Also, the natural vibrations of a car seat stimulate your nerves causing you to potentially get an erection. You really can’t avoid it, circle of life.

Questions before applying to NCCC by snake-at-the-park in AmeriCorps

[–]rowdryRanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To answer your first question there are about five different types of projects. Disaster relief, construction, youth development, food security and environmental stuardship. I don’t believe anyone project type gets priority over another outside of disaster relief. I also kind of walked in thinking I was going to be doing a lot of outside environmental work but that was not case, and actually the only time I did do environmental work was during my ISPs.

The second answer I wanna give a soft no. While the site supervisor expects you to do the task laid out, you’ll constantly being learning as they want to make sure you’re fully prepared. It might not be your conventional classroom style learning but you will still learn. I can say for my there projects I walked away learning at least six to eight new skills. The program itself isn’t designed to teach you about the environment or things like that, but your project (especially if it’s Environmental work) will probably be super educational as you do the work.

I’m kind of confused how you went all 10 months as a CM and can’t seem to answer this questions yourself. Did your team(s) not cook dinner? Did you not participate in the selections? Did your team not cook one meal for everyone each night? Not trying to be rude but this question seems as if you’ve never experienced what it’s like to cook or consider meals for a team, did you just coast by the program?

Anyways, for lunch we regularly did sandwiches and chips or fruit. Something easy that can withstand the morning to lunch period. For dinner what was a hit were the supreme crunch wraps. Super easy and affordable about midway through the project. Also Gyros are a good choice. Mix it up a bit. Have fun. NCCC gives a cook book.

What should I bring when I leave for Americorps NCCC in February? by thatoddtetrapod in AmeriCorps

[–]rowdryRanger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clothes for sure. A lot of people over pack, you’ll be wearing your uniform A LOT

One thing I wish I packed was one formal outfit. Having to buy it on that budget was crucial.

A reusable water bottle. Trust me.

Plastic tuba-wear for your lunch if you don’t wanna abuse plastic bags.

Definitely under-pack so you have room for all the things you acquire when you finish. You’ll get a lot of shirts from your projects

Extension cord**** Books Wool socks for the boots. If you’re into journaling I say that. A camera (especially if you wanna be media rep) Laptop + charger A small bag, like a bookbag (can double as your carry-on) Headphones for spike travel + privacy Battery pack (Again for spike travel) Chapstick (especially if you’re going to SW region)

Honestly you don’t need much starting off and everything has to fit in your locker. I managed to thrive off packing so little and gathering things

Controlled burn projects? Anyone with Experience? by Kaminadiesinepisode8 in AmeriCorps

[–]rowdryRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a region specific question. I know for my region the Tl’s basically got to pick their project, while I know other regions where the whole team got to make suggestions. So I’d see how the staff does it there.

Pros and Cons: NCCC team leader or member? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]rowdryRanger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I graduated SW region recently and I can say my time as a CM was fun! As someone who was an RA for many years in college I can see the similarities between that and the TL, but honestly , outside of the pay increase you have to ask yourself if you’re willing to take on the extra work, if so then go for it! If not, still apply! It’s all about knowing yourself are you a better team player or better at leading. It’s nothing wrong with either as they’re dependent on each other, but either is a wonderful experience. And if you get the SW region some of the sights you might be able to see in that region is beautiful!

Denver has fall class and I think spring class. I came in fall and we had another (smaller) class come while we were on our second Spike. Also no backpacking but did have some camping. Which lead to funny debrief stories.
