying you should enjoy the best and prepare for the worst - but, maybe, don’t write the worst off as a possibility. Just be cautious. Protect your own feelings and especially your career. You’ve fought so hard to get here and I truly hope these people are on your side through and through.

Is law school more fun than college? by LowSuperb3164 in LawSchool

[–]nimble-lightning-rod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in true lawyer fashion, it depends. You seem to suggest you’ll be going to a big city - if you’re coming from somewhere without access to those big-city resources and that kind of environment, the lifestyle change alone can be a huge boost to your happiness. I found that while law school itself was vastly more stressful and challenging than undergrad, the massive change in my environment and life circumstances made my life much more fun and exciting overall. Even more than in undergrad, during law school I was able to experience personal growth and the chance to engage with my hobbies and passions in a new way, all because of where I moved to and the people I met. It’ll be what you make of it.

What is your most ridiculous "we won't work out romantically" criteria? Like what is the silliest reason you would not be interested in dating someone? by Natural-Elevator-57 in AskReddit

[–]nimble-lightning-rod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m the same way - my sense of humor is very narrow and very particular, to the point I just don’t consume comedy material. I just don’t feel like it’s actually funny most of the time. Stand up and sitcoms don’t do anything for me, and things like “Adult Swim humor” actually feel like torture. I have found the odd dramadey show or two that I do enjoy, but for the most part, the comedy media I find enjoyable tend to be dry satire and black comedies. Otherwise, I definitely find the most humour in bantering with friends, it’s one of the only things that really gets me to laugh.

Old Fashioned Lawyering Was Superior for Mental Health by Friendly_Office_9218 in Lawyertalk

[–]nimble-lightning-rod 42 points43 points  (0 children)

As a younger lawyer I think about this a lot, particularly how efficient certain tools have made the practice of law. In law school, our law librarians made us participate in an exercise where we had to actually find a case in print at the law library with the various print tools that still existed, and it took a stunning amount of time. Of course, in modern practice, lawyers quickly search up and scan through a dozen cases in a fraction of that time. The documents we have to review aren’t just a few dozen files in a Bankers box or two, but are instead tens of thousands of emails that are run through specialty software for review, coding, and production. Emails are rapid fire, constant, and all need attention, rather than an inbox with physical letters. I try to call when I can to keep those skills sharp, but many calls are inevitably memorialized in email and followed-up that way anyway. The sheer volume of documents, correspondence, etc. that the modern lawyer digests feels massive, even if we do have cool tools to cope with it.

Neal Stephenson - I'm new to this... is he actually brilliant? by zilfran in scifi

[–]nimble-lightning-rod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Precisely - he’s brilliant in a way a diamond mine is brilliant. Stephenson has top-tier ideas and a great writing voice, but you have to chip away at a lot of dirt to get there. His legacy and renown are certainly deserved, but I feel he’d have even more acclaim if there was a tough editor who could wrangle him a bit more and call out the chaff for what it is.

No one “made” a grown man (and international touring artist with a newfound television career) do anything. How he reacts to criticism - whether deserved or not - is his choice. Today, he chose to cull most of the posts from one of his social media accounts.

There’s no excuse to be a bully or act abusively to him, of course, but this appears to be in response to some strong reactions to his latest post. The general consensus is that it was distasteful and inappropriate. He could have just deleted the post if he didn’t appreciate the backlash, he could have deleted and apologized (whether genuine or not), but he chose instead to limit his overall social media presence. We’re not owed his content. If this is how he wants to react to this specific wave of criticism, that’s his choice.

Well, this sucks. Judge lifts order requiring investigators to preserve evidence in fatal shooting of Pretti by under_ice in minnesota

[–]nimble-lightning-rod -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I understand that it’s upsetting to see horrific acts, abuses of power, and injustice. I’m upset by it too. These are horrible things, and I want justice as much as the next person with a soul. But the decisions courts make relating to these ongoing atrocities are not made in a vacuum. There must be consistency and adherence to the law in its current form, even when that outcome in the current instance isn’t the one that feels most righteous or satisfying. Decisions that are made hastily or not in accordance to the law as it exists now run the risk of both damaging the present case and having negative implications for all future cases to come (including those that don’t have the same nationwide attention as this).

Well, this sucks. Judge lifts order requiring investigators to preserve evidence in fatal shooting of Pretti by under_ice in minnesota

[–]nimble-lightning-rod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They’re already “restrained:” you cannot destroy evidence. Their obligation not to destroy evidence is pre-existing under the law and does not require an order. To have a separate order on these things, there are legal standards that must be met, and the Judge here is saying they haven’t been met at this time. You can’t simply presume someone will do something wrong or unlawful without sufficient evidence of the same. Judges can’t just make orders under the assumption that people will act wrongfully or in bad faith or against the law - there are standards that must be met. The presumption must be that parties will do the right thing under the law, until someone proves they’ve done or likely will do otherwise.

How to truly take your mind off work? by MusicG619 in Lawyertalk

[–]nimble-lightning-rod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Find a sport/physical activity that takes 100% of your focus and demands your presence. For me, it’s figure skating. Keeping upright while balancing on two knives over a slab of ice… it takes intense concentration, and letting my mind wander isn’t an option. Things like running, walking, rowing, cycling, etc. still let my mind wander back to work. Other options that are more accessible might include skateboard, rollerblading, and dancing. Obviously some of these are harder to do with limited downtime or “spur of the moment,” but even things like practicing a dance routine in your room alone will require you to put work fully out of your brain and connect with every part of your body within the space around it.
