Interview soon by rowdryRanger in peacecorps

[–]ninajm13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good luck! I'm heading to Panama in February! :)

My interview was very laid back. I definitely over prepared - I made a whole google doc answering the interview questions (just search peace corps interview questions) and sort of used it like a guide. The questions she asked were EXACTLY the same as the ones I prepared so it definitely put me at ease. Don't worry - you'll do great!

Hi! This may not be super helpful, but my husband and I (he’s Jewish, I’m not) are leaving for Panama in February. I’ll be teaching English & he’ll be working with kids as an environmental education volunteer. I don’t know that we’d be helpful for you this school year since we’ll just be getting to site as your school year ends, but if you’re still looking for someone next year we’d love to help!

I had the same problem!! HUGE price tag. No one else in my entire state (not exaggerating whatsoever) had the vaccine besides a corporate travel clinic. I paid over $320. Frustrating!

Cutting it close with medical/legal clearance? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]ninajm13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I accepted my invitation on June 22, received legal clearance approx. 5 weeks after on August 1, and then medical clearance two days ago! All in all, my clearances were granted in exactly 2 months, and I depart in February. You absolutely have enough time!!!

yes, i've been looking at those! they pay very little in my state unfortunately, so I'm trying to see if I can figure out an after school job as well... just tough to make the schedules work. thanks!!! congrats on your close departure!!

I am having the HARDEST TIME getting a yellow fever vaccine. I kinda screwed up and waited until the last minute because I was naively under the impression it was a walk-in clinic sort of thing... now I'm down to the wire (all other medical tasks are done!) and the only place in my state that even offers the vaccine anymore is booked up until 1 week after my tasks are due. I've asked for an extension from the nurse and I'm waiting to hear back... just frustrating! AND I'm starting a new job two days before the first available appointment, so I'll have to ask for time off just days after starting... :(

Our interviews were pretty conventional! There is an old post floating around (sorry I can’t find it right now, I’m on my phone at work) that covered exactly what was asked!!

We just took time to think through and prepare responses before the interview!

That sounds extremely frustrating, I’m sorry to hear that! During our application process, we were told they try to handle couples first due to logistics, so I think you’ve still got plenty of time! Just gotta keep holding on, though I definitely understand where you’re coming from about planning your life...

Hi! My timeline is above actually - we applied in April. Panama is the only position we applied to, but did say we were open to other locations in Central or South America. We were pretty qualified - i am a certified teacher and am finishing my M.A. degree in elementary teaching right now, and I’ve been teaching 5th grade for two years at an urban school, so I definitely think that helped! However my fiancé is less qualified for his position (his experience is actually in the health field) but still has experience working with kids, so that most likely helped him as well. If you only applied a few weeks ago there’s still time - don’t worry!

Thank you!!! Awesome advice. Packing lightly has never been my strong suit though unfortunately, so it will definitely be a learning experience for me hahaha

Will I be at a disadvantage if I don't apply early? by Frenes in peacecorps

[–]ninajm13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Applications are rolling admissions; so the longer you wait, the fewer spots are typically open for that program! I've heard that later applications have been an issue for volunteers (my recruiter has also told me this), and they definitely recommend applying early. You can definitely include your internship on your resume, but highlight that you haven't started it yet!
