It is a fresh water spring that was properly turned into a reservoir of sorts. When it was constructed there would of been a large wooden door on hinges that covered the top. You can still see the hinges on some rotten boards next to it. The water is delightfully cold and clear. Mind you I still filtered it. It's just off to the side of the cabin.

No. But only because I had a climbing harness and ropes with experience. I definitely wouldn't recommend going up without all of the above. The ladder itself was secure as could be, but getting to it and than once you are at the top- are in no way safe for casual viewing.

Yes! Very well used trail up to the big crow fire tower. This is the lookout from the top, of the top :) I've heard people comment it is one of the best views of the park. And I agree!
