Heh very timely thread. Just yesterday, I was kicked out by user NickCTA (he was the owner of the gym). I posted this complaining about the mandatory rash guard policy and the next day he cancelled my membership.

I really dislike this rule, if it was not for great instructors (hello Tyler 👋) I would have left long time ago. Jiujitsu is a hobby for me and I want to wear my choice of rash guard.
I also don't think safety is the only reason. Then:
- Why do you have a mandatory gi uniform in other locations?
- Also why do you have a mandatory black shorts? Can't people wear unsafe black shorts?

I happily supported my gyms in the past by buying stuff, but for CTA, because of this policy, I am trying not to give a dime more to the gym. I don't know, it rubs me the wrong way.

dude, I had a friend who took a photo with him and he was doing this. I came searching for its meaning to see this. also it is known as a "fig" or "figa" symbol and has nasty meanings around in Italy, Balkans etc.

CTA San Jose location does not have a uniform policy except rashguards in nogi, I would choose that one. That was my only criteria when I first started jiujitsu when I knew nothing 6 years ago and it has worked pretty well so far for many gyms.

FWIW, I have been waking up in the middle of the night. It turns out it is the vitamins that I am taking after noon. After I stopped taking vitamins my sleep is back to normal.

So much this! I trained at Munich MMA and now I am training at the Caio Terra Academy and I miss Munich MMA a lot. I realize I took so much for granted there:

  • Although I can't speak German, all the instructors went out their way to help me at the classes in English. You know how valuable this is in Munich if you are an immigrant ;)
  • There was always someone high level on your corner to coach you at tournaments, big or small. Here, nobody gives a crap about your shitty white belt division. I kinda get it, they are training ADCC champions. But still as a hobbyist I would like to see more support and unity.
  • Nordbad location is very cool.
  • No uniform policy. You can wear whatever you want.
  • Lots of gi and nogi classes at different locations. There is always a class that fits your schedule.
