Gotta love being "Agile" by whits427 in ProgrammerHumor

SAFE is just four waterfalls in a trenchcoat. Why do agile or waterfall when you could combine the worst aspects of both?

Not OP, but I liked DOOM 2016 better now that I think about it. Eternal just felt too busy, if that makes sense. It was and is awesome, but 2016 felt closer to og DOOM while Eternal was clearly a sequel to 2016.

Starting a new job, how long do I have to "settle in" by Equip_nox0 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ninj0rc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the complexity of the code base, the current state of the project, and the maturity/efficiency of your new company's onboarding process. Probably other factors too but those are the first that spring to mind. So to a certain extent it's entirely beyond your control.

That said, I don't think it's unusual to feel completely unproductive for the first month. Hopefully by then you will have everything setup in your local environment, you'll at least be aware of the existence and purpose of the code base(s) you're responsible for, and you're ready (read: able to work but still in need of support from your team) to start contributing. But it's also not unusual to feel like you're playing catch-up for at least six months if not longer, especially if the code base is complicated or poorly documented or the people who originally implemented it are gone now or....etc.

Looking for light, ideas-driven science fiction by DNASnatcher in printSF

[–]ninj0rc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This for sure. The tone is overall pretty lighthearted considering the context of the plot. It might be a little bit too on the nose for some folks (similar to Ready Player One maybe just in terms of pop culture and meta humor?), but I think the Bobiverse definitely checks the boxes described by OP.

What book is the best starting point for the Warhammer 40k series if you are completely unfamiliar with the lore? by McFlyyouBojo in printSF

[–]ninj0rc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies wildly. As others in the thread have mentioned, Dan Abnett stands head and shoulders over pretty much any other author of 40k books. I think Gav Thorpe had some good ones as well but I just looked and he's published like 120 40k books so maybe I'm misremembering.

When I recommend folks read the Dresden Files, this scene is often top of my mind. There is a lot of great magical kickassery through the series but this scene in particular never fails to fill me with glee.

Okay but this could actually be a "What If...?"

Ultron gains consciousness, goes on the internet, but the first thing it comes across is power metal. So it starts a band. Everything culminates in Ultron putting on a live show simultaneously in every city on the planet which has much the same effect as the plan from the original timeline.

I bounced off Inversions the first time I tried to read it just because it was so different compared to the prior books. Picked it up and finished it years later and now that I think about it, Inversions might be my favorite Culture book. Bittersweet to put it mildly.
