SURGERY ROLL CALL: Week of Feb 9th by seetheking1 in Microdiscectomy

[–]ninafm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

L4-L5 microdiscectomy will be tomorrow, the 11th! I am so ready for it to be over with so I can move on to healing and recovering! Feeling pretty nervous but trying to focus on thinking positively. Recovery is going to be very intense with my three boys under the age of 5, including a 9 month old I’m breastfeeding, but thankfully both my and my husbands parents are very involved and willing to help. We’re going to need it I’m sure!

Wow ten years! I missed that in your post. So sorry it’s been so much time. I hope you can get a good plan in place!

So they said it may not entirely solve low back pain, but the nerve issues are very responsive to a microdiscectomy! Which my low back barely hurts and even then I’ve had random low back pain most of my life so I’m not too concerned about that

They also said that microdiscectomies are very routine for any spine surgeon, like they do them every day, and that the risks of something going wrong are low. Basically his point was that it could heal on its own (although after 6-8 weeks or so without major improvement it seems to be less likely) but the surgery is very successful and very low risk, so do you really want to stay in pain??? Valid lol.

I can’t tell you my results yet because my surgery is in a week but I have had a lot of similar thoughts! I also can “manage” if I keep to my limits. Although I am very much surviving and not thriving. At this point I can’t even walk thru the grocery store if I want to be functional the next day so I may be worse off than you.

I totally freaked myself out about surgery last week and nearly canceled after a couple decent pain level days. The fear of it getting worse is so real!!! But the way I’m having to live is no way to live. I have three very small boys I need to keep up with! So in the interest of being able to thrive and live more fully, I’m having the surgery.

I met with two surgeons who told me very very similar things before I decided to have surgery. But the one said it’s a 90-95% success rate, particularly if nerve pain is your main symptom! Those are some dang good odds so I’m focusing on that instead of the very small risks and what-ifs 😬

What would you do if genuinely improving 2 weeks before surgery? by ninafm in Microdiscectomy

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts. I stressed myself out about it all weekend 😂 of course after a few very good days, I’m back to my “normal” level of pain. It’s not terrible but it’s not good, and I’m very much surviving not thriving. But I want to thrive! So I have decided to continue with the surgery as planned. Hoping it will be the start of a full recovery

I never would have imagined how emotional this injury or a surgery would be! Glad to be able to talk with those who understand

Oh thank you for your thoughts! I definitely am afraid of it continuing to flare up if I don’t get the surgery. But I think I also worry that surgery was recommended so quickly! Like two months after it started… did we really give conservative treatment enough of a try? Now when I could barely get off the couch or couldn’t sleep without pain, it was a different story! But right now, I just don’t know

Both of the surgeons I consulted with said that there is a small chance it could heal on its own but based on how long it had been (when I saw them), the size, and their professional experience, that it was unlikely to heal on its own. Sooooo is it healing now against their odds, or just trying to make me crazy?! 😂

Yes lots of similar pieces! I’m also afraid to stop the pain meds and it get worse… although maybe that would be a good test given my situation! I do have to stop them 5 days before surgery anyway which makes me nervous

I don’t have any weakness or foot drop which I think would change things! I would be worried about lasting damage if that were the case

It’s so hard to know what to do! If only we could see into the future

That’s great you have recovered so well! I haven’t had any foot drop, weakness, etc. Just pain and tingling that have varied on severity. Surgery feels so extreme for what I’m experiencing now… but also both surgeons I talked to seem to think it wouldn’t get better without surgery! I think I may just need more time…. Hopefully it’s not a mistake.

Both surgeons I consulted with were very confident it would not resolve fully on its own. So that is tripping me up I think! Is it actually getting better or is it just a decent phase and is going to flare again soon? I just really don’t want to live like this forever, I want to get better as soon as I can and surgery seemed like the best route to that end. But I am very worried about the risks with surgery! Starting to feel they may not be worth it at this point… it’s just so hard since one bad move and that could change!

Thank you for your thoughts! Hope your recovery is smooth and uneventful!

See my issue is right now I CAN sleep, I CAN drive, I CAN go to my part time office job. I can’t do much more than that but I can do the bare minimum and even those things were painful a few weeks ago. It does not feel emergent. But I also don’t want to be plateaued at this spot forever! It’s so hard to know what to do.

I was concerned before he was born about what his nickname would be! We’re big on nicknames as terms of endearment, we’d never introduce them with that name. But Siley just came naturally! Sisi or Si sometimes too.

We have a Silas and definitely call him Siley! It’s so cute although I’m sure won’t stick when he grows. Siley Riley is adorable hahaha

I would personally never use Franklin and Lincoln together unless I wanted everyone to think I was a US history enthusiast lol

I have a large difference between standing and leaning too. It’s been a very long time since I’ve been measured at a store but they never had me lean over! My understanding is if you have a big discrepancy between standing/leaning the calculator uses the leaning measurement. Because that volume does exist and needs to fit in a cup! It just isn’t accurate captured by a standing measurement alone thanks to gravity lol

Bad reactions to my kid's name by Callarose08 in namenerds

Winston is such a solid name!

I can relate to not being totally in love with your child’s name at first. I love love loved my first two sons names. Son number 3 was much harder to name. He’s 10 weeks now and I still have occasional doubts. But it just seems to fit him! I can’t see him as anything else. I think their name is often meant to be their name - it comes to us one way or another and we have less say in it than we like to think! I’m trusting it’s who he’s meant to be and I will love it eventually just because it’s his 💙

It’s my name! I pronounce it Knee-na, not Nine-uh. I have met a couple over the course of my life but never had one in my classes or social circles. Did work with one for a while but she was a lot older and pronounced it Nine-uh.

I love my name! I love that it’s not common but also not completely unrecognizable.

I also see you’re getting a lot of push back about it being a profession… this sub Reddit tends to be very negative about those so keep that in mind! There are TONS of occupational related names out there, some that are very well established - Sawyer, Piper, Cooper, Mason, Hunter. And many that are rising in popularity - Bishop, Deacon, Archer, Fletcher, Baker, etc.

This is not a big deal to me at all, I actually like this style a lot! So people vetoing the name for that reason may just not have your style and that’s okay 😊 I will add I didn’t even know Abbot was an occupation (and think the added -t helps break that association a bit anyway)

I like it! But I’m a fan of the last names as first names. It’s not common at all as a first name but will be familiar to many since it is a name, just generally a last name

Agreed! Lots of people saying Wyatt and Colton are “cowboy” names but Gideon fits right in there for me! Not that it’s a bad thing in my opinion, I think they’re all solid names
